NASCAR thread

I shared this in another thread but thought I would share here since most of you guys would get the references but once I got in a discussion on Twitter with Dale Earnhardt Jr because I said NASCAR rigged the July race in Daytona the next time they were there after his dad was killed so he could win. He apparently took offense to it. I just told him I had never before or since watched a single car pass a line of cars drafting at a restrictor plate race and that I thought he had a restrictor place that was bigger than everyone else since they were given out by NASCAR. He said they wouldn't risk their reputation to make sure he won the race and my response was that their reputation as being fair was ruined long before that day. 🤷‍♂️🤣

Jimmy Spencer felt the same way at the time.

I can understand people's skepticism about that race. NASCAR couldn't have written a better story if they tried.

But, DEI's dominance in that era was absolutely unmatched. Those engines were powerful and handling was key to being fast around Daytona during that time. So it isn't crazy for him to be able to pull out and pass a couple cars by himself.

Couple those cars with the son of the best super speedway driver in NASCAR and it is not a surprise he won.

The same comments are what made Jr resent Jimmy Spencer for so long. The recent episode of his podcast where he had him on was really hard to listen to IMO. Jr barely talked and most of it was Jimmy incoherently rambling. Never was a big fan of Jimmy's.

I don't think the podcast healed any of Jr's feelings towards him, either.

I get it but my biggest thing was that while they were strong at restrictor plate tracks they had to draft to pass other cars. He could pass a line of cars all by himself which as I said earlier I don't ever recall being done before and hasn't been done since. It would be very easy for NASCAR to give him a plate with a slightly bigger hole and increase his HP quite a bit to manipulate the race. I mean Steve Park did win the next week after Dale's crash and Kevin Harvick won 2 weeks after that driving Dale's old car. It seemed there were a lot of "story book endings" that season. 😉

Truex would be a great veteran to add if JR Motorsports joins the Cup Series. It's only a matter of time until Gibbs is taking over a Cup ride at JGR and would be a nice landing spot late in his career like Kurt Busch at 23XI.

At roughly halfway through the season who is your pick to win the title? I am going to say Chase since he has been pretty consistent throughout the season thus far. I have to say, while not a big name, that Chastain has a shot to pull it off if the pressure of the playoffs don't get to him and his team.

Chastain is going to be a star. Dude has no desire to be friends, just wants to win.

Ryan Newman won last week at Stafford and the points leader in SRX too!! Headed to Nashville Fairgrounds this week. If people start watching, big names like Chase & Ryan Blaney to show up they might just expand.

I like this pick too but he's got a target on his back from Denny who is probably waiting to get even when it matters the most. Larson's luck is bound to change but I like Elliott's odds this year. Even Tyler Reddick as a dark horse if he can reign it in a little bit. Like a younger Larson, great talent but can be a little aggressive.

Is there any truth to the rumors that Dodge is coming back to NASCAR?
From what I gather, it could possibly happen around 2024 according to Steve Phelps. The next generation Chargers & Challenger will be out and NASCAR plans to add hybrid technology to the sport by then. Look for SHR to make the jump, especially with their struggles and Tony's NHRA team this year is running Dodge.

Why ruin Bell's chances when Bubba is out of the picture barring a win? Christopher is sitting in good position right now running well and inside the Top 16.

Also, here's what Noah Gragson's stunt he pulled at Road America cost him. A talented driver but Gragson is the reason why he is still in the Xfinity Series while many of his fellow drivers that he came up the ranks with have full-time Cup rides already.

Oh Lord. Waltrip? Has he wrecked the entire field in a race yet?

Mark me down as picking Cindric as the next big thing. Kids got guts.

Waltrip & Ryan Hunter-Reay have an interesting feud on the track right now. Tore the hell out of each other's cars at South Boston. Starting to think Tony's meltdown on Ernie Francis was fake to start a buzz and get viewers because they were over it before the main event started. Never know with Smoke though.

Chase and Blaney need to stay in their own lane. This is mostly retired drivers.

I don't have a problem with them or Deegan showing up for 1 race if it brings more attention to the series. I enjoyed Chase & Bill racing each other up front at Nashville last year and if this were to help SRX expand, I'm ok with it. Like David Starr was saying, it's been looked at as a retirement tour but proved to be more than that. We've seen Biffle return to the Cup Series since racing in it. Newman has yet to officially close the door on a return but won't just run for a back of the pack team at this point. Beating young guys in equal equipment would only prove Newman still has it but was in some garbage equipment the latter half of his career. More impressive in the #6 than Brad has been.
