PF Caleb Wilson's official visit is this weekend

The goat Joe Adams says Kentucky has a chance

Dybsanta is probably the best, I really don't care. But watch some tape on Wilson and you'll see he is a great player too. This kid can do it all, and is already a defensive stud. We seem to have some really good pf options.
Its feels like that 2013 class where three or four guys had a legit claim to #1: Randle, Wiggins, Parker, Embiid.

Right now the bro love between Lewis and Wilson is causing me to daydream about the daffy avatar, lol. This week comes the counterpunches from the other coaches on the Wilson list. Hopefully when pope reconnects this week we can stay on some more momentum with UK.

@bucsrule8872 , thoughts?

Would you be happy with a three-man class of Johnson, Wilson, and Moreno? Then add three or four from the portal, and bring back the presumed returning five?

C - Garrison - Moreno - Portal #1
F - Wilson - Portal #1
F - Oweh - Chandler - Noah
G - Johnson - Perry/ Portal #3 (whoever outperforms)
G - Portal #2 - Portal #3

That would be 11 guys.
Absolutely!

That’s a perfect scenario, IMHO.

Wilson will be a star in college. I would also be happy with Cenac.

And as I have stated many times, I want a veteran PG to lead the way.

I would also like to see them sign another couple of multi year guys in this ‘25 class. It’s a deep class. Hopefully Coach signs all his scholarship or at least most of them. That was one of my main problems with Cal, he never used all his allotted scholarships.

It seems to be a pretty small group of guys we are recruiting at this point. Hopefully that’s a sign of feeling really good about our chances with those guys. Brown, Lewis, Mullins, Ament, Bundalow, Cenac and Wilson. Anyone else?

Four incoming McDonald's All-Americans would be a helluva haul to add in Pope's first official class.

I hope it comes together.
This sounds good on the surface, and it might be a good thing as long as (1) no freshman recruit blocks UK’s desire and ability to recruit the best players from the portal (i.e., the way it seemed to be under Calipari); and (2) the best player NOW is the one who plays - not the most “talent,” not the highest ranked in recruiting services, and not the highest projected draft pick. Otherwise, I believe a multitude of freshmen McDonalds All-Americans would be counter-productive to winning against the top teams.

In all probability, Yessoufou cutting UK has nothing to do with Wilson. Yessoufou wants to play the 3 and Wilson is a natural 4, so why would they inhibit one another? Answer: they wouldn't.

Plus, the UK staff wouldn't just call Yessoufou up hours after Wilson's non-committal visit and tell him that he's no longer a UK priority.

None of that logically adds up.

Another reason to add Wilson: he gives us another presidential name.

Washington (George) - PJ Washington
Johnson (Lyndon and Andrew) - Keldon and Jasper Johnson
Jackson (Andrew) - Isaiah Jackson
Carter (Jimmy) - Jared Carter
Ford (Gerald) - Travis Ford
Harrison (Benjamin and William Henry) - Andrew and Aaron Harrison
Hayes (Rutherford B.) - Chuck Hayes
Pierce (Franklin) - Ed Pierce
Lincoln (Abe) - Lincoln Collinsworth
Grant (U.S.) - Grant Darbyshire
Truman (Harry) - Truman Claytor
Taylor (Zachary) - Bob Taylor
Tyler (John) - Tyler Ulis
Madison (James) - Richard Madison

Missed a golden opportunity with Matthew Cleveland a few years ago. Could have given us Grover Cleveland.

Got to add Woodrow Wilson to the list.

Where's my social studies homey, @bucsrule8872 at? He'll appreciate this line of thinking.

We aren’t going to be portaling as much as some of you want. If we lose guys Pope is not expecting to lose then that’s what the portal will be for.

I’m not sure what the best guess would be on how many portal additions UK will be looking to add after the season. My guess would be 2-3. I think you’re right that if any of the guys who can come back don’t, that’s certainly a place to use the portal to add an additional player.

In general, I think the most important player group for title contention year-in-and-year-out is returning players. You have to build that base with smart high school recruiting. But for 2025-26 it seems that a PF from the portal is practically a must for UK. I think it’ll probably end up being best if UK gets a PG from the portal also.

Thinking about it more, I think the portal will be used sparingly this year because we have so many certain departures. You know what most of your needs are and can address them with high level high school recruiting. Year 2? There might be only one senior. Way different. You may have more surprise departures.

I’d really like to fill some of our final scholarships with portal players who need a year for injury rehab or for training. Something like what Louisville got in Ali Khalifa this year would be perfect for building roster depth.

Continuity is so important. I really think a lot of emphasis is going to be placed on keeping Kentucky players out of the portal.

A little off topic, but I also think early decisions for high schoolers will be emphasized. None of this waiting until April or May every year for a college decision. If you want to come here, commit. A way of identifying guys for whom playing at Kentucky means something.

He reminds me of a rich man's Terrence Jones. Very fluid with the ball. Strong. Great in transition. Good perimeter skills.

He's a massive longshot, but I love how aggressive the staff has been with him, Cenac, Brown, and Lewis.
Speaking of fluid, Acaden Lewis would be a fantastic addition to play alongside JJ. Imagine an all lefty backcourt. Lewis has great change of pace and he's super crafty with the basketball. Although he plays like a score first pg, he always seems to have his head on a swivel.

I agree on Lewis totally, if he can play some defense he will be a good one.

You never know, the rumor is those 4 guys Moreno, Wilson, Johnson, and Lewis wanna play together. Maybe Yessoufou feels like he can’t fit in or maybe he wants to stay Qest Coast. It seems like it with his list. I’d say it had to do with His Baylor visit since they have had masjid success with players at the 3 just like him recently.

The most recent past results support your position on continuity – it’s key to regularly being in the hunt for chasing titles.

But I’m not convinced that Pope is going to try to fill immediate needs with high level high school recruits – at least I hope not. Candidates to help fill needs? Sure. Let them compete for playing time and be part of a duo manning a position. But UK should be able to get their share of the best, and the best portal transfers are generally going to be better than a freshman (5-star or otherwise) to fill an immediate need. I believe that under Pope, UK is back to having its primary goal being winning championships, not recruiting titles.

I think what you’re saying about getting your high school recruits before Spring is the way to go. Because, I don’t think the best portal players are worried about competing with freshmen, as long as they believe the coach will play the guy who gives the team the best chance to win the game. On the other hand, high school guys and their camps who view them as OAD will likely be leary of being able to beat out top transfers. But once they’re signed coaches have time to show them how it will all work to benefit the team and to benefit them as well (which is a whole other discussion).
