herald leader has a portal that allows you to find the salary of every fcps employee. The pay is not shitty....and the hours are a dream.
The good teachers-- the ones you actually want teaching-- are spending a lot of time working outside of class time. Grading papers, prepping new assignments, extracurricular activities. Teachers don't work 7:30-3, Mon-Fri.

And the pay is relatively shitty when you keep in mind what they have to do. The good schools in JCPS have a large percentage of rough students with spotty family support. The good schools. And the "good" students still include a large percentage of entitled sh*t-heads. Teachers have to be "on" all day as well. (Again, the good ones-- the ones you want to be pursuing these jobs.) An actively engaging lesson is literally a performance. It's physically, emotionally, and intellectually exhausting.

All the teachers that everyone knows work 80 hours a week and don't even take much time off during the summer.

Everyone who went to public school saw that over half the teachers gave less of a shit than the students.

Kinda crazy, no?

Teachers make good money relative to time off/local averages.

Also, how does anyone involved in an institution that's been in the bottom 5 of performance since they started measuring such things get off with this much entitlement? How the hell can you "ruin" public education in Kentucky?
This is ignorant as hell, but not surprising. According to US News and World Reports, Kentucky schools ranked 17th in 2017. Pretty damn impressive for a poor as dirt backwards ass state. It's amazing also to consider benefits you were promised when you were hired, in some cases decades ago to now be considered entitlements.

Outside of JP, I'd assume most people work 2000 hours at minimum.

I'm usually at work around 10 hours a day (not including Saturdays) then texting/emailing/calling a couple more hours at night.

I don't think anyone in here doesn't appreciate the work teachers do, I just don't think they should be canonized for choosing to enter a profession where they know what to expect. If they were unaware, they should have done their home work. /CSIMiami

...to add to that, the way it went down. Which, in itself, isn’t wholly uncommon in Frankfort but given the intense spotlight on that issue it was tone deaf to say the least.

That wouldn’t (won’t) be a fun decision to defend come campaign season.
Yeah, I don't care if the bill is 100% perfect, solves the world's problems, etc., but when you push it through like that you're asking for a shitstorm.

Or 24th. And of course, we are bottom 5 in high school diploma achievement. So, bottom 5 is an exaggeration, but the public schools, especially outside of Fayette County and Northern Kentucky are largely sub-average at best.

Ummm, people outside of the government benefits change all the time. Almost every year. Again, normal job.

I'm all for investing in education, specifically the low income areas of the state, but according to the limited research (watching Hey Ky) I don't really get the fuss.

So what message are these adults sending their kids? When it comes to things changing just throw a temper tantrum to show those above you that you mean business? When they have assignments the kids don’t like should the children just walk out?

BTW, in Louisville the day before spring break is national cut day and I served 2 days in school detention for cutting that day.

Great comparison. [thumb2]

-yes, 9hrs a day, all weekends off, 2 months off straight in summer, 3 weeks off for xmas, *all* the holidays...most folks work on cbus, MLK, presidents day. It's a nice schedule.

-my daughter's 5th grade teacher makes nearly 70k. Not bad for a dude in his mid 30's. My niece makes 55k at age 32. When schedule is taken into account...the pay ain't shitty.

-not anti teacher, appreciate the good ones...I just don't deify them.

This is why so many of the best educated, most in-demand people are clamoring to do it. Ask Bbdk or Pti, they'll tell you guys are getting poached out of banking, insurance, out of investment firms... They can't keep their people out of the public schools. Basically if you can get a job teaching in the public school system you're set. Living the dream.

Nevermind gambling and marijuana (since it won’t happen here anytime soon) I’d be OK with st least looking at the possibility of maybe not giving away so much tax money in the form of tax breaks. Maybe that makes me a radical, I dunno.

Agree 100%... but "tax break" is a tough one. There have been countless articles on "tax breaks" related to sales tax in Kentucky but citizens would revolt if the most financially impactful "breaks" were rescinded (tax on food and food ingredients, residential electricity, real property sales, services, labor, occasional sales, 501(c)(3)'s, etc etc). Everyone wants to get rid of the "breaks" until it affects them.

This might be true at the state government level, but not necessarily for the federal government.

I know a mid-level GS-14 with a graduate degree is pulling about $125k. That includes a telework policy to work at home full time, flexible work arrangement (i.e., 9hr days w/ every-other-Friday off), affordable health-care, generous match on the Thrift Savings Plan, decent deferred compensation (i.e., pension plan), etc.

There are absolutely bad teachers. Way more bad parents, but damn....

Outside of the pedophiles, remember all the super cool teachers you had in middle and high school? Yeah - they were bad teachers.

At Western Middle, we used to spend hours shooting paper balls into garbage cans with my English teacher saying "If this goes in UK will win tonight".

We had a history teacher at PRP that played movies 3 days a week then gave a 10 question test where it was very difficult to get a wrong answer. The UNC curriculum, if you will.

Both were awesome at the time. Looking back, I'd be pissed if that was my kids teacher.

I'm just getting into work, but I'm gonna hit you with some hot sauces later on... Recently upped my game. Got about a dozen different life-changers in the fridge right now. :fistbump:

This is GYERO, jackass.

You think any of us are actually impressed by this? Ha. False. Our admins do better than your GS-14.

Sorry Bernie, I forgot to add the caveat: Except for pedophiles.

But I work in the heart of Portland and have yet to meet a bad teacher. All I see are dedicated professionals racking their brains and doing everything they can to ensure each child gets a quality education in an environment where most parents would rather brag to their friends that they went off on a teacher instead of working with that teacher to better their child's learning experience. When I do meet a bad one, I'll be sure to pull them aside and let them know what's up.

*Kids are in a Christian School so school was already out for the day. It's apparently a holiday for Big Water so the wife is spending the day taking them out.

*FF party tomorrow night at a friends place. He rents out a building in his condo complex and has one every year. This is the first year I've attended. I'm usually too nervous if UK is involved or don't give a shit enough to leave the house when they aren't.

*Love hot sauces. I figure I better get it in now because my Uncles claim they used to eat fire off a log but can't anymore due to heart burn. Not looking forward to it if it happens. That said, I've been a Dave's Insanity fan for 20 years now. It's simple, but it does the trick. Should open a store......
