Assuming we go back to the McVay coaching tree, who are the likely OC candidates?

Heck let's give our WR coach a shot. Can't be any worse. That's depending on what CMS will/would allow him to run.

I'm questioning why go back to the McVay tree. Rams offense is awful this year. Perhaps have defenses figured it out? Continuity is good but not at the expense of producing good offense. I definitely don't want Air Raid in any form nor a system that is option/run centric. Need to have balance, be able to use the skillset of the personnel, be flexible and attractive to recruits. IMO, does not have to be a 'pro' style necessarily but can/should utilize some NFL concepts. I'd like to have a mobile QB, not necessarily a dual threat QB.

Look at the top 10 scoring teams in the NCAA. The only non power is SMU.
1 Ohio State
2 Tennessee

I would go get UT’s OC for the HC job if Stoops heads to Iowa or wherever.

Oline is 75% of problem but I can’t believe we cannot stay in front of rushers longer than we do. I mean a simple twist will
Leave guys Scott free coming at Levis
I do think Stoops will let 3 assistants go at end of season

The OL is largely a problem because the guys are lost and don't know what the hell they are supposed to be doing. That is on the coaches.

As for systems, I don't care what we run as long as it is efficient and scores points. But I think a modern spread that has a balanced run/pass ratio and uses some RPO is about the best and most versatile system for modern college football.

The issue I have with sticking to the McVey tree is the fact that the McVey disciples all seem to be in the NFL. NFL coaches don't like recruiting and all the things they have to do at the college level. So if they demonstrate some ability, they go right back to the NFL at the first opportunity. I'd rather cast a wider net rather than trying to hire a guy from a very limited pool of candidates familiar with (or runs something similar to) the McVey offense. That is how we ended up with Skanky Jello.

He had 3 Olinemen and a WR with legitimate pro potential, not to mention Epps and Ali at WR.
I’m with you about the olinemen . Ali was average . Epps barely peed a drop his whole career. Epps would never see the field on this years team . Coen basically had Levis look for Wandale and if he wasn’t open pull it down and run . I’m not sayin that was the wrong thing to do . It simplified things for Will . And Will definitely needs things to be simplified.

I mean I'm pretty damn good at Madden.
.. I could come out of retirement and call some plays. I'll do it for cheap too. Just give me a lifetime supply of Ale8🥹

I know many won’t like this take but if Scang is gone after this year I’d say Neal Brown would be a top candidate.
He’s likely done at WVU and has proven to be able to move the ball in a non Air Raid way.

I’m not sure Neal would accept an OC job at this point. Especially for Mark Stoops . And I doubt Stoops would want him . I don’t think it was a great marriage when they tried it before.

Well , “SUPPOSEDLY “ the plan was for Scang to “groom” Scott Woodward for a couple of years and he was to take over for Scan when he left . I don’t know whats going to happen with that plan now . Woodward had a year learning from Coen …..and now he’s had a year “learning “ from Scang . Would Stoops be ready to let him learn on the job ? That would be risky.

If we move from scangs, this is the choice. We can't lose this guy.

That said, I'd be shocked if scang is turned loose. We're banking on him to use his connections to bring in the QB transfer

Sad, but true. Not sure how I see that working out, though.

Asking for Stoops to bring back Neal Brown is so narrow sighted and stupid. I am amazed how many people have named Neal Brown.

Which 3?

OC
OL coach
DL coach

Edit: and if we had a Special Teams Coach, I'd fire him too....

Whoever it is will be grooming a new qb, running back, possibly a new receiver Corp if Brown, Keye, Kattus and company leave. Good luck

I thought Neal Brown did a good job considering what he had to work with while he was here. I don't see how you could really open it up with Jalen Whitlow or Max Smith at QB.
I don’t disagree. It’s hard to even judge Browns time here because we were so void of talent. I really don’t think Brown would be willing to take an offensive coordinator job though. I don’t think he will be fired this year either.

I’d keep my eyes on a certain someone already on the sidelines replacing our RB coach as well.
