It’s Official, Coen to the Rams

The biggest suckety suck now is that we have to sit on here and ponder over the rumor mill for F"ING TWO WEEKS or longer because of the stupid state law of having to post the damn position for 10 days or whatever it is.
I get the reason for the rule, but this is one area where exceptions should be made. Depending on the timing, those 2-3 weeks can mean a ton for recruiting.

Still think Liam is gone, but Roush, Rowland, and Drummond are all (no idea what they're hearing) tentatively pumping the brakes and joking about Coen's departure in some form or fashion. Rationale I'm reading is that Rams really set the salary low.

Again, nothing official, and I still think he's gone, but maybe $1.1 million is worth another season or two in Lex.

We can still hope for round 2 for now.

I hope it will be another QB coach from the Rams tree. Almost has to be. We invested too much and saw alot of return on that investment.

I was high on Woodward getting the job but I think the better move is a QB coach/oc because 1) it fills the need. If we elevate Woodward we still need to hire a QB coach and prior to coen stoops hasn't knocked it out of the park there 2) we owe it to Levis. He returned thinking coen would return. He needs a plug and play situation here; not to relearn everything
Woodward actually is a QB coach. He played the position and was always coaching that position while he was with Whipple. Wasn’t until he got to Kentucky I believe that he started coaching WRs. I could be wrong and missed a spot but he’s a QB coach first and foremost.

I just can't imagine the Rams or anybody else matching $1.1M/year for somebody who doesn't call plays. I know pro salaries are crazy but I don't see that.

Again, do we know if or will UK make a counteroffer?

WHATTTTT???!!

Idc if it’s the HC job, if Coen leaves I’m gonna be flaming hot pissed, and I imagine so will a lot of players in Blue. We’ll be “fine”, but we’ll lose some guys, and our ceiling next year won’t be as high. Which fn sucks because we’re so close to knocking that door down, but we just keep getting hit with bs like injuries and coaches, and have zero QBs on the roster, etc etc. We finally got all the pieces, and now we can’t have fn nothin, man.

It sucks we have to bring in another coordinator but I don’t think Coen was doing anything extraordinary as a playcaller here. We were a little more balanced but we had an upgrade at QB from Wilson and Robinson bailed us out a lot of bad situations. I agree, we need to bring someone in with a similar philosophy to continue the momentum of recruiting.
I’m guessing Coen has aspirations of being a NFL head coach. McVay calls the plays. It’s not like Coen gets to be a playcaller as OC
Just don’t agree with this. The play calling was drastically better. Yes Wandale made some big plays and we upgraded QB. But all the receivers and TEs had more space to work. We had play design that made sense and worked to exploit defensive concepts and create gaps. Use one route to pull a defender and create a pocket in the D.

That was my biggest gripe w the Gran era when we threw. No we didn’t have a big time one on one receiver but the play design never helped create openings. It was all “go beat your man”

My hope is that we just grab the Rams or Bengals WR or QB coach again and keep the system.

While Gran is not a "Air Raid" Disciple per say his passing game pre-UK was mainly predicated on the Leach Air Raid Spread offense. That offense is all about Pre-snap reads and finding the open space in the Defense. The McVay and the Coen Offense is about Scheming your best players open. Diagnosing the defense and creating ways to get your best players the ball. Coen tailored our offense to the defense every week. Go back and watch the drive we scored against Georgia in the first half. That was the most creative drive to get our best players the ball against a defense that was all-world.

You can take away the Air Raid, you can't take away the McVay system because it is constantly evolving. Its much harder to do but its far superior to anything else we've ever run here.

Don’t sleep on Darin Hinshaw coming back

Stoops isn't a idiot. Hinshaw would be a good go get my coffee guy..... maybe he's a decent at coaching other positions but a QB coach he is not, and you can't give him benefit of the doubt because he was beyond horrible at his last job.

His scheme was light years better than anything we had previously. And it’s not unfair. We didn’t have the QB and WRs because we sucked at recruiting them and developing them That falls on the coach.
this system is a pro set. Joker ran a pro set back in 06 through 10 and ran it well. It would be worth giving Joker a call on this. Let him run the offense and with the Big Dog recruiting we can keep this going.

It’s called business. Coaches want top dollar. Players now want top dollar. When you hire people that other people want then you are making the right pick. That’s just bug time football.

Ok, so who's on the list to replace him?
One name that's been mentioned is Bengals WR coach Troy Walters, don't know if anything's there or that's speculation. Would UK bump Woodward to OC and hire a WR coach such as Walters?

Rowland did reply to his own tweet with

*maybe looking

I'm of the opinion that we will have a new oc.

Hopefully it works our for Liam, but the Rams will not be a long term dynasty. They sold the next decade for a win now mindset.. this year...maybe year after will be the end of the "now"

WR coach from an NFL team is not going to come here to be a WR coach unless he’s also a coordinator.

We either bump our WR coach to OC, since he was Coen’s right hand man, and bring in a GOOD QB coach, or we bring in a guy who can develop the QB and keep that train rolling.
Coen knew what he was doing. You could see HUGE improvements in Coen from game 1 to the bowl game. We need to continue those improvements. Can’t stop that.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but Mullen is a better college OC than Coen. Hell it was only Coens first year and there were some growing pains. Everyone seems to forget Chattanooga and Miss State abominations not to mention South Carolina offensive performance.

It’s not like he’s perfect but Coen was definitely improving, almost learning as he goes and it was excellent by the end of the year. However Mullen is more proven and I’d say definitely knows more about college offenses considering he’s been at it for decades

Wish there was a game where they went head to head so we could know for sure who was better.

You could say that although I’d say our defense and special teams won us the game. I don’t think Mullen is a great program leader at all but if he gets to just coach offense he is more than proven.

Coen has a brighter future obviously but if we are just talking college OCs I’d take Mullen and go with it just fine

Mullen's name has been tossed around this board a lot as a replacement. I'd wager his ego and personality in general make him a locker room cancer. Would be EXTREMELY disappointed if he was our next OC. To me, he doesn't seem to fit in with the system and mentality Stoops has fostered. Players would go to war for Gran or Mark, Brad, Big Dawg, Schlarman... Mullen is a see you next Tuesday kinda fella. Like Spurrier without the results.

Stoops already has his replacement in house...thankfully.

Come on man...

You seriously think any of his offenses were at the point we reached this past season? I get it, he is a good guy who is loyal to Stoops. Sometimes that's not enough. The guy had the job, and we make a staggering advancement once he leaves? Pass...

UK is better off. Find someone who wants to be part of the Cats rise as opposed to someone biding his time.

I agree its too soon if he took one of the other 31 OC spots in the NFL, but the Rams are a perfect fit for a couple reasons: First, and most obvious, is the scheme. Coen brought the Rams playbook with him to Lexington so he's a perfect fit. Second, and something that's been overlooked, is although Coen will be the OC, McVay will still call the plays. Always been that way with him, so I think the OC position with the Rams doesn't have near the pressure of the other 31 teams

Good point. Didn't realize that McVey exclusively called the plays.

But it's a virtual lock he'll be a head coach next season.

It won't be Mullen. We won't be changing the offense. I suspect Stoops already has his guy.
