Jasper Johnson

Honest question, when was the last time a basketball recruit with strong athletic ties spurned UK for an out-of-state non-traditional power? If he goes to UNC, I get it. But Alabama beating out UK here would be the equivalent of Stoops beating out DeBoer for Robert Horry Jr., 5-star dual threat quarterback who grew up in Tuscaloosa.

Not sure, but Alabama making the final-4 is the equivalent of them making the football playoffs. Us winning zero post-season games is the equivalent of making the toilet bowl, and losing. Definitely didn't help.

Let's be honest, our fan base would go nuts if we landed Johnson. Pope needs this.

There's tons of emotional parachutes being made right now if Johnson pulls the Alabama or UNC hat.

If Pope lands this kid, it shows he can hang with the big boys. It's not a "must-get", but it's damn close in terms of showing that Pope has arrived as a recruiter.

Going out and beating Oats, Calipari, and Davis for a kid would be a huge deal.

It might help the perception of Pope to people who want one and dones.
I hope we never get another one, unless it's a total surprise.
JJ appears to be a high volume shooter, but not a high percentage maker.

One and dones aren't bad. Solely depending on them is bad.

Surround Johnson with legitimate veteran players and he'll be fine.

I have been following UK since Cotton Nash. I think the answer would be this would be the first.

they were the number 1 overall seed and lost in the s16

I'd love to be a 1 seed, and not lose to a 14 and 15 in the 1st round. Also, that 1 seed year, didn't they win the conference regular season and sec tournament?

not sure
i just know they underachieved as a number 1 overall seed
i am not a Oates fan
if fans hated how arrogant at times Cal was then they would really hate Oates and his attitude

I don't care how many Final Fours that Alabama makes. Their basketball team will always play 2nd fiddle to Alabama football. The Alabama fans are more concerned about who the 3rd string punter for their JV team is, than who a 5-Star basketball recruit named Jasper Johnson is.
So that’s basically most Div 1 Schools with an athletic director worth a crap.

I’m still stunned with this. Family is UK athletic royalty. Seems that Jasper would be jumping at the chance to play for UK rather than UK begging him to play for the top all time program.

If it’s all about 1 & done and how much nil maybe let him go. Might not bring the team first chemistry that UK is instituting. It’s a honor to be a homegrown Ky guy and get to play at UK. I would have thought he would have been like Perry, Sheppard, Moreno and Noah and couldn’t wait to put on that UK uniform.

Like to see him at UK but if he’s not all in for #9 do the Damien Harris thing but you won’t ever be fully celebrated in Ky.

Why in the world is Bama leading? Pope and Oats run similar stuff offensively. Johnson's getting shots in both systems. It's not like Oats is the second coming of Coach K.

What's the draw? Is it NIL?
A person would think that 99% of Alabama's NIL money goes to their football players. There couldn't be a lot left over for any other sport.

I'm very behind on all the recruiting info and news. But even if Johnson isn't a great "fit" or a high percentage shooter, I still think landing him makes a big wave. Just like Moreno did. Even though both are KY kids (which I'm sure helped Pope big time), it's still two top25ish kids for next year, and that's going to perk everyone's ears up. Pope, a fairly young coach who has a proven offense.. is now on UK with resources and no weird Mormon law hampering him.. can now recruit?! It will send a message for sure.

Also, LMFAO that ESPN still hasn't put UK's logo next to Moreno. That would never happen for Duke or UNC.

I’m not sure how you can sit in a room with Pope, listen to him, and still not want to play for him, especially at UK… in your hometown city.
The hometown city is always interesting to me. You wonder if a part of decisions of kids who leave their home city is because they want something new and different. I know I would not have wanted to go to college in my hometown.

I have been told Bama has thrown the bag at him along with recruiting him for sometime... Will be surprised if he picks UK.

I realize it's common sense but if Pope can have some success out of the gate I can see 4-5 starts start to pick back up in 2025-2026

Understandable. I never had the options JJ has so it’s easy for me to sit back and make a decision. He seems like he is a contrarian though. He has the opportunity to play in front of the bulk of his family all season and is likely headed 7 hours away.

Not sure how it will turn out but all parties involved will be OK. Would be nice for Pope to add back to back top 25 recruits for momentum and excitement.

I think Oats is a fine coach and he'll land his fair share of top prospects.

Under Pope, I don't think it's as threatening as it would be under Cal. Pope brings a different strategy and brand. I doubt we will be as dependent on landing 3 out of the like 20 freshman who are good in their first year. Oats isn't so directly taking from our player pool as he would with Cal as the coach here. Missing on a top freshman when the entire strategy is replacing the 4-7 that leave is quite painful.

This guy got a few things correct and blew up a bit and then got a lot wrong and got called out publicly by multiple people.

No idea if he really knows anything but -

I never expect intelligent decisions from 18 year olds.

Some kids just want to be different. I feel like if he was going to UK he'd wait to announce to see what the team looks like. If his primary goal is in fact to develop into a legit NBA player it's still kind of a weird choice. Pope doesn't have a track record of developing NBA players (his assistants do) but it's not like Nate Oats is John Calipari reincarnate. Winning coach with a fun system but who are his best guards that developed into NBA studs?

Mark Sears - x’fer, might be an All-American but limited NBA potential

Jaden Bradley - 5*, transferred after 1 year

Rylan Griffin - high 4*, transferred after 2 years

JD Davison - 5*, late 2nd round pick one and done, hasn’t done anything in NBA

Josh Primo - 5*, lottery pick but very weird/not successful NBA career thus far

Keon Ellis - JUCO guard, went undrafted but has played a bit in league

Jaden Shackelford - 3*, nice 2 year college career, undrafted and 0 NBA games played

Jahvon Quinerly - 5* HS guard transferred in, transferred back out. Probably an overseas guy

Football should get the lions share —anywhere for that matter (based on pure No of players, and that they are an SEC school)), but Alabama knows how to tap the keg for even some bball $$
