Regarding Kobe, one cannot deny his status among the greats of all time. However, I have been utterly confused by this over the top love fest for a guy whose team has been garbage the last couple years (except Randle of course :sunglasses:) and especially this year. I've never been a fan of Kobe, but again, as a basketball fan I can admit his skill and effect on the game, especially in his prime. I just don't 'feel the love' like all the other fans. Am I alone?

To the current crop of players in the league, he is their MJ.

This has nothing to do with the last couple years. It's about what he did before tearing his Achilles.

To those that say he is a rapist...

...was this ever proven? Is it possible it's a chuck hayes situation? I honestly don't know..

I remember seeing kobe when he wasn't starting. .hard to believe thst was 20ish years ago

Never proven and basically no different. The only difference is Chuck Hayes played for UK.

He is a rapist and an utterly selfish athlete. I will not watch his coronation tonight. It disgusts me.
You act like its fact. He was never convicted of anything. Also, name ONE other time that he has even had so much as a brush with the law outside of that one incident in his 20 year career?

This is Kobes statement after the sexual assault case,

"First, I want to apologize directly to the young woman involved in this incident. I want to apologize to her for my behavior that night and for the consequences she has suffered in the past year. Although this year has been incredibly difficult for me personally, I can only imagine the pain she has had to endure. I also want to apologize to her parents and family members, and to my family and friends and supporters, and to the citizens of Eagle, Colo.

I also want to make it clear that I do not question the motives of this young woman. No money has been paid to this woman. She has agreed that this statement will not be used against me in the civil case. Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.

I issue this statement today fully aware that while one part of this case ends today, another remains. I understand that the civil case against me will go forward. That part of this case will be decided by and between the parties directly involved in the incident and will no longer be a financial or emotional drain on the citizens of the state of Colorado.[17]"

The bolder part, by his own admission means it wasn't concensual. He's a rapist.

Well, the criminal case against him was dropped. Does that not carry any weight?
No. It carries no weight. On the contrary, when you give someone a large amount of money in exchange for dropping the criminal charges, then you're essentially admitting that the evidence is strong and you don't want the legal risk of prosecution.

To be clear, paying someone (the victim) to drop the charges is not the action of an innocent person.

Lol

What about the part right above what you bolded where he says it was consensual?

Double lol at you using a statement written by the girls civil lawyers as some type of "proof" lol.

That's not what happened, but carry on.

Settled in a case he admitted she said "no" = rapist If you are rich, you get different rules most times.
He is a snitch, ask Shaq.

He was a damned awesome basketball player with the Jordan killer instincts. One of the greatest ever.

Lol call kobe a rapist when he gets convicted but until then I'll just assume you hate him because your salty for some reason. One of the best players ever and he deserves every bit of love and attention he's getting. It's a sad day from basketball.

P.S. I'm a LeBron fan but no one can deny his greatness.

I'll call him a rapist when he admits publicly that the victim did not see it as consensual and gives her a big pile of money. That's good enough for me.

You're delusional if you believe he read a statement written by the girls attorneys. He paid a lot of money for his own attorneys and if they let him do that, he over paid by every cent.

He can say it's concensual right up to the point where he now understands that she didn't. At that point, it's an admission of guilt. He should have never said he understands her point of view. If he believes her point of view, then he believes he's a rapist which he is.

The only thing he deserves more than his junk chopped off, is a prison cell.

Right or wrong is relative is this case. You are entitled to your opinion.

Clearly, that statement was crafted in a way that it satisfied KF and her attorneys, without Kobe admitting guilt. It was crafted in a way that he could put the incident behind him without legal repercussion.

If he were admitting to anything, the case wouldn't have been dropped. He would have gone to jail.

Not that I am a Lakers fan but I liked Kobe up until 2007 when he requested a trade from the Lakers. I just thought it demonstrated poor character to demand a trade from a franchise that had stood by him through all the tumult of the 2003/04 season. It was a real slap in the face of Jerry Buss who had Kobe's back through some very dark times.

He stuck around though.

I can't fathom how people are arguing against that statement. He flat out said that she didn't consent that night. No means no, but because his money has money he gets his way.

He cheated on his wife by raping another woman. He admitted that in that statement. Is he a great basketball player? Yes. Is he a bad person? I'd argue yes.

In regards to his "greatness," though- he nor any other athletes posses "greatness." Our soldiers, teachers, police, firemen, EMS, nurses, etc (but not politicians) possess "greatness." But in fairness, we may have different interpretations of the term.

You have to read between the lines. A lot came out about the instability of the girl, etc.

"How she feels" can be read as "she was crazy, and crazy people feel things are true that aren't true."

I'm not attacking the girl. Just trying to provide context for something that happened over a decade ago.

That statement was meticulously crafted to not admit guilt. Anyone who doesn't realize that is being incredibly foolish.
