Hurley to Lakers?

I honestly think the last college coach to make the jump might have been Donovan. I’m trying to think of anyone else since him. It is not common at all anymore and teams seem to only go for the best when it does happen.

EDIT - poster reminded me of Brad Stevens. So since 2013 is it Stevens and Donovan?

John Beilein is most recent that I remember. That didn't even last a full season

I heard mention of there being extra hurdles when Hurley turned down the UK job. Was the potential of this job being discussed in the background?

I would be surprised if he goes, but it is the Lakers.

You might be right but I'm always entertained when people make definitive statements like these. As if you can read the person's mind and predict the future. You'd think people would avoid doing that after seeing all of the "Cal ain't going to Arkansas lol" posts.
I agree with your statement for sure... I'm just saying he isn't going anywhere do to his wife... She don't play.. Money is Money and he may jump but also seems like a northeast dude with a northeast wife.... I know how mine rolls but I just make big stickers for a living.

If he did go, which UConn player potentially transferring, could help us the most, if they came here?

Fair enough!

Probably Karaban in a dream world, but realistically I doubt either him or Carr wants to come off the bench, so it probably wouldn’t work out. I’m actually not sure we’d be looking at any of them for similar reasons. Only one scholarship left, and we seem pretty set at this point as far as who we expect our rotation to be.

Hurley grew up a Knicks fan. If I'm him, I'm waiting another season to see what happens with that job. If Thibs runs those guys into the ground another year and they're burnt out by playoffs - that job will probably open up and he'll have a much better roster/management situation.

Lakers have LeBron and AD and prestige but it's a poorly built roster with a GM/Owner that has caught some recent flack. They've also scapegoated the last few coaches.

Hurley cares a lot about legacy and he knows having a shot at the first 3 peat in 50+ years would be big.

I’d say his agent is getting his name out that’s he’s interested in the NBA. He’ll try to get a 3 peat at UConn then try to get an NBA job in the northeast after the season is over.

One positive about the Lakers is they have reinvented themselves multiple times bc they can get the best free agents in that era (Shaq and Lebron). Since the merger, they have played in the championship game in every decade and won a title in every decade but the 90’s.

The Knicks have been a crap franchise. They have 1 divisional title in the last 30 years and 1 conference title in the last 30 years.

For all you people saying you would be "shocked"...I don't know what world you are living in.

He's in small CT town coaching in a crap conference, yes he can make a 3-peat but he's already cemented himself as a HOF caliber coach. Time to strike when iron is hot and take one of the most prestigious jobs in all of sports (arguably THE most prestigious in all of basketball). Ask Cal how quickly things can change and that NBA window shuts down forever.

It's insane to say but now there is more consistency on NBA rosters than college so that headache goes away.

Logically its the right move, he can always come back to any college job he wants. I'd be shocked if he didn't take it.

Hey guys, guys, listen to me. Did y’all hear what I said, wasn’t it funny…huh, wasn’t it? Mom…mom…mom let me tell you what I told everybody, it was so funny…

Spoiler: It’s not though…

This may add smoke to the fire, per The Athletic:

Hurley signed a six-year, $32.1 million contract with UConn in 2023, after the first of the back-to-back titles. The contract includes a separate, heavily reduced buyout if Hurley leaves for an NBA head-coaching position — $1.875 million, versus a $7.5 million buyout if he leaves for a college head-coaching job.

Seems like an odd choice for Lebron.

Media is selling this is “the Lakers want a coach BEYOND Lebron James”

Well, Lebron is still there, and Danny might not last as long as Lebron does in LA.

things stick out that makes me believe he takes the Lakers job.
1. He posted a picture on X of him in a fetal position with the caption "transfer portal" or something to that affect. Coaches do not want to try and deal with coaching and doing fundraisers for portal money. Especially somewhere like UCONN who doesn't have big conference revenue sharing. WOJ said they will have about 4-5 million annually for NIL. He said not near enough to compete.
2. The "mega, long term contract being offered". Security and long term, they are committed to giving him time to put in his system. Key is the front office has to be in constant communication with Hurley, and he has to have roster input. If they Lakers give him that, he is GONE.

90% chance he takes the job, IMO.

Lebron stated to the Lakers front office, "Hire a coach beyond Lebron James 1 or 2 years, hire for the future." He is fine, as he knows his time is almost up and he wants to live in LA after his career comes to a end. Not to mention, he is a BIG fan of Hurley. The roster will have to be overhauled sooner than later, might as well hire a high reward coach who is known for his roster building.

He gone.

You figure if he goes, would say 60/40 he goes, with the timing, you would think UCONN would probably promote from within to try and keep the team together. They would not want to try and rebuild a roster after first of June (like Pope just did). Not as many choices, not enough time.

Now maybe someone board or AD would say, hey we have won 2 in a row, lets go after coach x,y or z and tell them get what you can and we will get ready for year 2.

If they go after a coach, who would it be?
Pitino
Cal
Barnes
Oats
Drew

What say you?

Comments I read from Hurley just now makes it sound like he could be gone. Talked about how his current job consumes his whole life. He said almost no social life or family life. Also, the NIL thing is bearing on him. Article said the NIL thing will just get worse at a place like UConn. All that hype he gave McNeely about winning a third championship and now he may be gone. McNeely should have chosen the sure thing playing here in this offense and in front of the best fans in the world. Wouldn't have had to worry about his coach leaving.

Please please please let this happen.

I also think this is the Lakers planning got life after Lebron. If they lose lebron, they still have Hurley for the future, and who knows, he might be a fantastic head coach who the Lakers would have for like 20 years.

Whether it's funny or not depends on your perspective. You obviously don't find it amusing.
Don't be concerned though. Neither the lakers or Uconn would be interested in your coach.

The Arkansas administration is the only one dumb enough in the country( college and NBA) to hire a washed up used car salesman who can't make it past Oakland with two top 10 draft picks.
