While watching the opener last night, was having a fun debate with some friends. Somehow we got on the topic of who we would prefer on our team for just one yr, either a freshman Tyler Herro, or a senior CJ Fredrick.

Obviously this pertains to one college basketball season only, not who will go on to be the better professional player (which is hands down Herro, not even sure if CJ will play a minute in NBA).

Both my friends picked Herro. They thought he was more explosive offensively and slightly better defensively. Maybe I was a prisoner of the moment during the game, but I went with Fredrick. Loved how in control he was within the flow of the game, his knowledge of what he brings to the game, and not trying to do to much (which is something you typically get with a senior as opposed to a freshman). Also, feel like CJ is much more reliable from 3 pt range. Thought he held is own defensively, albeit against Howard.

Curious what others think...

Herro's a more explosive player. I don't think he's necessarily a better defender, I don't remember that being a big part of Tyler's game.

But I know which one of them I'd want on the floor in an Elite Eight overtime. Hint: His initials are C.J., he's by far the more experienced and he ain't a bucket.

How about a sophomore Herro? Haha! (would have loved to have him one more year)

I think it's a good comparison, though I think this senior Fredrick is a more consistent shooter. We like to sometimes romanticize former UK players and their contributions here based on what they have done in the NBA. (like Devin Booker, for example) If you look at the numbers, you'll see that Herro was very streaky in that one season. His shooting percentages weren't all that great- he only shot 35.5% from 3pt range, which isn't terrible but isn't great, either. I think Fredrick could potentially finish in the mid-40s for a percentage and may even finish at 50% or better, which is elite. Also, Fredrick is a better passer and playmaker and a better defender as well.

So, I know it sounds funny to say, but I think we're going to all be saying we would take a senior Fredrick over freshman Herro.

Will C.J. have any more eljibility after this year maybe red shirt from last year? I too found myself comparing him to Hero but not sure the Pro Scouts will and not sure why

Are we comparing these guys because they're both white? Throw Shep in there too.

Do we want a senior CJ, or a Sophomore Lamb?
I think Lamb is also a good comparison, skill-wise. If CJ has as good a season as Lamb had in his sophomore campaign, I will take that all day.

His game actually does remind me a bit more of Doron Lamb's than it does Tyler Herro's. Herro has a little more "shake" in his game. CJ and Lamb are purer shooters and both surprise you with their ability to finish in spite of not being overly athletic. Anytime Lamb and CJ shoot and they're open, it's a surprise when it doesn't go in. I didn't quite feel the same way about Herro.

I take CJ because he can a bit of everything. His biggest plus is he doesn't make stupid turnovers. He's very good at protecting the basketball.

Let's throw one more in the mix... Freshman Herro, Senior Fredrick, Soph Lamb, AND Soph Quickley.

Quickley
Lamb
Herro
Fredrick

Am I nuts? All that to say, I love CJ's game. A must-have kind of player on a championship COLLEGE team. Let's roll.
CJ has the potential to be as good if not better than all those guys. Just needs to stay healthy all season.

Herro is so overrated by Kentucky fans. Dude was a 35% three point shooter- 18% in the Dance.

Fredrick will shoot 10%+ better in as many attempts.

CJ's freshman stats weren't really all that far behind Herro's. Fredrick shot better overall and a lot better from 3, but Herro was better from 2. Herro had much better rebounding numbers, but some of that may be because CJ was expected to get out in transition rather than going to the defensive boards, as well as the fact that Iowa played a lot of zone and CJ was stationed near the top of the key. CJ had slightly more assists and steals per game, as well as fewer turnovers. Herro averaged 14 PPG to CJ's 10.

With all his additional experience, I'd give the nod to CJ now, but as is the case with any of these discussions, it's way too early in the season to know.

Does Fredrick have another year of eligibility?

Yes, he still has another year remaining if he wants to use it. I think he will, unless he becomes a lottery pick, which seems unlikely.

From an article I was just reading:
"Redshirting his first year in Iowa City, and then again this past season, Fredrick still has two years of eligibility remaining in Lexington. Multiple sources tell KSR that the current plan for the 3-point specialist is to use both years, keeping him at Kentucky through the 2023-24 season."

Awesome. Just hope he can stay healthy.

Yup, but so many people see a white shooter and immediately grab the dude that looks like him, instead of the guy that actually played the same style.

I'm surprised the name "Billy Hoyle" hasn’t surfaced yet.

would take Lamb over all of them, though CJ is more versatile.
I agree, I would take Lamb, but I need to see at least one full season of CJ to be fair to him.

I really with Doron and Teague came back for the 12/13 team. That would have been an NCAAT team if they did.

I’d take a healthy CJ.
That's the key! I would take a senior CJ over frosh Herro but we need to see CJ play a full season without injury. If he does, I think there might be a lot of happy people around here. Just think his game is more complete than a freshman Herro and I love his experience.

I really love cj's head fake. The way he uses it and steps up for the mid range jumpers money. I would need to see more games before making a final choice.

Agree completely!! If he stays healthy the whole season, I think we will have a chance to do something very special. Of course other key guys will need to be healthy as well.

As far as Herro goes, I love him but I think between CJ’s experience and his BB IQ, he gets the nod, at least so far.

I’ve been high on CJ since he first came here. I told everyone his defense is better than most think.

So this year and his Covid year?

If he and Oscar come back…..DaffCon 1 immediately

I have a feeling Fred is going to be very consistent. Herro wasn’t. End of comparison. I like the soph lamb and Quickley comps better.

The white boy tale of the tape!

I think cj is more of a white that Tyler. But Tyler is the most athletic white. Both definitely shoot white. But I bet herro dunks less white.

it’s a push
