I have read some of the thread on here about my comments on the show today reading posts from here criticizing Calipari. My reasoning for do it is very simple...I find criticisms of Calipari's time at Kentucky bizarrely stupid...as I made clear on the show, every coach is susceptible for criticism of a particular decision or coaching move, but those who then make grand pronouncements (which is what I was mocking today) are in my view, slightly insane. Many who responded on the thread seem to have made their opinion based on not hearing the show, but instead what people say about what I said (which I think happens often). But my guess is few would quibble too much with my actual comments.
As for talking about this board, I came from the message board community. As long time UK message board fans can attest, my writing on message boards goes back to the late 90s and was the springboard for my UK work. When the blog started in 2005, the message boards without question helped me launch it and I have a soft spot in my heart for them. Cats Illustrated (and its previous incarnations) has always been a great site and Justin/TJ and everyone else currently do a very good job. However, I do think message boards foster some of the worst of UK fandom. Like with everything else, 95% of the fans on here are great and even when going overboard, mean well and are what makes BBN excellent. But the 5% who are not get a chance to anonymously (my biggest problem with the whole thing) make ridiculous statements that garner attention (as the worst comments in life always do) and make our fan base look bad. That has always been my problem with them even when I was on them all the time back in the day. But every forum has weaknesses (including blogs), and that is just the one for message boards.
I don't read these message boards as much as I used to (except GYERO), but I do check in. While this is still the most popular one, the message board framework (outside of HOB) isn't as popular because of Twitter, Facebook, KSR, etc. This used to be the only place to find out about UK and it isn't anymore. But the fan interaction part is still very valuable to me as a radio host, as it allows me to see what a certain segment of the UK fan base thinks. Message board commenters tend to be older than Twitter and also have more football diehards on it. Thus it is valuable for me as a radio host to hear their point of views. Rather than being angry about it, or saying I am "stealing" from it, it should be a compliment. The reality is there is only so much news...Drew and Tyler never visit here but they will have the same stories as here because...well because we are all talking about the same things. But for me, reading your views (especially when it is about how much a minority of you hate me and think I should be run out of town) is entertaining and helps the show.
So that's that....killing time at the station and thought I would write.
