Cal usually and I dont think ever has missed or missed judged any of his star recruits in each years class. Is it just early or could Skal be Cal's first time be miss as far as an over rated recruit. Your thoughts or opinions. I am hoping its just early but Skals play is just lil concerning imo.

He's only a miss if we keep playing him with his back to the basket. It's not going to work with him. He needs to be setting screens, rolling to the basket, etc. He does not have the strength to transform quickly like Towns did. He's also not quick enough when people that he can't see are converging from behind. He needs to see what hand he's dealt. BUT, Cal knows best and I won't be surprised at all if he's a beast later in the season with his back to the basket.

He has the tools to be a big time player. His play has been frustrating to watch, mainly bc you can see the talent is there but the execution hasn't caught up yet. Cal is going have to break the mold of making him a back to the basket type of player. He's just going get manhandled like that, and I just don't see him improving in that area drastically in just a few months. Cal is going to need to play to his strength. Skal doesn't have the body like Towns where he can force him to be a post up player, it's just not going work. Skals shoot is very smooth, just need to figure out how to get him rolling in the offense.

Geez......take a calming breath.....If he's a miss then every D-1 coach in the county would have missed.

Did you miss our NIT year? Now those guys were misses. Way too early to call these guys misses.

The only thing about Skal that is really concerning to me is his lack of rebounding. He has 31 rebounds for the year. Tyler Ulis has 25. Skal has 6 more rebounds than Ulis at this point! How is that even possible?

He'll only be a miss if Cal does with him like other coaches tend to do, and not play him to his strengths.

The problem is, Lee proved we are really thin up front. We may need Skal to shoulder some of the load, and he's not meant to hang out under the basket..

Wasn't calling Noel a miss. Archie was a miss. He was mediocre at best when he was at UK.

Archie did what he had to do. No one else creating offence forced his play. Now, he had issues, but it's not like that class had lots of talent. Cal took the best out there and tried to make it work. I wouldn't call it a miss.

Yeah, I mean I get your point. He was just a big reason why that team was bad. He never saw a shot he didn't like. He played very selfishly IMO. He was pretty talented but he didn't live up to his ranking at all. He's probably the only recruit I'd say Cal has missed on. It happens, not every recruit is gonna be a super star.

Goodwin would have been much better if Kentucky had a competent point guard and literally any other scoring threat that wasn't softer than a bag of marshmallows in Kyle Wiltjer

This.

screwduke - love the username by the way - I get your point, and I guess I can agree that he was selfish for sure. And definitely shot the ball everytime he touched it. So maybe we can call him a miss; but I'd say he wouldn't have been such a miss in a better circumstance.

Cal's not the one promoting that he would be a top pick in the draft next year. So somebody else saw the talent too. He seems completely confused on what his role is right now. Cal will have to figure out what buttons to push with this kid.

Lol. Yeah, Nerlens and Archie, playing now in the league, were misses.

This is exactly the mentality of fans on this board. We judge our player's time here at UK by what they are doing in the NBA. Since Archie made the NBA then he had to have been good at UK. Meanwhile he drove like a mad man out of control to the basket and led our team to a first round NIT loss. Don't give a damn if he becomes an NBA hall of famer, he did squat for us.

Just because Archie didn't hit his peak of maturity 6 months after graduating from High School does NOT make Archie a miss, does it?

yeah, other than play his ass off every game of his career.

Skal will be a beast by March. I think some of you forget who is coaching this team.

I wouldn't even know where to begin if I were to seriously attempt to answer the op.
It is way too early too call Skal a miss. I also think he has had several players come that weren't nearly as good as he thought. I love Alex, but I am sure Cal thought he was better. I am also sure that he thought Wiltjer would fit his system better than he did. I would not want any other coach than Cal, but he makes the mistakes recruiting and coaching just like any other coach.
