FIT.Y.E.R.O. (Meathead, wellness, fitness, diet, exercise) Thread

Loving this thread so far tbh...actually going to start using the Sauna today. Idk if Crunch sauna is hot enough but the benefits you guys are talking about is worth the try.

It is definitely plenty hot I’m sure. Anything over 120 will be just fine. You don’t have to be a total psycho like laird Hamilton or Joe Rogan, turn it up to 180 and use an assault bike in there for 30 minutes.

-Sauna seemingly helps everything. The studies are just overwhelming. Also, anecdotally, you just feel amazing when getting out. 45 minute bike/rower straight in 30 minute sauna and I feel like f*cking Clark Kent.

-Make my 8 yo do calisthenics all the time. Especially if he can't go outside to play. 100 push-ups, 100 body weight sqauts, and 100 ball slams( 5# med ball).

-Push ups are easily my favorite exercise. My at home workouts always include 20 push-ups on every 5th set.

-What's everyone supplement routine. We covered creatine. In addition I'm doing AG1, Ashwanganda, tongkat ali, fish oil, immunity multivitamin, and psyllium husk. Magnesium and Melatonin for sleep. Probably drop Ashwanganda when I run out, haven't noticed any difference. Would also like to drop melatonin.

How is the AG1 and similar Greens supplements? I see Huel has a new one out trying to compete with AG1.

This thread is really reminding me I have no excuse to not get in better shape. 36 with absolutely no health concerns and most here have far better gym routines and consistency. Gotta get after it.

Having a close-by gym is a very underrated thing. I moved to an area where my gym commute went from 12 minutes round trip to about 25-30 minutes round trip. That change in time has certainly affected my ability to get a workout in. Sometimes I don't have a large enough windows, sometimes the commute is long enough that I skip the gym. Don't take for granted a near by gym, and the ability to get a workout in, in under 90 minutes.

Home gyms just don't do it for me. In my new house I have the basement all to myself. I have the Bowflex 52lb-ers, adjustable bench, 5 different KBs, a door frame pull up bar, various bands and medicine balls.. and there's just something about actually going TO a gym, eith the full set of equipment, no distractions etc.

Bought a Rogue Monster power rack during the pandemic along with a couple of benches, barbells and800lbs of bumpers. It’s really nice to take your time and see what works for you. Plus being able to address injuries without the pressure of needing to move off a station for someone waiting is priceless.

Hired a trainer last November. Worth every penny. Wife wanted to lift with me. When it was the two of us she wants to debate everything I’m telling her to do. Now with the trainer she just does whatever he says to do. Better than a marriage counselor.

Oh and went back to the gym last year. We found a small bodybuilding gym where we are surrounded by old pro competitors. Great vibe and super supportive.

Being married is kind of the biggest motivator to get out of the house and get to the gym lol.

I used nano greens for awhile. They were fine. I think AG1 makes my stomach feel better almost instantly, could/probably is placebo. Flavor is great. I need to compare AG1 to my other supps to see if I can cut them out.

I can easily do cardio at home but I just STURGGLE with lifting. Even after lifting basically 15 of the last 23 years. Home gym is coming along nicely with plans in the future to really make it nice.

A good trainer, not some meathead that just walked in the door, and was hired because they take roids, but a real trainer... worth their weight in gold. Very easy to injure yourself lifting. Even more common to run a plan that is counter productive without realizing it. More importantly, I know that I'm going to get my ass kicked 3x per week minimum. Holds me accountable. At this point, after 8 years, he knows my body as well or better than I do. I show up, he has it all mapped out, and I just lift heavy shit. Find one that has a long track record training. Especially, if you've got injuries/ailments.

It is pretty nice. Unlike most people my height, I naturally have big Legs with thick calves, a barrel chest, and pretty muscular arms. So I started lifting and I just easily add mass so kept going lollol
I'm the same way, only I need to do some cutting. I've never had an issue putting on muscle, and at about 6'5" that can make clothes very hard to find.

In addition to my morning shake mentioned above, I do fish oil and a multivitamin at night along with 5mg of melatonin.

Anyone follow this lunatic?

saw CC Sabathia at gym today. Dude looks more fit now than when he was an AllStar pitcher.

I am now eating salads only… time to lose the weight I used to need to throw around.

It is humbling trying to get back into shape after effectively treating my body as a sedentary punching bag for over 20 years. When I was lifting then it was rare to go into the gym and not be one of the strongest in the gym. I was always competing with others in the gym, even when they didn't know it. It was a huge driving point of me showing up, to squat more than that guy, to bench more than that guy, almost taking offense that someone was trying to lift like me. Some real meathead crap.

Fast forward to today and despite being bigger than nearly everyone I'm starting over. At this moment I'm training for cardio health, flexibility, and stability rather than raw power and explosiveness. And if I'm being honest right now I'm mentally fighting embarrassment with every lift. I'm still competing with my 20 year old self in the mirror and while every bit of me knows that's insane, as soon as I hit failure I mentally crap all over myself. Despite knowing the road will be long and that the top end will never be what it once was, there is a part of me that wont let that go. I know I have to adjust the expectations and get tunnel vision on today, but GD it sucks.

My wife does AG1 every morning and has been for last 6 months and really enjoys it. I have no clue what it is and really don’t like taking supplements but this is one of the longer ones I’ve seen her use and she loves all that supplement shit. I agree about the home gym. We built a new house and put in a pretty pimp gym with the rubber floors, mirrors, great equipment etc. I just can’t get into it, no clue why. My wife legit uses it 6 days a week and doesn’t go to gym and is in great shape so well worth it but I just can’t seem to motivate myself to use regularly.

I’m 33, 6’5 about 275lbs. I lift 5-6 days a week. Been bulking so have extra fat rn but that’s easy to cut come early spring down to 250ish. I don’t really worry about weight

Diet is mostly beef and rice. When I want to cut, I just drop the rice and go carnivore. Simple and effective

I do a lot of pressing, rowing, and squatting at my home gym

Im a large human and love it. Did zercher squats on Friday and can still barely move lol
On that Efferding meal plan. I dig it.

Started in the exact same place in 2016, within a year I was pretty close to my early 20's strength, and now I'm much stronger than I've ever been. Doesn't take long to see some real gains. Stay the course.

Creatine
Fish Oil
ZMA
Vitamin D
Tongkat Ali
Coleus Forskohlii
Boron
Tribulus Terrestris

Pretty much all supplementation I do is geared toward T optimization. I know it will never be close to the real thing, but to steal a Sky slogan, “marginal gains” ATKOT.

I also have some Ashwagandha lying around that I may finish, but I also didn’t notice much of a difference.

Then there’s the peptides, but that’s a conversation for a whole other day, as Bonz said.

Fityero today!!

@80 Proof I feel you on clothes. They definitely don’t make them for bodybuilders in regular stores.

If I get an XL it fits up top but super long and baggy at the waist because in America if you’re that big in the shoulders and chest you’re supposed to be fat in the belly too.

If I get a L it fits around the waist and length but it’s way too tight up top and people think I’m trying to show off or whatever.

They have brands for this but obviously they’re more expensive and in Florida I basically wear gym clothes/no sleeves/no shirt to do everything minus meeting people out or going to a restaurant, grocery, etc.

Places like stateandliberty.com and oxcloth make them and they’re nice but I hate paying $100+ for shirts collared or not seeing that I only wear them to church or a nice supper out.

-how about those nudes?

-yeah... my wife has used a PT off and on for years. Been going to the current gal for a while... I've been invited, gonna go ahead and accept.*

^I'm genetically blessed and look good clothed and "fine" nekkid... but at 51 I'm losing strength and having trouble losing 10-15 lbs by not eating candy for a week like I did the old days.

*real talk... on the cusp of being an emptyish nester (all kids in college) and tennis/guitar/uk football ain't enough to shake off the 50yo man burnout/ennui/nausea* that's setting in.

*if you know... you know.

Rouge, I’ve had the same problem for years with clothes and underwear 🍺

Similar to a good trainer, having a peer-group that is similarly focused on health and fitness is huge to keep one motivated.

For the longest time my close friends look at a gym like Chernobyl. Was basically on an island with nutrition, exercise routine, explaining why you didn't want to go to Happy Hours 4 times a week, choosing sleep over bars, etc. Since covid a handful have dived in (@anthonys735 , @CSC81 , @80 Proof ) and like a good trainer, have offered up fresh ideas on routines, supps, maintenance, etc. Has helped me push further than I had at a younger age.

So I get it with those that struggle to get into a routine, as it's hard enough to create that pattern. Highly recommend finding folks at your gym you see regularly and chew the fat with them. Most are cool providing pointers when asked and if nothing else, can be a good accountability partner.

Today is my off day. Didn’t realize it til last night that I had worked out/ran 7 days in a row. It works out with the Halloween festivities. Kids do make sticking to shit hard, especially when both of you work out.

I “only” take a multi vitamin, probiotic, cranberry, vitamins D, magnesium and a combo elderberry/vitamin c/zinc pill.

Wish I could do the greens but with a history of kidney stones, I avoid spinach and almonds completely (extremely high in oxalates). I just try and it lots of veggies with my protein. My problem is mindless snacking. Especially working from home. Even “healthy” snacks in mass quantities are still a lot of m calories. And champagne, red wine and chocolate. Don’t think I can ever quit those. (I realize these aren’t great for kidney stones either.)

Honored that you’re thinking of my food after (I assume) eating the best shit on the planet prepared by Thomas Aloysius Keller.

@Bonzo Cat just nailed down one of the BIGGEST things you can do if you’re new to lifting and trying to get a routine down. If your friends just want Happy Hour or to go out every day, don’t exercise and eat like crap, chances are you will ultimately fall back into that routine as well. You really will become the people you surround yourself with.

I REALLY planned on joining a CF gym when I moved to SP to be around serious health nuts but I just don’t really like it that much, that and it gets harder and harder the bigger you get to climb ropes and whatnot. Plus, I like picking my workout and focusing on certain muscle groups.

OTOH, I haven’t been to a bar yet besides the first night to watch the WS when our WI-FI was down and couldn’t watch tv. The culture here is much like KW and much social activity revolves around drinking.

I’m fine with being around it til about 9-10 but then I’m ready to go home and go to bed.

That leads me to my final point, BOOZE. We all enjoy it but it’s literally the worst possible thing you can do for a steady routine. Drink as little as possible especially if you’re new to all this.

Favorite workout of the week. Back day is best day. May scale this back depending on how I’m feeling this afternoon.

Wide grip pull ups - 3 x 10
Lat pulls - 5 x 10
Seated rows (mid lat positioning) - 4 x 10
Face pulls - many sets x 10
Shrugs - 5 x 15
Incline hammer curls // ez bar reverse forearm curl (superset) - 5 x 6-12

Finish with Lower back PT work and light cardio.

I enjoy back day as well but leg day (3x/week) has become my favorite which I never saw coming but stoked it’s like that now.

Haven’t seen many people do shrugs on back day, usually incorporated with shoulders but do what feels good to you.

Just hit the cold tub for the first time in a while and felt amazing. 54 degrees today since we need to get our body accustomed to it again.

I've reduced my booze a lot but it's still the thing separating me from 17-18% BF instead of 10-12%. Working towards the balance but I really enjoy booze. Haven't had a beer in almost a year.

Little hack I started a couple years ago. I get the meal prep lunches from a local place. They're like $15 per meal including delivery each Monday. You can dial in your macros specifically. Otherwise, weekday lunches killed me in the past. I could easily prep these things but I won't do that consistently. So then, I'm basically down to keeping it on the tracks for dinner. If you're in Lex, try Jacked Nutrition. Cool people.

Traps are a back muscle, rogue. I’ll die on the shrugs are for back day hill lol.

Funny timing, we literally just picked up our first order from Jacked yesterday. Stoked to be adding it to the repertoire, their offerings and customization options are dope. Fantastic customer service also.

I suffer through leg day twice a week. I enjoy back day twice a week. Ya boy got yams

-I LOVE starting Mondays off with legs and do it every week. Chances are any gym you roll into the racks will be empty as well as leg machines because all those f**k boys do chest Mondays.

- @Mossip
Serious lifters and trainers will tell you that the traps are so involved with the shoulder blades and supporting their movement, it only makes sense to train them with delts. The other reason is simple. The visible part of the traps are in the same area as the shoulders.
https://www.muscleandstrength.com › ...

BUT to be fair, I found the same number of sites saying that both back and shoulders are correct.

For me personally, I think I have way more time to train them on shoulder day than back day. Back has a ton of different areas to hit while shoulders have fewer imo.

Did anyone here ever actually complete the 75 Hard thing? I'm contemplating doing that but erring on the side of yoga, walks, and jiu-jitsu for the bulk of the workouts and lifting 3 to 5 days per week following Easy Strength by Dan John. Focus on getting in bed by 9 pm every night and set an alarm for 6 or 7 am as my work schedule allows. For diet, anything is better than I'm doing so I'll probably just do paleo with the goal of getting at least 175 (my ideal weight) grams of protein per day.

Respect to all you are well dialed in. I've let a ton of stresses push my health down my priority list and it is time to change that. To do so, I need to avoid paralysis by focusing on details and just focus on re-establishing good habits.

Any advice on how to keep it simple would be appreciated. I've got a good home gym (including a Concept2 rower, kettlebells, a squat rack, etc) and my wife is on board, so it really just a matter of my lazy ass doing it.

Co-sign off on being my strongest in my 40's. Wont have the same stamina/ cardio as 20's but old man strength is a real thing and my 40 something self would beat my 20 something selfs ass lol.
