Over the years. Who's the Top high school player from each of Ky's 16 regions ?

Don't forget about Richie "Needs More Playing Time" Farmer.

He may have been out of his league in state politics, but overachieved at UK and dominated on the high school level.
True but Frank still holds the record for most points in a D1 game(100) and was the #1 pick in the NBA draft that year and played for a decade. Pretty good for a fellow Redhound.

10th region had Chris Lofton. Alvin Sims was really good. Corey Williams wasn't bad.

As another poster mentioned earlier...in the 14th, it's Johnny Cox, although an argument could be made for Peggy Gay Moore. She played on the boys side for a majority of her high school career and was truly a trailblazer in the early days of women's basketball. Pat Summitt said she was one of the best players she ever coached against and she went on to play professionally for the Philadelphia Fox. Either way...it's those two at the top and then everyone else in the 14th.

I agree. Others..... Minnifield, Turpin, James Lee, Vince Taylor, Darnell Burton, Shelvin Mack, Junior Johnson, Jermain Brown
All were really good players. Makes one wonder what's happened to the D-1 talent in Lexington. Ted Hundley was also very good.

not sure what region PHELPS is in but i watched Irvin Stepp put up about 50 one night

not sure where Jeff Hall would rank
i think he was the coach at Rose Hill when Mayo played there

Off the top of my head, Dave Cowens, 9th Region.

If you are going strictly by performance in high school, maybe Dicky Beal. Cowens developed late and wasn't overpowering in high school.
A guy that played for Holmes and graduated i believe,in 1960. His name was Bob Barton, he was a guard and had made an verbal agreement to Adolph Rupp. Then was drafted very high in the Baseball draft and decided to go that way. I'm not old enough to remember him but older guys i know say he was the real deal http://www.rcnky.com/articles/2014/04/09/local-boys-hometown-players-cincinnati-reds-bob-barton

Hasn't all disappeared. Dunbar's Tay Hollingsworth just set the record for scoring in Lexington. That's a lot of nice players he's in front of.

first region Joe ford of F troop fame take him over fulks and Langhi either one in a game he could anything he wanted but played team ball for Vandy Kentucky missed a great one there.

Gotta remember . . . the Region numbers have changed over the years. Sorry if this was already posted.

Good Topic...

Here's a few 12th Region names:

Reggie Hanson from Pulaski Co.

Kenny Davis from Wayne Co. (was on '72 Olympic team)

Leonard Coulter from Danville who starred at Morehead St. in the early 70s

Too many really good players to name, but I can't think of any all time elites. Maybe someone else can help me out.
Tim Stephens from McCreary County could flat fill it up. Went on to Kentucky. George Bryant from old Burnside High School was a great player who had a great career at EKU.

12 region, Leonard Coulter , Danville Admirals,he should of played for Kentucky instead of Morehead State,he had a tremendous amount of talent, and motor that none could touch,a heart for all sports that I witnessed and treasured. One of my favorite memory's of Leonard was in high school, blocking a Jimmy Dan Conners shot 5 rows deep......!!!!!!!!

What a great thread, the rich history of Kentucky basketball is lost to a degree in the basketball mills of today.Kentucky high schools both big and small have turned out an amazing array of talent over the years.

I have had the great fortune to see many of them play and to even get to know a few of them.I have heard stories from some of the older guys, sure they had talent but many of the ones I knew had the "it" factor. There was just something about them that let you know they were special and they could adjust to almost any situation and were successful in other areas of life

Just wish we had at least 3-4 players that were D-1 caliber consistently. I remember watching Givens and Lee go at it and it was really a classic.

Jeff Lamp,Lee Raker deserve mention, someone mentioned Corky Withrow earlier in the thread,he was an amazing talent. He and King Kelly Coleman were similar, their teams played each other at least once with each getting 35+ if I recall correctly, Coleman's team won I think

Manuel Forrest needs to be mentioned for the 7th region. His college career fizzled out, but I believe he is still the leading scorer in Jefferson County history.

Mike Casey took shelby county to the championship and won.
In reality, Casey was the best to come out of the 8th with everyone else a distant second. Had he not gotten hurt we could have possibly had another title and he would've been one of the top guards in the NBA. Conner, Hurt and others were good but not on his level.

I watched JD In the region finals a very good player,I watched Mike about fifteen times at Shelby Co.a fantastic player.

Who is Darrell Griffin? Sheesh...

Anyway, Bender, Farley Bush and Spillman have no business on that list.

1a. Darrell GriffITH
1b. Wes Unseld
3. Allan Houston

High school only, you might have to put Mike Redd in front of both Wes and Darrell.

Yep, that's what I was gonna say. For a topic that you'd think would find wide disagreement, it seems like all the old guys uniformly say Redd was the best ever in Louisville. Which is quite a statement considering how much talent the city produced from the 60s through the 80s.

Really a shame that Casey was injured. He was not the same player after coming back from the injury. Just couldn't explode to the rim after he broke his leg. Nevertheless, he was still a very good player during his last season.

1st region: James Wells, Calloway County, 1975. He deserves a mention at least.

Glen Combs. 14th, Hindman High, is in Va Tech HOF and played 8 years in ABA at their peak averaging between 16.5 and made 3 all star games. Probably not better than Cox but would definitely be all time 14th region team.
