More potentially bad news about Diallo

So, I guess what MJ heard was wrong.

We are all just spitting in the wind here. Maybe he wanted the more elite invite, but still plans to play? Or maybe he's reserving his right to bow out of 5 on 5 at any moment.

We will know soon enough.

Maybe I do not understand the situation. How can they draft anyone in the first round and spend millions of dollars on them without seeing him compete.Since he went to UK he only had an opportunity to play just a hand full of games in HS this year? What is the NBA going to base their decision on?

Maybe he will just get drafted and never play in the NBA either, seems like he is reluctant to play anywhere.

He does seem to be hiding somewhat.

Some of you kill me. Diallo is a future millionaire either way. He's going to be FINE. He doesn't need you spitting Calipari talking points and backing his every move. Honestly he doesn't give a damn what any UK fan thinks as he trolled the hell out of us which is quite evident if you read his comments.

Worry about this roster and let the little future millionaire and his family put on the spin job. Or just go be a fan of the NBA and let real UK fans worry about the roster.

Not sure of the thinking here. He now has the right to not play if he so wishes?
I don't get it. If he has improved like has been said, why not go show everyone? If this is your dream, go out and ball.
Is he expecting to get picked in the 1st round without giving these teams something to look at besides mix tapes against high schoolers?
I hope this kid is getting good advice.

You do realize he's still on the roster, correct?

Yes. I'm talking about people buying into the recruiting talking points to the point where they don't even care about this roster. It's sick.

Ahh.. I gotcha.

I fully admit that I've followed recruiting less for next year's class than i ever have before, so I don't know near as much about what to expect, outside of being young. Hopefully SKJ/Gabrial/Tai can provide something. As for Diallo, I still think there's a solid chance he returns and hopefully we can get 2 of the Bamba/Knox/Johnson trio.

I love Cal but if this doesn't pan out I just hope he never even considers this again.Johnson is a must get with 3 guards on our roster.

I hope Cal goes for and gets EVERY Top 10 player who graduates in December. You can win unless you throw the dice. Maybe Diallo stays and maybe he goes pro.
We should not take this prrsonally. Cal threw the dice to get a Top 10 player.

I think Cal knew all of this was gonna happen(Declaring with a possibility of staying in). Come to Ky, don't play to protect your stock, declare for the draft and get a shot at a really good player coming back to play next season. Cal is always ahead of the game so I think he knew it was a risk but one he was willing to take. I think that's what sold Diallo on coming here. I think he told coaches what he wanted to do. Uconn wanted him to play right away. Cal said come in, declare and if you come back you have some practice under your belt and we're good to go.

Cal probably figured there was a high probability he wouldn't go first round though and wasn't expecting Diallo to wanna stay in even if 2nd round(If that's the case)

Pretty much my position as well. No way Cal didn't prepare for scenario A,B, and C. My only addition would be that I believe Cal is calling the shots and encouraging it all as well.

Can't wait until we have 6 players sit out, declare, get drafted in the first round and listen to Cal talk about how it's the greatest day in the history of the program.
i guess it depends on who says certain things on this board that determine if they get a pass. You are my hero sir you must have beaten all the trolls into submission, i am not that lucky, i feel the same way but about 4 trolls stuck to my body and followed every post i made and wanted to argue for a whole week. Amazing.

This kid has the wrong people in his ear. The fear of actually competing and showing your weaknesses has to be a red flag for NBA teams. And also for UK. Is he going to constantly play in fear of making a mistake or being injured if he does come back? I've said it more than once. Don't think he beats out Alexander if his competitive fire is that low.

MJ just said that he heard initially Diallo got the invite where he would have to play at the combine, but when it was communicated that he would likely not go, it was changed to the invite where you just have to get measured and can play if you want. That's what the first rounders get.
he may as well have not even been here so even be concerned about what he does

It's only bad news if you are selfish. Great news for the young man

when I say there is a segment here that couldn't care less about Kentuckys position, this is what I mean. Sick in the head and need to root for these NBA franchises instead of a college basketball team.

I get the system and I'm fine with it, but some of you are going to be an interesting case study.

If he goes to the combine simply to interview, get measurements and feedback I think he's coming back. He's just using the process to be better prepared for next year or whenever he goes in and hires an agent. I hope so anyway.

That linked website says he is going to play now. I doubt he will improve his stock much though. A lot of seasoned guys trying to get paid is a bit different than practice and HS competition.

He could have helped the team, instead of just practicing. What is there to be ok with?

He probably could not have competed or contributed in the middle of the year. Not sure how you figure out who he could have replaced and how he could have been better, but okay.

I felt that Diallo's initial statement indicated he was leaving, rightly or wrongly. That said, while I suppose tea leaves can be read in different ways, I don't take this necessary to be bad news. It could just as easily be indicative that he just wants to go through the process so he's more prepared for it next year. If that's true, I could see him balking at the idea of having to play, as opposed to merely getting a feel for what teams are focusing on.

Either way, I'm at the point where I'm tired of this story. I would hope it hasn't come down to us having a none-and-done program. That will be a sad day for college basketball, in general, and fans, in particular. And while I understand that players being drafted promotes our program, I also believe that the program, ultimately, doesn't exist without the support of BBN. So I think that while it's appropriate to promote the players' interests, it's just as important (if not more so) to never let the fans forget that they are the lifeblood of the program.

Not me. It's about Cal, the players, and the BBN. It's NOT just about Cal and the players. Several posters disagree.

Wait, how do we KNOW he's in fear? How do we know he backed out due to his fear of being exposed? Is it possible that he is only trying to dip his toe in to get feedback and not want to waste anyone's time at the combine?
My impression is he's actually trying to stick to the plan he and Cal have, which was/is to come to UK in January, practice with the team for the rest of the season, go to the NBA workouts, get feedback from Pro coaches, then return and play the 17/18 season at UK and be a lottery pick.
I have no earthly idea why everyone thinks he is for sure jumping to the nba because he's skipping out on the combine.
To me, it seems he's doing the opposite. If he was serious about going to the NBA and thought he had the game to go to the league he would show what he could do. Cowering/hiding in this situation is an awful move and one I can't believe Cal would advise.

Sounds like Matt Jones was wrong and he's going to play now.

Going to the combine and not playing? How is that different than not going to the combine?

I'd Diallo's head is not in college basketball, leave. I have no problem with these guys leaving in a traditional way, extending as far as one year. That's fine. But it's obvious he's not the least bit concerned with playing here. They are doing everything they can to gain the system and get paid. Fine, but make it official and do it. Dot come back here skittish and scared, hiding yourself from injury or perception. Just f'n go if that's the case.

Maybe not this board, but uk fans in general are going to grow tired of this, especially if we go 4 or 5 years without a final four.

What?...we go another 4 or 5 years without a final four. Cal would be gone, and rightfully so...
I don't know anyone who says a seven year final four drought is acceptable for UK.

Many on here called coach K out for playing Giles and letting his stock drop

But now are upset with the possibility of Diallo protecting his NBA stock

seems like a bit of hypocrisy to me
Diallo didn't and doesn't have an injury history. Big difference in that and a struggling jumper.

This board is not an indication of how most fans feel. People are getting tired of the missed opportunities. You get bashed if you mention it on here.
