In game adjustments…

That seemed to me to be player initiated. Pope did not call time out. He certainly used TV and Minn ST's time outs but again, it seemed to be the players knew what to do. Love the way Oweh plays.

Obviously this is going to be a much better coaching experience, on all fronts, than what we had with Cal. But it's also worth noting that this team has far more experience than any roster Cal had, and that makes a difference. Having a team full of freshman, there's gonna be a lot of mistakes.

Someone last night made the joke "We haven't stepped out of bounds yet", which was depressingly funny.. But it also made me think "That's more of an inexperienced player problem". Those guys probably spent most of their highschool games never getting calls for something like that.

Its nice to have a change at coach, but it's also just as nice to not be having to watch a lack of basic fundamentals from young players.

Alex Poythress was not a freshman when he kept stepping out of bounds time and time again.

I know you already know this, but that was his own design, his own choice. His ego wanted to prove to everyone he could win with freshmen while pursuing his true goal - getting a bunch of kids drafted in the first round.

So, you're trying to cherry pick one outlier to poo poo an otherwise good observation and post?

And I agree with the above post... I believe you're thinking of Briscoe.
I remember Poythress having issues with that as well. I do not remember whether it was as a freshman or not. What I really remember was how his injury completely changed the dynamic for us. 😬

I don’t remember poythress doing that, you sure you’re not thinking of Isaiah briscoe?
Nope. Poy would step on the baseline every time he would drive to the basket from the corner. It use to make me so mad. There was someone else that would always have a foot out of bounds when catching a ball behind the 3 pt line.

I don’t remember that from poy at all, I do remember briscoe doing that every single game multiple times a game it was really aggravating lol. I seem to remember a player always catching it out of bounds too but can’t recall who it is either, wasn’t Brandon Boston was it?

Thiero did it a few times as have others during the last few years so this problem did not go away with Briscoe

I don’t know who made the call to start taking it inside, but that was the key adjustment.

It was 17-18 and we had missed like a zillion 3’s in a row when Butler drove it down their throats for an easy layup. Then I think Oweh did the next possession. After that it was all over for them.

I knew exactly what we needed to do, so it obviously doesn’t take a genius to figure out that when you face a team that is smaller and less athletic you take them inside.

But it is nice to have a coach that can make the simple adjustments, or to have players smart enough to do it themselves. However it happened, it was a nice change.

Once this team gets comfortable playing in front of a crowd together, watch out. It will be threes and layups all night long baby.

Did you guys see Pope's press conference after the game? He talked about how when you play the game the right way it will reward you. They weren't in the first half and that was the reason nothing was falling. They began to play it the right way and were rewarded with more shots falling. Also implied that he wanted them to work through that on their own if I recall correctly.
