It’s not like he made a one off comment on the bus trying to be funny. He put derogatory language in a professional email. He should be fired for the stupidity of doing that.

How many players do they keep in the league with domestic violence and drug charges while they’re firing someone for making comments about a grown man’s lips in 2011? I stopped caring about the nfl a few years ago and this is a big reason why.

They can search every work email I’ve ever sent and there wouldn’t be anything hateful or derogatory in there.
I can say with 100% certainty I have never discussed another man's lips via email nor have I espoused racist, homophobic, or misogynistic comments via email, much less work email.

That said, Gruden is an idiot and deserves to be fired or "forced to resign".
I'm no fan of the woke crowd, but I don't think this has anything to do with pandering to them. There were many emails over the course of 6 or 7 years, not just a single mistake. It shows his true character which is important for a public figure.
Jimmy the Greek was fired in the 80s for similar nasty comments before "woke" was even a thing. Gruden would have been gone for this in any era post-1975 IMO.

I don’t think it has much to do with woke crowd. He literally made racist comments about a NFLPA executive and survived. He resigned today after it came out he was passing pornography, insulting women refs, and calling the commissioner a slur (on top of the rest).
There’s not a job out there where anyone survives that string of bad decisions. Woke crowd or not.
And it probably didn’t help he roasted the commissioner of the NFL as well. Reports were the league was pressuring the raiders to fire him. A good rule of thumb is don’t piss off the guy who either directly or indirectly signs your paychecks.
This. Not everything is the woke crowd or Antifa's fault. Some people are just shitty, get exposed for said shittiness, and lose their jobs. Happens all the time.
Here is the one thing about this that stinks to high heaven for me. Companies have had software looking for key words in emails since well before 2011 that would get people fired. My boss got a call from HR about me around 2011 for something I put in an IM. My house got broken into and one of the things stolen was a gun. She was asking me what got stolen and I listed that among everything else. They never looked at context, just that the IM had the word gun in it. I got called out within 24 hours of sending that IM (nothing was done because once she explained context it was dismissed) I don't believe for a second that they didn't have the same software. If you sit on something for 10 years, you have an agenda. I'm not sure what there's was but they had one.

It wasn't an isolated incident. It shows who someone really is inside. Sadly, a man I loved for getting my Bucs their first Super Bowl title, is a POS. Being racist isn't cool, being homophobic isn't cool, nore is treating women like sh*t. I'm not woke, I just have a mixed daughter, gay loved ones and another daughter I don't want being treated like ass from some man. Welcome to America those bitching

Imagine trying to coach a locker room that features the first openly gay active NFL player (who is well liked) after using anti-gay slurs repeatedly.
I dislike Gruden as a coach after the BS with Bowden (among other things) but it's pretty disgusting how thrilled people are with him being brought down as the Raiders coach. I know theyre vultures that love a story and clicks, but it still makes me sick
Gruden's an ask. No question. If they didn't know that before someone illegally obtained his emails, they just didn't want to know.
The emails weren't illegally obtained. It is part of the NFL's investigation into the Washington Football Team. The NFL is the one that acquired and released the emails.
What’s funny is everyone so upset by this are probably the ones who stopped watching the basketball team because they kneeled for the anthem. Free speech unless it’s something you disagree with right?

Yep. I fired a guy a couple of years ago for being blatantly racist and homophobic on his work IM chatting with one of his buddies outside the company. We found out about it because the company software caught the racial slurs. We can't have people saying crap like that using company resources while representing the company.
That said, why he was exposed is not really the point. He did it and deserves what he gets.

It’s hypocritical to the highest order. It’s humorous to see. I’m not personally upset by Gruden but people have to know you can’t be doing that stuff on a work email.
I get it and I'm not defending John Gruden. My problem is that I'm sure they knew of it within seconds if not a day and it comes out 10 years later.
Reading the article it looks like this all came from the NFL ongoing investigating Washington’s issues. They weren’t targeting Gruden. I mean, it sorta begs the question what other dirt the NFL now has it’s hands on.

ESPN probably didn’t want to release it because it would’ve looked bad on them since he was employed there at the time.
