Cal's argument that this assembled group didn't make 3's last night really misses the larger point that everyone's making, which is that (1) he obviously doesn't even want us shooting them and (2) when he gets a recruit with that skill set, he actively discourages their use of the 3pt shot and/or sits them in favor of a more highly touted athletic recruit that can't shoot as well.

This year's team is merely the symptom of a larger problem that he's not going to acknowledge.

I think we all became even more aware of what was possible last night with a guy like Oats. Brash, lot of swagger, fun and innovative style of basketball. Seems hungry as hell to stake his claim. What's most dangerous for Cal and Barnhart is that he's attainable.

The fanbase's lust for Donovan when he was winning titles pushed Tubby over the edge IMO. Oats hasn't achieved anything yet, granted, but this is a style of basketball that's winning across all levels. We all know it. That's clearly where we are now. After last night UK and Barnhart officially have a situation on their hands because Cal's not capable of being gracious like Tubby was and the fanbase isn't going to just let it go.

I'm trying to read that quote from Cal and pretend it was him being asked at halftime. You went into the locker room down 12, didn't make a single GD adjustment and thought trading more 2's for 3's would erase a deficit.

UK didn't fail to do shit. You failed to recognize going into the post didn't work the 1st half, doubled down in the 2nd and now you want to deflect the blame to 'UK'.

The math doesn't work. Bama would have had to have just stopped playing basketball for about 8-10 possessions while we commit zero TO's and converted everything to points. What TF did he see in the 1st half that would give you any indication that was more than a 1% chance of happening?

Get someone on your staff that can do basic math or just pack your shit and leave peacefully. We don't need this to get ugly. Fix it or FO.

I turned it off when we were down 14 in the second and went to bed. And I just didn't care that Alafingbama was pushing our ish in at home.

Foreign, awful feeling, and I blame Cal 100000%. That stubborn ass is digging a grave he can't escape with the fanbase, and for a time I thought he was just sheltered from it...but now I have to think he just doesn't care. I have transitioned from hating this team to feeling awful for these players being trapped with a hollering maniac on the sidelines who believes it is the year of our Lord 1995.

Been applying analytics to pick up basketball since the early 90s...I mean 2 is definitely more than 1. I’ve seen many many many many games that ended with 6 2s for 12. This really isn’t a hard concept. In fact, you’re pretty much an idiot for shooting anything but 2s in a pickup game unless it’s a wide open layup.

You can win in today’s game by pounding it inside. To players like Cousins, Davis, and Towns. Been awhile since we had an interior player of that caliber.
True, but you also had some sharp shooters on those teams as well. It can't be all inside game, or that just won't work.

In fact, if it's an all-or-nothing in terms of style of play, it's clear which philosophy is dominant these days.

I’m not even asking us to be Villanova. You don’t have to hike up 35 threes a game, BUT you do have to utilize the stripe and when you have a sniper (Booker, Murray, Monk, Herro, Quick, Allen), he needs to take 8-9 a game.

The post up is inefficient and our guys suck in the post. Jackson is a garbage man and Sarr is a pick-and-pop who should be taking 3s himself.

And it’s not just offense. Playing multiple bigs kills you against teams these days off the bounce.

It’s insanity and plain to see.

Yeah, but I tend to think that if we're including the reality of the G-League, overseas, Duke as a one-and-done program, and teams outright paying players in the idea of "Today's Game" the odds of us seeing another Cousins, Davis, or Towns seems pretty remote.

I watch the Warriors almost every single game. And their drive hard kick out approach to passing makes so much sense...and wouldn't be hard for Cal to adopt. It's basically Dribble Drive Kick. Spot shooters in the corners...impossible to guard. The 2012 team was deadly because Lamb absolutely owned the baseline and corner shots. You can't guard it. Even back to 1996 with Delk. Best shot in basketball.

BBddk. Basketball Dribble Drive Kick.

I can't remember the last time we ran a play like that.

Even Garza has an army of talented shooters around him.

No one is saying you can't have a BIG.

You just can't 2-3 on the floor at the same time anymore and be successful (especially against similar schemes that Bama runs).

And it's sad/criminal that our HOF coach refuses to adapt to it -- and actually doubles down in spite of it.

The extended minute 2nd half lineup of Toppin/Jackson/Sarr was a huge EFF YOU to all of us. I'm 100% convinced that was specifically a coach sending a message to his boss and the fans -- that it's his ship and he'll go down with it -- his way.

So disheartening. But what can you do at this point?

- Years ago, if you had asked me what I liked about Calipari, one of my responses would have been his ability to adapt on the fly and adopt a play style that fits his roster / current norms. Now, his refusal to do so is his most glaring weakness. I hope I don't age so poorly.

- Really enjoying griddle cooking. Its got a certain "easy-mode" to it. Amazing how many "copycat" recipes are out there. My next project is to perfect the Frisco breakfast sandwich on this thing.

- Still haven't received my TrumBux stimmie. Been eyeing down my next ~$600 purchase though, because I'm a patriot.

- Gun dudes: been really thinking of pulling the trigger LOL on the Ruger Mark IV Hunter. A beautiful pistol, and I just want to learn to shoot a little. Not interested in conceal and carry... just a hobby / learning type thing. Suggestions welcome.

- Wasabi peas are my go-to desk snack. Hurt so good.

- 3 is at least 50% more that 2. I think.

- Wyvern is the only eccentric, on the fringe poster that I truly enjoy. The rest just seem like "look-at-me" knockoffs. Wy just seems authentic and is seasoned appropriately. I get the appeal of the Turnips to some of you, but it just annoys me TBH.

-Had a few good snows (including Christmas) in my neck of the woods. We can shut it down now... I'll see you in March #NIT

To put our situation into an actual real world scenario- The Barden Bellas used to be THE top program on the college a cappella circuit. But the groups leader refused to update their catalog, and eventually puked on herself in embarrassment bc she kept putting her group out their to sing an old Ace of Base song. Finally Becca came along with a fresh outlook but was still met with resistance. It wasn’t until Aubrey realized how out of touch she was that the group adapted and would later flourish.

When he went small in the Florida game I thought maybe he had a realization. Boy was I fooled.

“There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Ten years ago, all my non-UK fan buddies said we shouldn't hire Cal. That his success was built upon shady recruiting deals. That he was a huckster. That he was full of shit and would leave the program worse than he found it. But right away, what he put in worked. And that made some of the more obnoxious parts of his personality easier to overlook. But then his ego took over. And stupid things, which shouldn't be an issue, became an issue. And now he's too stubborn to realize that if he would some simple adjustments and keep his mouth shut he'd be more successful. But no, and here we are. In complete free-fall. The good news is, it can't get any worse. And there is only one way to go and that's up for Trump, I mean Cal. Oh wait, it can get worse, and it probably will.

I bet over 75% of our turnovers were directly related to our half-assed attempts at establishing a post presence.

Either from poor/lazy passes, bad angles, walks, offensive fouls, not holding seal long enough, etc...

I mean, there's something to be said for quickly coming down and jacking -- you take a lot less bullshit out of the equation. Hard for young Devin Askew to muck it up when all you're asking him to do is read/react.

It's a simple game. But here we are.

I think Dwayne Peavy & KP leaving has left Cal doing stuff he hates... or thinks he’s above...leaving a vacuum of player development and outreach.

Cal created/regressed a roster of bums, amassed a staff of non-NBA types, and now is directly under the auspices of TopButton Milquetoast. Plus Covid, plus an upcoming schedule of a Ls. Cal has to be miserable.

If you see the Lee jeans or Huggins-gear broken out again- you’ll know the grind is real and he’s in punt formation.

Rack this.

For an offense singularly designed to feed the post, we're inexplicably bad at it. It's hard to imagine we drill during practices if we can't regularly complete a basic f*cking post entry pass.

Smart fan saw this in 2018 after the K-State loss. The writing was on the wall

I disagree. I thought that team had personnel flaws. What made me concerned was in 2018-2019, we looked like the Golden State Warriors during those exhibition games when Cal was sitting in the stands. Then he came back to coaching and we looked like crap. I'd also argue that peak Cal was the 38-1 team's UCLA game, and his coaching made them worse from that moment on.

The good thing is when we do get it down there it's basically an auto bucket with Sarr, Jackson and Toppin's vast array of post moves.

“There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.”

So, is it time to say " fool me three times,*uck the peace sign, load the chopper and let it rain on Cal ?"

Turned the game off when we got stuck at 22 points for like 7 minutes. Told my son, "Eff this, I am done, will not watch another play." I kept my promise. Not sure shooting more 3's would help, you can take them all you want, making them is what is important. The Ole having a lot of shooters, just not any makers. The one thing I can say is, you have to change SOMETHING. This is not working, do something different. More pace, trap, and press. Like Askew and Allen said, Bama played a ballers game. Well these kids would be a lot more comfortable playing AAU / pick up game style. Not like it would get any worse in doing so. Plus the kids would be in a hell of a lot better comfort zone playing a style they are familiar and better playing at.

My lineup :
Askew
Mintz
Allen
Brooks
Jackson

Offense :
Run, attack, and spread it out on offense, either drive and shoot it, or pass it out for the shooter on the outside. Have Jackson clean up the misses, others crash the boards, except the 2 players that are furthest back. They get back on defense preventing the break the other way.
When Sarr is in the game, have him play face up game, pick and pop, if they know how to set screens / picks. But the biggest problem in running this, we do not have the elite, athletic PG than has the speed / handles to get around his man and penetrate. But you at least have to try it.

Defense :
Press, at least some until half court (Not a full press the whole time). Then trap and double team in the half court. Use the length you have to deflect balls. Cal use to chart deflections before he got too lazy to do it. By doing this, it creates more of a Helter / Skelter, confusing defense that would hide the players man defense issues and prevent them from getting beat off the dribble giving up lay ups / easy, wide open shots. Creating a few TO's and getting easy transition scores would be a huge confidence builder. More fun, up-tempo, but they also have to understand that doing this, you have to play all out 100% the whole time you are on the floor. Sub out at every media timeout. 4 minutes, give it all you got, rotate in and out when someone is gassed. Sounds simple and kind of dumb, but trying to score in the post over double teams and clogging the lane is dumber.

Sorry if this has been brought up already, but how many guys for Bama last night would Cal have benched due their "inability to defend"?

To me, his commitment to playing man defense where all 5 guys can switch is what ultimately is killing our offense. The inability to defend is the reason Cal routinely doesn't play shooters or simply refuses to recruit guys who are elite shooters.

Cal can morph to the Nova offense, but it will look like pure shit if he's unwilling to play guys who can shoot and just accept some defensive short-comings in the trade off. He sure as hell seems ok accepting the offensive short-comings.
