Maalik Murphy Duke QB visiting UK today.

In another thread I posted about getting Murphy. I was roasted by a couple of posters. "He had 11 INTs", "he can't scramble", "he throws dinks and dunks". I countered back with "3,000 years and 29 TD's is 3,000 yards and 29 TD's, no matter how you get it." Not to mention it was his first year as a starter and has 2 years left to play.

It can be with a 60% completion rate and 12 INTs.
60 percent isn’t bad lol. The ints aren’t great but it was his first year as starter. I would’ve loved for our QB to have had those numbers last year. Not to mention who exactly do yall think we can get in the portal? Come on lol

Those stats were against acc teams. With our inept offense and sec defenses, will be a challenge for him to replicate here.

Devin Leary threw for 3400+ yards and 35 TD's with only 5 int's in 2021 at NC St. How'd that work out for us when we got him. Leary wasn't the most mobile guy either. We need a guy with some pocket presence who is a threat to run as well.

Most of that was our fault. Leary was a spread shotgun QB. He was not a under center pro style passing QB. It was not a good fit.

He then was hurt in 2022 and not sure the version UK got was ever the same physically as the 2021 season.

Not overwhelming, but I would have gladly taken his production this season vs. what we got (understanding we played an SEC slate and he played a much weaker ACC slate):

Meh game v. FSU, but they got the win. Passing Stat Line for each game (not much of a runner...so left those stats out):

Leary gets a lot of crap for a guy that put up the most TD's in a UK uniform since Andre Woodson in 2007. Leary went for 25TD's, 12INT's and 2,746 yards. In comparison, Levis went for 24TD's, 13INT's and 2,827 yards in 2021. I know stats aren't everything, but I've never understood the Leary hate. Was he great? no. Was he a solid QB at UK? yes

He's the 4th ranked QB in the portal who has a year starting under his belt. I'm not sure we will find a better QB than him in the portal.

Leary didn't have a good completion percentage but otherwise was solid.

Then you had to be relatively pleased with Devin Leary's stat line at UK which wasn't all that much different.

If you could have put Levis and Leary's game together you would have a pretty good QB. Leary was terrible at the deep ball while Levis was pretty good. Leary was mostly solid hitting the underneath guys and Levis mostly struggled with it.

I was under the impression Hamdan likes a dual threat QB. I don't know anything about Duke's offense this past season, but looking at Murphy's numbers he had negative rush yards on the season on 19 attempts, 12 of which were sacks, so only 7 scrambles all season. Maybe he has more of an ability to run it than he showed last year (hence the transfer?), but my first impression is he's a pure pocket passer. What am I missing?

We aren’t going to get anyone with gaudy numbers at this point but I’ll take someone that can just find ways to make a few plays in critical situations. Whoever that is.

Not really, and not sitting here praying for Murphy to come either. Just stated I would have rather had his production from our QB1 this season (mainly the 26 TDs).

Murphy is a pure pocket passer and not a run threat, so I don’t see the fit with what Hamden wants to do. I will still gladly take him here as he is very talented, but the liberty QB salter is the perfect fit for what Hamden wants to do

Don't think you are missing too much. he was considered a "Pro Style QB" coming out of HS. Played mainly in a shotgun fast-paced ("aggressive style") offense at Duke under OC Jonathan Brewer (who had previously been the OC at SMU).

Speaking of SMU, I would not mind us kicking the tires of Preston Stone.

Just would be very concerned that he had negative running yardage. Unless the Oline improves 100%, it isn’t going to be any different than BVG.

You can’t be accurate when you drop back and can’t even set your feet with a DLineman or LB right in your face.

Rowland seems to be pushing the Wash St QB.

Hopefully the new OL guys fix that. Mentioned elsewhere, Murphy is said to get rid of the ball in 2 seconds.

If he was only sacked 12 times, can he bring his OL with him?
