Over the years. Who's the Top high school player from each of Ky's 16 regions ?

Good Topic...

Here's a few 12th Region names:

Reggie Hanson from Pulaski Co.

Kenny Davis from Wayne Co. (was on '72 Olympic team)

Leonard Coulter from Danville who starred at Morehead St. in the early 70s

Too many really good players to name, but I can't think of any all time elites. Maybe someone else can help me out.

6th and 7th regions: Darrell Griffin, Tony Williams, Charlie Taylor, Brandon Bender, Paul Yaden, Dujan Wheat, Q, Terrance Farley, and although they didn't play Bball in college, Michael Bush and Jujuan Spillman.

In the 1st region, probably Joe Fulks who once scored 63 in an NBA game

A lot of people prolly don't know Joe Fulks invented the jump shot, I saw him when he was at the Kentucky state penitentiary while he was over the recreation department.

Who is Darrell Griffin? Sheesh...

Anyway, Bender, Farley Bush and Spillman have no business on that list.

1a. Darrell GriffITH
1b. Wes Unseld
3. Allan Houston

Good topic. Not the biggest expert on this sort of thing, so I have nothing to add myself. But here's a summary of what everyone's come up with so far, I think. (Feel free to amend. I'm not sure why 6th and 7th regions are combined above.) Still missing a few nominees for five of the regions.

1. Joe Fulks, Dan Langhi

2. Frank Ramsey

3. Rex Chapman, Butch Beard, Corky Withrow, Patrick Sparks

4.

5. Jim McDaniels, Clem Haskins

6 and 7. Darrell Griffith, Allan Houston, Wes Unseld, Tony Williams, Charlie Taylor, Brandon Bender, Paul Yaden, Dujan Wheat, Q, Terrance Farle

8.

9. Dave Cowens

10.

11.

12. Reggie Hanson, Kenny Davis, Leonard Coulter

13. Frank Selvey

14.

15. Kelly Coleman

16. Larry Conley, OJ Mayo

Is there anybody better than Jim McDaniels at Allen Co. In the 5th region?
I think that would be the 4th region.but agree as to the player.Jerry Dunn is worth a mention, going way back Harry Sadler(who might have been the first player in Kentucky to shoot the jump shot.)

Totally forgot about Unseld. Great call. Personally, I leave Houston off just because he spurned the Cards. My list is a bit biased with all UofL players.

Correct, Allen is the 4th region.

13th Region. I have one that few may know but this guy was unreal. His name is Nick Sanford. He was 6-6, could shoot, dribble, and very athletic.
His problem was not much help in his home and his grades. He played at LMU over in TN for a couple of years for Phil Cox who played at Vandy. I'm telling you, he was the real deal.
He was Hami Diallo 30 years ago.

With all these contributions, I may have missed several.

I know that over the years, the composition of the regions have changed a little.

When I was a kid the Louisville school's were in the 7th (and 8th?).

The old sixth region became the 5th. The 5th became the fourth region. Or maybe I'm just confused.

How about these guys?

Ron King (Clark County)
Jeff Mullins (Lafayette?)
Mike Silliman (St. X)

Here's a 12th Region great who was before my time.

Ralph Richardson from Russell Co.
Mr. Basketball in 1958
Averaged 35 ppg
20 rebounds
8 blocks
Senior year

Played two years varsity at EKU. Drafted by the Knicks but broke his hip in preseason, ending his career.

Know you were speaking high school, but in the 60s, Greg Smith
of Princeton became a good NBA player. Logged 8/9 years and more
PT than many on those on the list. Greg and Dwight were some of my favorites along with Haskins at WKU in the late 60s.

Dan Langhi, ok. No other region 1 candidates?
What about current players?

Dan played for Vandy then NBA with Rockets. 6-11, handles like a guard, knock down 3 pt shooter.

Surprised he didn't play in the league longer
  1. Joe Fulks but as far as just high school you can't overlook Stan Key from Calloway County in the first region!
