Unsurprisingly that not true. It’s more like 14th in gold and 16 total when you don’t count basketball as 3 separate golds.

Is there any truth to the old legend that when Coach Rupp coached the US Olympic team - the Soviet team / agents / scouts -- stole his playbook?

I really hope it's true. - and not JUST because i mindlessly repeated said rumor to about 150 ppl over a few years

It just makes sense -

For all I know Coach Rupp probably didn't even HAVE a playbook with him?

Seems like that wouldn't be a thing - ?
Basketball is a lot simpler than football when it comes to formations plays and sets

Cricket looks like a sport that drinking buddies made up with whatever items they could find behind their barns and farms -

And curling still amazes me that ppl -- watch it and "do it" --->> that was DEFINITELY something that ppl who were snowed in and suffering fm cabin fever invented

I have a %#%^!!*% yellow jacket nest in my backyard - I HATE those little guys...and they're a genuine phobia

Would everyone pretty much agree that you pour gasoline down the hole in the ground under a cover pr darkness -- that's progress the best approach right?

Freaking eh, CatsFans - you can call me crazy or cuss my name pr whatever - I DONT CARE - i 100% believe our biggest chance for a football upset this year is :

At Texas, Mo-Fo's!

F-them -- can't BELIEVE they are moving into the conference

Daughter starting her junior year at UK next week - moved her into an apartment down near Rupp - closer to Goodfellas though -- I should probably remember the streets

Yall know about the Good Sam hospital wing with the mental patients - and how they get released and go score "The Drugs" and use their pict (sp?) line as the means of administration?

Lady at work said you can apparently get "any drug you want" --- at or near that Caseys convenience store across fm B Chandler

That Shit cant be real -

Anywho ...My future son in law is here ...I should go and think of fatherly stances to take and wise things to pass along

Weather is starting to tease us isn't it?

hope we're done with the hell-and-a-half temps now anyway

It’s extremely impressive that’s why there’s no reason to juice the stats making people question it.
You are exactly zero fun

I was going on the fly on a national radio show. Shit happens. It’s still a fairly amazing accomplishment

But thank you for fact checking me in real time. Everyone loves those people

I don't think the US played the Soviets at the 1948 Olympics so I don't know that Rupp had a playbook stolen . I'm not sure Rupp was considered the head coach either. One of the UK books I read years ago said the team was made up of two teams the Fabulous Five and the AAU barnstorming Phillips 66 Oilers who had beaten UK at the Olympic Trials. The details are a little hazy but I think basically one would play one half and switch to the other team for the other half during the Olympics. In the gold medal game, the Oilers played the first half against France and the US was clinging to like a 19-15 or 20-15 halftime lead. The Cats came in for the second half and beat the living $hit out of France to a final score of 65-21 and the gold medal.

You know that Aussie break dancing chick, Raygun? If you only watched her clips you'd think she embarrassed herself and the Olympics. Fact of the matter is, that "sport", at least on the women's side, is a total train wreck. I've seen better dancing at a middle school mixer than the women's gold medal match. So yeah, Raygun was bad. But in the context of the entire sport she wasn't that terrible.

Hey Matt - can't remember if I asked you before
Wes Blondell fm Middlesboro was my HS best friends' step father -

Would he have been related to you & yours?

PS - not sure if you've had Ike's wings in M'Boro - they're pretty freaking good

FWIW - have a pleasant Monday air-bodah

The book I read said the University of Kentucky's Fabulous Five won the 1948 Olympic Gold Medal in basketball, and that's the only book worth reading.

Would Rupp have ever been an assistant with other Oly-Teams?

Prob not right?
Fm what little I know of him I doubt he would have been anyone's assistant

So - i can squarely check that one off as more legend than not -- OR someone once lied about the whole thing and i just swallowed it like sweet honey nectar

I've never been comfortable with how the Olympics does the medal count so here's my proposed way of scoring it going forward. This would also make Jones's take on the radio correct so do with that what you want.
  • One medal for individual and two-person events.
    • Nobody really gives a shit about doubles anything outside of the Olympics, so we're not about to award people who win the doubles the equivalent of two medals just because there are two people.
  • Two medals for all relay-related events (track, swimming, etc.).
  • Three medals for all non-judged team events and gymnastics.
    • Basically all team events except synchronized swimming. That gets a half of medal for being stupid.

That chick has a PhD in breaking and teaches classes on it at her university 😂

4 for his last 21 w/ 14 K's
3 K's in each of the last 3 games and 4 of the last 5 games
1 for his last 12 w 9 K's

Is that good?

For all of the screaming and hype when he has 2 good games in a row, the usual suspects turn into sheep when he reverts back to typical Elly.

Our football CATS play 3 of the top 6 and 4 of the top 15 in AP Poll, so if we make it to the playoffs we will have earned it!!!

The book I read said the University of Kentucky's Fabulous Five won the 1948 Olympic Gold Medal in basketball, and that's the only book worth reading.

Currently reading "The City Game" by Matthew Goodman about this scrappy City College of New York's basketball team winning the NIT and NCAA championships in '49-'50 (the first and only double champion I believe) and subsequent arrest of their starting five for point shaving. There's a decent amount UK stuff in there that I was completely unaware of.

The most interesting UK related stuff for me was in the '49-'50 NIT tournament with UK going up to Madison Square Garden to play CCNY. Back in those days, professional basketball was sort of the opening appetizer with low attendance and little fanfare, with college ball the big ticket that would sell out the Garden. CCNY was a team made up of Jewish and African Americans and was a huge underdog going into the tournament and barely even squeaked in to begin with. Even during warmups, UK was described as some finely-tuned orchestra or a well-oiled Roman legion preparing for war, whereas CCNY was just this unorganized, sloppy shootaround session and the hometown crowd wasn't giving their team a realistic chance.

Right before opening tip during the customary handshakes between players on the court, the Kentucky players turned away and refused to shake the hands of the three black players on the court for CCNY. The 18K+ fans in the crowd went apoplectic and CCNY played the game of their lives, just obliterating Kentucky. The Cats were down 25 at halftime and it ended up being the worst loss of Rupp's career at 89-50. In the closing minutes, the crowd starting belting out "My Old Kentucky Home" (which, how amazing would that be as a taunt? imagine getting that treatment on the road in the SEC). Just interesting history to me, especially for a time in basketball history I don't know much about.

I've seen a lot of projections with us winning 8-10 games including an upset win. I haven't seen anyone pick us to win at Ole Miss though. I think they're the most vulnerable of the potential upsets. That roster is very portal heavy.

I won't pick us to beat Heupel's UT until Brad White shows us he can slow down that offense. This would be the team to do it with. It's Brad's best defensive roster ever as a DC.

If you think our schedule is tough, check out Oklahoma's. The SEC is hazing them with that slate. Florida's is right there with them, plus Miami and FSU OOC.

This weather, dang. Enjoyed some bourbon and Hard Knocks on the back porch Saturday night. Like 65 out. Ready for it.

Any GYERO kids play tackle football? Kid is interested, but we're committed to fall baseball already. Maybe next year. I don't know what to expect though. Never played football as a kid.

- Stick with baseball.

- Watched the Pete Rose doc that’s kind of old now, but it’s still an eye opener.

I never realized the support that guy had from the players of his era. The current commish is putting it on the Hall and the Hall is blaming the commish.

Put the man in as a player, it’s a no brainer!

- Cubs are now only 3 games out of a wild card. Paredes hitting after his adjustment to the trade and Steele is finally healthy and looking like the ace he is.

Cleveland this week could be tough.

- Caught 2 teenagers smoking pot in house that’s under construction. Neighborhood kids obviously but kind of irritating as all I can really do is run them off.

- I bought a 1973 Rare Antique bottle over the weekend that dates back to the old Frankfort distillery. Now know as Buffalo Trace.

Having fun trying to do research on to determine whether I keep it or open it.

- For me yes Ole Miss is the most obvious for an upset pick on our schedule, but it’s Texas. They are always susceptible to playing average in games that aren’t big prime time games.

If we catch them overlooking us then we could easily stun them.

The Rose issue was never exactly one-sided. He always said he wanted back in baseball which was never going to happen because he wanted to make that money. Pete was always about the money. As time went on, he was never getting back in game, so getting in HOF was more important and about making money off of being HOF'r Pete Rose. I say let him in after he dies. It's best of both worlds. He goes where he deserves and can't personally profit. While we're at it, do a special HOF, letting him Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello and whoever else is inexplicably left out.

For those who say he never bet against them, so what? Did he pitch a guy too long, pitch a guy too short and burn through his bullpen? He was not playing the long game if he is betting day-to-day.
