Malik Newman announcing decision on Friday

Maybe it's a good thing that it's closed. If it was in his gym and open, you think he would want to please the crowd.

Glad this is coming to an end. I expect it to be MSU but will be watching for a different choice.

Any correlation to the Mulder visit this weekend Friday or Saturday and Newman's announcement or is that over-thinking it?

The fact that there's been veritably no UK movement with Newman for as long as I can remember probably isn't a good sign.

I tend to think Mississippi State fired Rick Ray and brought Howland in primarily to have an angle with Newman. If Ray were still there I'd feel extremely confident that it's UK; as it is I think the family connection and the fact that Newman has stated he wants to play the point doesn't look good.

I think one of the main reasons it is closed is because he has been filming a documentary for over 2 years now and he wants this to be apart of it, instead of everyone in the media being able to show it.

I am probably just reading into it too much, but being closed I think that means UK. Like another said, if he was choosing Miss. St., wouldn't he want to do it in front of his peers that are MSU fans? Might not want to see their disappointed faces and reactions when he picks UK.

Does this remind anyone of a Devin Booker recruitment? He had a strong pull to go play where his dad did.....I didn't get that feeling with James Blackmon Jr.

If you decide to play basketball at Miss. St., you're not serious about getting better in one year. Howland should not be able to reel in a 5 star recruit 1 month into the job.

It worked terrific for Booker, and I would think Newman would take notice of that. Cal isn't going to hurt your rep getting to the next level.

does anybody know of his high school is in ole miss territory. that may be a better reason for him announcing in a private ceremony then announcing for Kentucky.

Who goes to Mississippi State if they have any aspirations to play NBA ball?

Anyone?

Dreams go to Starkville to die. Just ask Renardo Sydney.

Yeah, I'm positive that he's only making it a closed setting because he doesn't want to get beat up after he leaves the school........
Really though, I don't exactly see him coming to UK, but that incentive is there to going to Mississippi State? I have no doubt that he seen the 30 Mississippi State fans that went to the Kentucky game of all games. I have no doubt that he seen them lose a ton of games last season and come in last, maybe next to last, only in front of Mizzou (ironically enough, considering Booker's dad went the Mizzou), and I have little doubt that he watched some videos over Howland's old teams, and seen how they play ball. Russell Westbrook wasn't today's Russell Westbrook at UCLA. He was pretty underwhelming actually, so there's a chance Newman goes to UK.
That said, seeing Briscoe's game on the All-Star circuit, and knowing what Ulis is capable of, I'm very confident in our backcourt. Superb ball handlers, pickpockets, excellent dribble penetration and mid-range game, shoots the 3 pretty well, both have great court vision and passing ability, and both can get very hot. Add in the top JUCO who is a ridiculous athlete, big, shoots the 3 at an incredible percentage, and also has decent court vision, and we have a dangerous, explosive backcourt.
Get a couple of big athletes up front (something we have no shortage of. Skal, Poy, Lee, possibility of Diallo, and in likelihood, bringing in one big guy that can bang around in the post), and you have an overall dangerous team. Especially since Skal could just move to the 4, and have a pretty good size advantage, athleticism advantage, and the advantage of having an explosive offensive game, and terrific defensive instincts.
Either way, Newman can choose to play with not-so-great players around him, or he can choose to play with elite players around him. UK will be fine regardless.

I know the crystal can't be 100% trusted, but it's usually a pretty big indicator. Every pick the last 3 weeks has gone towards MSU, everyone must be hearing the same information.

Now that we might get Murray, I'm kinda hoping Newman doesn't pick us. I know it's risky, but if getting him means we lose Murray......

I forget who it was, but one of the regular posters is Newman's biggest fan and seems to think our chances next season rise and falls with whether we get him or not. Haven't seen him other than clips and the All-Star games, so my opinion is not well-informed, and I admit that I am influenced by some of scuttlebutt, but am I wrong to think he doesn't seem to fit in with how Cal does things? More of a gunner, less of a "team" guy. I know that's simplistic, and I'm sure he isn't all that selfish or I don't think Cal would be interested.

Seems like there's a lot of echo chambering that goes on with recruiting.

One guy will put something on Twitter and then it's parroted by a handful of others. You saw this with Nerlens and Georgetown: one guy was saying it, and then all of a sudden it blew up.

I think the number of people who really have an in with these kids is relatively small, and most of the recruiting analysts use common sense and/or piggyback off of those legitimately in the know.

Very good athlete that can score, although not a shooter. He has been an enigma in the all-star games, but many thinking he has "team" issues or selfish could or could not be true. Cal is good at vetting these players off his offer list, so let him worry about that - we need scorers next year and I believe Cal would welcome him with open arms!!

Don't see any way he comes here. He (or his "people") wants to be a point guard, that isn't going to happen here. They've really got it pumped into this kids head that he's going to be a point guard, when to me he's the perfect compliment to Ulis and Briscoe as an off guard shooter that get's set up for big time outside shots and can occasionally run the point.

I think he picks LSU. He can play point guard, and he'll be surrounded by other studs. He's spoken highly of those guys as recently as last week.

The trouble with that is this: LSU already has two ball dominant wing players. The only safe haven for Newman is Mississippi State if he wants to run point guard 38 minutes a game and dominate the ball. I'd really question his competitive spirit, however, if he picks the Bulldogs. It would basically place a neon sign on top of the kid's head which reads: I DON'T CARE ABOUT WINNING.

Do these kids ever consider how that view will be interpreted by NBA general managers who are risking millions on them?

I agree I think this is what going on with this kid.

This. Hasn't he made it pretty clear he want to play the point?
It would be a mind boggling decision, but sounds like it's MSU to me.

i cant believe this class. unreal. newman is going to miss st. i pray murray reclassifies.

There's a mixtape of Newman where he asks the guy who's guarding him "You scared?" So the kid has a lot of confidence. If you watched the recent All Star games you may have noticed that Briscoe doesn't lack confidence either. If both of those guys played for UK, the air over on Euclid Avenue might start to smell as bosky as a high school chess tournament from the testosterone.

Probably no coincidence that Cal went out of his way to praise Rick Ray last season.

^ Renardo Sidney's problem was Renardo Sidney. Not Mississippi State.
You are correct that Renardo was his own worst enemy, but are you honestly going to tell me that Rick Stansbury or the university assisted him in cleaning up his act in any way? I know Rick is not there anymore, but it still was Mississippi State then as it is now.

What can they offer a NBA lottery pick? National televised games every week? A chance at a championship? 3 number one picks in the last 6 years? None. Ben Howland isn't going to change that either. We currently have 18 NBA players and will soon add atleast 6-7 more this year. Mississippi State currently has.....drumroll please.....Zero.

I don't think he cares about what his high school people will say if he were to pick UK. I think his choice to do close door is because he wants to keep it family focused.

that has to cross the minds of Cat fans, I think a Milder signing would end any chance at Newman, but if Newman should opt for UK(don't think he will) would that end our intrest in Mulder?Would we take them both if no one else comes?

That would be me. I'm a huge fan because I saw him against Thon Maker ad Jamal Murray at the Hoopfest and he was unreal. His range is nuts and he rarely missed a shot. He hit a turnaround fadeaway that only Kobe hits. He scored even when double and triple teamed. He hit numerous 3's and also drove and scored at the rim even with Maker being there. He's the best offensive guard I've seen in a decade. He was the best looking player I've ever seen at Hoopfest and that includes Wiggins. He reminds me of a bit more athletic Brandon Knight that's also a little better on offense as well. I think he is a better shooter with more range than Knight also. He did shoot a lot but it was more due to his team not having many good players. He's not the selfish player many make him out to be. He can actually pass very well. We have no go to guy that can take over a game like Knight, Newman would be that guy. That's why next year won't be 2011 without Malik.
