GOLF thread

Have played both and Whistling >>> Ocean Course (although both are great). 600 is a lot of dough . . . but you can't take it with you.

Been to Hilton Head several times and just can't see that Harbour Town is THAT much better than Atlantic Dunes, for example. Although AD was about $250 last time I played it, but still about half of what they asked for HT.

It’s a phenomenal track (if it is windy good luck) but these insane green fees are getting out of control, but as long as enough folks pay it they will keep going up. Heard Sawgrass is close to $900 a round now.

It's stupid at peak. Marriott runs deals that make it more palatable but still 400ish plus the room.

Was told by a pro at the Barbasol that Pebble Beach is now requiring a two night stay at the resort, plus another tee time at Spyglass or other high priced course, just to play one round of golf at Pebble. Told me it was roughly a $2000 deal.

Yeah, was invited on a trip to Pebble, play Pebble, Spyglass, maybe one other + side trip to Pastiempo.
Airfare, lodging, auto. Well over $3k when all said and done. Did not pull the trigger. Again, hard to justify. Frankly, overseas to Ireland or Scotland, multiple rounds, is going to be my one excursion.

Playing fun courses >>>>>>>> playing "nice" courses.

After a certain basic level of course condition, the layout of a track is vastly more important to me anything else.

Would I like to play Sawgrass? Sure. Would I rather play 5-6 quirky, interesting courses in that area for a percentage of the cost of Sawgrass? Absolutely.

Agree. AD was awesome, and although I love my memories of HT, it is one of those "been there done that" moments. The "PGA" tag on a course if it has ever had a tour stop inflates the price dramatically.

I have friends that play Pinehurst regularly, and their fav's are 4 and 8 over 2, with price playing a role as well.

I have played Kapalua, which is on the tube this week, and a couple of other Maui courses. Kapalua is great, but there are others w/ an equal amount of jaw dropping views, and more fun holes, for a lot less money.

Yep, that's true even on property at Kapalua. The Bay Course isn't cheap at all (probably $200+ to play now?). But it's a lot more fun than the Plantation Course , more playable, has fantastic views (including holes along the coast) at 1/2 the rate.

Played Atlantic Dunes for the third time this summer. Fun course. Cousin lives in Sea Pines. 730 tee time cost me $120, not a bad deal.
No. 17 and 18 are definitely not fun. Long tough par 4 followed by VERY narrow par 5 with water and jungle on both sides. Usually into the wind. I don't think I have ever parred both in the same round, and usually DB one or the other. Or both, just for something extra to top off the round.

That time of the year when all the new equipment starts getting released. First up, Calloway's Ai Smoke driver. Seems to be getting good reviews. Unfortunately for me, my ole Titleist TS3 has a cracked face now so I am in the market for a new driver. Getting fitted in a few weeks but am going to try and get a previous year model to save some money. Reason I waited until late Jan so the new stuff would be out by then. That all being said, I will likely get a Titleist TSR and pay a fortune anyway since their prices never come down until their next release which is later this year. Just like the traditional look of their drivers plus its great driver.

Ha! You are correct! 17, pulled my approach left into high stuff left of green on other side of mound. took unplayable and ended up doubling.
18, laying 2, 100 out, pulled into canal. Destroyed an otherwise good round.

I will be looking at new drivers this year as well. Got a loaner at the club and hit the Callaway Paradym for three rounds and really liked it. Definitely had more distance than my Ping 410 but man it makes a crappy noise when you hit it. Definitely a potential, but going to try out some other drivers as well.

Try any Titleist. You will never look back.

Sounds painfully familiar . . .

Seems to me all of the major manufacturers drivers are close to the same distance wise. They all have to conform to the same rules. What I am really needing is a more forgiving driver. I can't figure out yet if there is a real difference in drivers and their forgiveness level or just more marketing BS such as this new Smoke Ai stuff. More distance is always great (especially as we age) but I really need something that is not going to penalize me as much on those off dead-center hits.

Just for fun, I put $10 to win the Sentry on Vincent Norrman (90-1) and Akshay Bhatia (85-1). Normann is playing like a typical 90-1 shot runs at the track . . . but Bhatia is in 2nd place, one shot from the lead. Would be sweet indeed to kick off 2024 with an $850 payout!

Customer of mine played a round with Bhatia awhile back. Said that this kid could be something if he could learn how to putt. Looks like he was right. Also said he is a really nice/humble guy that you really want to root for. Hope he wins today.

I was walking scorer for 3 days at Champions last summer, and Bhatia was by far most impressive player I was with. He is stupid long, even by PGA standards and was all business, even in the practice round where I was paired with him.

Awesome win for Kirk, and another heart warming story on the PGAT. Worked his ass off to give up the bottle at risk of losing his family and never playing again. I will take someone like Kirk, Villegas, etc....winning over the blood sucking leeches on LIV.

I would give my right nut to hit that high soaring draw off the tee like he did every freaking hole!

A....winning over the blood sucking leeches on LIV.

I thought LIV was done, "just as I said, i was right, thx for playing, sprinkles", etc?

Nailed another one. You gonna call every weak ass Leaderboard/event 'the story of the year' the whole season? Lmao

Keep gobbling Jay's dick - PGAT "never been better!!!" 🤡

^^^ Maui was a weak ass leaderboard? You're a clown show....just like LIV.

Grow up dipshit.

Not going to argue PGA vs LIV anymore. Made my thoughts known earlier.

But you would have to be a heartless bastard indeed not to see Chris Kirk as an inspirational story.

I've set a goal for myself to walk 26 rounds this year. Got a new Clicgear 4.0 for Christmas and looking forward to putting some miles on it.

Have you used it yet? My daughter needs a new one and the Clicgear is one that I am considering for her.

Not yet. It's bigger than the Caddylite I have used for years but it also seems to roll much more smoothly. There are tons of accessories available as well.

I have looked at those and the Bag Boy Nitron. Sometimes my wife takes her to tournaments and I need something compact and easy to set up and the Nitron seems really simple.

Both the Clicgear and the Nitron might be on the heavy side for her (18-21 lbs). The Caddylite (I had the 11.5) is much lighter and folds up much smaller. I'd definitely let her test a few out before deciding.

I thought that name sounded familiar and when I googled it that is the one she currently has. It was a pretty good one but after 2 seasons with it she has a wheel that sounds and feels like it's about to fall off. There was a couple of things about it we didn't like one being it isn't super compact but the other being we had to use a bungee strap to hold it together when she was playing or it would wiggle apart and collapse on her while on the course.
