Labissiere and Briscoe

No, just...no.

"Maybe" but KAT in front of Briscoe?? Are you nuts?

You are comparing Charles Matthews to Devin Booker and Jimmy Butler???

Nope didn't compare him to Booker at all just said he could do what Booker did this year and surprise some people. As far as the Jimmy Butler comparison, I'd like to see you come up with a better one. Nice try though clown.

Like I said it's hard to compare them. It's apples to oranges. I know some of you just can't wrap your minds around it, but its possible that Briscoe makes a bigger impact than KAT.

KAT appeared to be our only scoring option at the end, if that is true with Briscoe we will not be vey good.

Butler played 4 years of college ball, so are you thinking Mathews takes a similar course?

Are you basing this on anything besides blind hope? Because they haven't even practiced, let alone played a game yet.

Skal and Briscoe have actually practiced and played a lot of games. I guess your name must be Jimmy Dykes. Contrary to your belief, players actually do learn how to stretch and do layup drills before they get to college.

Did he actually say this?

Not that I know of, its basically implied at this point. I predict Matthews will be one and done. I know many will disagree, but they are the same people who saw Bledsoe and Booker as 2-3 year players. It's not news that top recruits come here to be OAD. Forget Rivals ranking of Matthews, he is top 15 in this class.

I don't care about star rankings. Booker was a 4 star, so you're wrong anyway.

I stand corrected on Booker, but he was #29 and considered by many to be the best shooter in the class.

Charles is #48 without an amazing skill on offense (Booker) or defense (MKG). He is an athletic 2 guard ranked much lower than Archie was.

The star rankings do two things in my opinion.

1. The higher ranked kids get a lot more exposure and you can bet the NBA sees them much earlier.

2. They are ranked against their peers in that class. It is hard to believe someone ranked 48th in a class of high school seniors will be considered top 30 in America for the NBA in less than a year, without a crazy physical feature- 7 ft with 48 inch vertical or great shooter or something.

I will say I hope you are right and the kid explodes, we could definitely use that from his spot.

2015-16 vs. 2010-11

G Ulis > Knight

I'll take a Sophomore Ulis over a Freshman Knight at PG. Remember Knight struggled through most of the season before having an incredible late season run. Most on here were saying things like, "he's a SG, not a PG" all season. Ulis should be much more consistent overall.

G Briscoe > Lamb

Briscoe is higher rated as a Freshman. He won't shoot as well, but handles better. He will be better backing up the 1 than Lamb was.

G Mulder << Miller

Miller came on strong as a Junior. Mulder is a mystery.

F Poythress = Jones

Senior Poythress or Freshman Jones. That is close. Jones struggled early and came on strong. I expect a little more consistency from Poythress as a Senior.

F Labissiere >>> Harrellson

No comparison. Labissiere is a potential number one pick. Harrellson played way better than expected, but still wasn't a superstar like Labissiere should be.

G Matthews << Liggins

A Freshman Matthews won't be as good as a Junior Liggins. Liggins really came on that season and was a great defender. Matthews could be a great defender as well, but he won't be "Junior Liggins" good.

F Lee >>> Vargas

Lee is going to be a major contributor, Vargas barely played. Got to think Lee makes more of an impact, since he should get a lot more minutes.

G Hawkins >> Hood

Hawkins is a lot better and more experienced at this point in their respective careers.

2010-2011 never went more than eight deep, mostly played six guys. I expect 2015-16 to be similar. Cal will go seven deep most games this coming season.

That's like saying Stacey Poole came here to be a one-and-done. A bit of a stretch. He was rated #33 overall by Rivals.

It's really not like that at all. I think Stacey believed he was one and done before he set foot on campus and got his reality check. Matthews is not Stacey Poole. That was honestly a really stupid thing to say.

How do people not understand this by now? Players come here to be one and done, it is the furthest thing from a secret. Charles Matthews has always been considered an NBA prospect despite his drop in the High School rankings. HS rankings are taken as gospel by some of you and I really don't understand it.

Your rudeness isn't necessary to the discussion.

What physical attribute or skill set does Charles have to make you think he is OAD?

I disagree wholly with your opinions on star rankings. A higher star ranking absolutely does not equal more exposure. See if anyone talks about Ivan Rabb, Jaylen Brown, or Jamal Murray this year. Even high ranked west coast kids get little to no exposure. Also, you get all the exposure you could ever want at UK no matter if you were ranked #1 or #50. High School rankings mean absolutely nothing to NBA Scouts and GM, just ask Andrew and Aaron.

As to your second point, I realize it's hard for YOU to believe that Matthews could be a round 1 pick in the next draft, but its not hard for me. Matthews is ranked #48 but they have Austin Grandstaff ranked ahead of him. Matthews will be in the NBA, Grandstaff probably won't. It doesn't take much to see the flaws in the High School rankings. Like I said before, Matthews will be one of the top 15 college players from his class, so it doesn't matter that someone put 47 high school players in front of him. It means nothing.

bucs,

I could see this on paper. However with this current team, I see:

The need for a go to scorer - Knight is by far the best on either squad.

Skal needing support on offense - Lee does not provide that. Poy has only been effective on drop offs and put backs as well. Jones is a super addition to low post scoring.

Again scoring may be our biggest issue - if Briscoe can get buckets consistently it will definitely help, most of us were very confident every time Lamb let it go...

This year's team will be very interesting to watch as the season starts.

Agree to disagree on the star issue but...

What physical attribute or skill set does Charles have to make you think he is OAD?

I hope Matthews is that good.

The 3 spot is our weak spot on paper.

He was a 5-star before his injury.

I just hope he can play defense, rebound, and knock down the occasional jumper.

Physical attribute? That's easy, he is a long athlete who will be able to guard 1-3 in college and NBA. He is a competent ball handler and slasher. His shot is developing and I think he will gain confidence in his shot as the year goes along. What I like most about Matthews are his intangibles. He is a lot like Ulis in that regard. He has unwavering focus, Chicago toughness, heart and will to win. He is a very versatile player and I know Cal likes him a whole lot. He is vastly underrated by Rivals and even our own fan base. If he was still a top 15 recruit like he should be and was when he committed, our fans would be a lot more excited. That's how BBN is right now though, we are spoiled and most of our fans think the only route to success is to exclusively sign 5 stars. Again the rankings mean nothing and the stars mean nothing once you step on the court.

We could look at it this way:

Labissiere is on par with Jones as a low post scorer, probably better as incoming Freshman.

Poythress is better than Harrellson.

Lee is better than Vargas.

So a Labissiere/Poythress/Lee rotation at the 4/5 spots is potentially better than a Jones/Harrellson/Vargas rotation.

Compare Knight and Briscoe as scorers. Both are pretty good.

I think we are better inside in 2015-16, at least equal at the point. We are not as strong on the wings as 2010-11, though. That is my biggest concern. Specifically shooting the ball. Knight/Lamb/Miller/Liggins are likely much better shooters than Ulis/Briscoe/Mulder/Matthews will be.

UK 1-7 will be very good next year, but nothing past that. Practice will be very easy and non-challenging for the players. You can't expect Walk-ons to provide any challenge.

Yeah but Ulis, Lee, and Poythress are already battle tested so the concern is the freshman not getting tested as much in practice as compared to past UK teams. It would help to have another NBA lockout to have some of our pros come down like they did a few years ago during the last lockout.

But with a lot of playing time up for grabs, those 5-9 guys are going to have to earn it in practice. As of right now, its wide open for Lee, Mulder, Matthews, Willis and Hawkins. Obviously we can't recreate how competitive practices were this year, but I can't see them being non challenging. I think battles between Ulis and Briscoe will be nasty. This team needs to be tough as nails and gritty, that's mostly on them and they are the ones who have to make it happen in practice.

LOL, OK, I'm the clown in this situation...oh the world of UK internet forums, so far removed from reality.

I think we will lose 6-7 games in the regular season but will be primed to make a run in the tourney. By the time March rolls around we'll find where our scoring will come from and be fine.

"most of our fans think the only route to success is to exclusively sign 5 stars"

Once again you think you know what is in my mind. I could say that some of our fans overvalue our recruits because they are coming to UK...

As to your phrase above, it is very difficult to lose 7 underclassmen to the NBA and replace them with fewer kids who were not as highly ranked. And their ranking is all we have to go by as far as their ability before they arrive on campus.

As to Mathews you did not mention one thing that stands out as a better NBA prospect than a whole bunch of other kids. 6'5 athletes without a tremendous jump shot is most likely the largest talent pool for the NBA.

You say he is underrated, I hope he is, but how many games have you seen in person (not that you would be honest), how many games have you seen in person of the 47 ranked above him?

It is all conjecture. As I said before I hope you are right.

But as of now there is not a consensus that he will be Top 15, he doesn't possess a super skill or off the chart measurables. Just your opinion, which we all are rooting for.

Cal likes him a lot, that is a great sign, he has also touted all of his kids even those that are not 1st rounders.

You seem to think much higher of yourself and your opinions than you do the rest of us. Just like you, we all pretty much have the same information to base opinions on.

Not sure why you compare Skal - Jones and Poy - Harrison, exact opposite positions?

Irregardless, your points are well taken, if this group can get to the FF as well, that would be great season IMHO.

LOL, OK, I'm the clown in this situation...oh the world of UK internet forums, so far removed from reality.

The guy has to come across as a d!ck to everyone, not sure why? He seems knowledgable, but is so immature to those that may disagree with him.

Thanks for the snark, but judging by others' responses it seems like your previous statements outweigh mine in terms of ignorance content. Get over yourself.

Your rudeness isn't necessary to the discussion.

What physical attribute or skill set does Charles have to make you think he is OAD?
Exactly. What part of his game is SO unlike Stacey Poole's, Doron Lamb's, Deandre Liggins's, Jodie Meeks's, Alex Legion's, Joe Crawford's, or Kelenna Azubuike's (all vaguely similar body types/skill sets and comparably ranked/touted out of high school if not moreso) that makes him "one-and-done" material? Go home dude, your drunk.

I have high hopes for Matthews, but let's see him on the big boy court first.

The guy has to come across as a d!ck to everyone, not sure why? He seems knowledgable, but is so immature to those that may disagree with him.

I mean I started the thread and it lead to discussion like I wanted it to. People act like my opinions are half baked and out of left field. Obviously, my opinions are pretty well thought out and articulate.

And if you disagree with me and use Stacey Poole as your counter-argument, then yeah I'm likely going to belittle you. Everyone on this board is a jerk, so I have to be a jerk to make my point sometimes.

I think you have knowledge and respect your opinion.

Calling people names, dismissing their opinions, and the whole aura that you are better than folks on here just doesn't come across very well.

You have no idea who you are talking to either, i for one was part of the staff that established the Scout/24/7 recruiting model. I have been at more games, more camps, more combines, reported on more kids than almost anyone on here.

(TJ and JR are doing a hell of a job and flying by my experience at a rapid rate however.)

Really? C'mon man. You are talking with grown men on here, act like it. I know you are smart enough to come across respectful and still get your point across.

Poole was ranked 15 spots higher in the final rankings by Rivals, they have similar body styles, and similar skill sets...how is my comparison that far off base again?

And if you disagree with me and use Stacey Poole as your counter-argument, then yeah I'm likely going to belittle you. Everyone on this board is a jerk, so I have to be a jerk to make my point sometimes.
I mean, I respect your opinion...and just like mine, that's exactly what it is -- an opinion. No need to resort to 3rd-grade level insults because someone opines differently than yourself.

I just want to know why my statement is so outlandish? Is there documented proof somewhere out there that touts Matthews as a OAD and refutes Poole (or the others I mentioned) as even a somewhat valid comparison other than your own opinion? Unless there is, I'm not sure there's validity to calling them "really stupid."

Call it what you want, it was a stupid comparison and I'm not sorry for pointing it out.

Poole was ranked 15 spots higher in the final rankings by Rivals, they have similar body styles, and similar skill sets...how is my comparison that far off base again?

Because like I keep saying, rankings don't matter and Matthews isn't Poole they are 2 completely different people. They may be similar in position/body type but Stacey was immature and selfish. Matthews doesn't strike me as such a player at all. Everyone thinks they can say whatever they want because "its their opinion". Hate to break it to some of you but opinions on this board are often stupid and wrong. Opinions can be wrong. Remember that.

Since we're keeping score, just remember that yours is an opinion as well.

I'm glad Matthews doesn't strike you that way since you have probably been around & interacted with both he and Poole on several different occasions.

Sheesh, I'm done arguing man. You just can't find any common ground with people whose mottos are "my way or the highway." This board is full of them, and they're not worth the time.

Lol you all are so hostile just calm down. I feel like if Matthews doesn't go OAD you all will try to throw it back in my face because that's what this board is all about. I would be happy as hell if Charles comes back after his freshman season, but it not about me. You all are the ones acting like its a ridiculous notion that he could be one and done. It very well may happen, there is a reason Matthews is at UK, do I really have to explain what that reason is? He's an NBA prospect and we know how that works. If you are projected first round, you go. Matthews will be a first round pick, and it will likely be next year. Once again, I don't care about his ranking. I'm going by what I hav seen, what Cal has said, and what has happened in the past. Nobody has come up with a reasonable argument against it besides citing Stacey Poole, Liggins, etc. not being OAD first rounders. Until someone comes on here and tells me what his glaring weaknesses are that would prevent him being drafted next year, I will continue to belittle your atrociously flawed arguments, and I'm not sorry. Seriously someone break Matthews down without mentioning his High School ranking, former players with similar body type, or his "inconsistent" jumpshot (remains to be seen, remember Doron Lamb wasn't heralded as a great shooter out of HS). That's all I've seen anyone on this thread say against him

You are a tool and put words in my mouth so I'm not really worried about what you say or why you need to convince yourself that Matthews can't be OAD. I've never said he absolutely will be, I just think he will be. And yeah bro I know that's an opinion. But I've explained why its my opinion, unlike you and others in this thread. That's why I can call your opinion stupid and baseless, and you can't say the same about mine. Just because it's "your" opinion doesn't make it sacred. You still have to be able to explain WHY you formed your opinion. If you disagree with me that's fine, but if you say "well Stacey Poole wasn't OAD and he was ranked #33" then I'm not gonna pull punches, I'll just tell you you are a moron.
