FIT.Y.E.R.O. (Meathead, wellness, fitness, diet, exercise) Thread

2024 Goals:
-Not Die.

Yeah that’s about it for me…

No seriously, once I’m fully cleared in a few months, 🤞, I plan on there not being a comeback at the gym but a reckoning, Wyatt Earp style, doctor approved of course.

It’s going to be a real mfer to not look, especially in my own eyes, like absolute dog poo seeing that I can’t do anything but walk for at least the rest of the month.

From 4-5K/cal/day and lifting hands as hell for two hours to walking and having to cut way down on cals isn’t easy. Terrified of the skinny-fat look.

I’ve never been a sweets person AT ALL, but whoever said stopping drinking brings it out of you was right. I want ice cream every night but won’t buy it for home, if anything I have it out, then go home. Try and eat Quest nutrition bars for dessert instead, maybe dipped in PB with a glass of milk.

Once cleared, basically doing what anth is and high protein little to zero added sugar. I’m going to have A LOT of muscle to recoup (already lost about #15 😢) to feel good again but this hard reset I’m sure my body isn’t mad about after almost 20 years of continuous lifting/training.

I will be taking many walks and doing yin or restorative yoga weekly until then though. Not lifting and losing that routine is haaaaaaaaaard.

How high does your heart rate get beatin off? I’d consider that cardio but it’s hard to do for 2 mins, let alone 20.

You see the social media post of relatives getting workout alerts in the middle of the night from Apple watches detecting workouts. Lol.
There's been a few times where my Whoop strap revealed late night cardio sessions that I had no memory of. My wife is a lucky woman.

I had mine go off on me mid-coitus with the trainer you know. Apple Watch kept pinging me - Are you doing an outdoor run? Sure, whatever, just STFU.

Guess since I didn't acknowledge what type of workout I was doing, like a nagging hen, it kept demanding to know why my heart rate was elevated. No time to explain, just ripped the watch off and kept at it.

Did make for a good laugh afterwards.

I don’t like wearing any jewelry but may have to get a HR watch for obvious reasons and at least wear it to the gym. My mom’s kept pinning while we were walking wanting to know if it should record or not.

How about just record it all watch and quit asking, that’s what my phone does minus the HR.

What kind of savage wears their fitness trackers during sex?

My goals:
- don’t miss a day of hitting active calorie goals in 2024. Had a run of like 2 years during Covid.
- Hit 1,000 lb bench, squat, deadlift total
- Run sub 6 mile
- 8:30 pace half marathon
- sub 40 Murph (not weighted vest edition)

Would love to have a sleep tracker but I just can't wear anything at night. Shit, I got my wedding band tatted on, because I hate rings, so Oura is out. I can't wear a watch so my Garmin doesn't help and whoop would be pointless.

I am interested in the smart mattress. They look promising when it's time to upgrade.

But what if you get a divorce?

You might look into this. It is a sleep tracking mat that fits under the mattress. It connects to an app on your phone to track sleep. It can even be set up to adjust smart lights and adjust smart thermostats during sleep. I have their scale and blood pressure monitor which are good products.

This may be news only to me but I found an easy way to sneak in a ton of protein without much effort or expense -- shrimp cocktail. Been buying a 2 pound bag of frozen cooked shrimp from Sam's and thawing it. Costs about $15 depending on what size shrimp you want. (As a GYEROMAN I, of course, get jumbo and leave the smaller ones for the peasants.).

Takes essentially no time to prepare and other than minimal amounts of cocktail sauce (which I doctor up with real horseradish and lemon) is about as close to pure protein as you can get.

Hank, thanks for the tip regarding adding horseradish and lemon to the cocktail sauce! Wife and I do the shrimp meal about every 10 days or so and love it.

I worship seared tuna steaks. My wife, however, hates them when made at home. Irritates the piss out of me. I'd eat that weekly if it wasn't such a pain in the ass to make two different entrees.

Sam's has fantastic tuna steaks, btw, for relatively cheap.

Forgot to respond to the recommendations for Lats at home:

- love DB pullovers. But I still kind of feel like I miss that pulldown feel.
- I'll have to try the resistance band pull ups. I've never trusted my door frames, so maybe I need to buy an actual pull up station. I might do that for the spring.
- had the TRX like 15 years ago. I did like it for pull-ups, even if you couldn't really load it up.

Researched treadmills the last few weeks. Almost half the year sucks for walking in upstate NY. Either too cold and snowy from dec-march or too damn hot in July and August. If for nothing else, we can use it to get walks in when we otherwise can't.

You really can't get a worthwhile treadmill for under 1,000 it seems. They either aren't reliable or have bad warranties and customer service (nordictrac is in a class action lawsuit). I really was close to pulling the trigger on a Peloton, but just can't stomach $2700 for the treadmill and THEN having to pay 50 a month to use the classes.

We went with the Bowflex BXT8J. It's their more entry level model, but still well rated, good warranty and I actually prefer NOT to have a screen built in, as that's just another point of failure and would rather use my larger tablet, which has whatever app I want.

Any other home treadmill users? I'll update my experience with Bowflex. I have their bike and their dumbbells and love both.

If you post on facebook looking for a treadmill you'll probably get one for free if you go pick the damn thing up.

Thought about that. I just don't fully trust what I'm getting. No way to know how much they were used or what might be broken that they are hiding. And almost all treadmill makers DONT transfer warranty (apparantly).

That and I have no truck to transport it. These things are almost always 275lb or more.

I don't have a treadmill but we do have a Concept2 rower. It only gets used three months a year but from December through February it is well worth it. I bought mine probably ten years ago and it still works like a champ.

It breaks down into two parts, too, so one person can easily transport it in a back seat. You can tip in on its end for storage and it takes about a 3' x 3' footprint when not in use. It looks like you can get them used for about $700 and new for $1100. Might be something to consider rather than a treadmill.

One of my friends had an ellyptical that he quit using and gave to me. I paid Schellers Exercise Equipment (on Harrodsburg Road) in Lexington to break it down and transport to my home gym and reasssemble. Cost $350. They should be able to examine a used treadmill and let you know if it was practical.

Here are a few options for a home lat machine starting at $200. Several have high and low stations so you can do multiple exercises. The ones that use Olympic plates seem like a good money saving option if you already have a set.

Oh I'd have preferred a rower or an elliptical as both seem much more durable than a treadmill, which are known to have issues.

But I'm married and the wife wanted a treadmill.

I really just want these as slightly supplemental. If I can get three 30 min walks in a week, it's worth the money for the cardio aspect. I'm hoping to get double that though. I'll be able to do a lot of training videos, meetings, etc on it. I love using the gym ones. I'll pop on some tech videos and just do an incline walk.

Oo I like #2. $500 to have cable pulldown and a cable row. Plate loaded so you can add weight overtime and not be tied to a weight stack.

Hank acting like he found a cheat code for life by adding horseradish and lemon to cocktail sauce. Hank, those are key ingredients. It’s like saying, “I’ll tell you the secret to making a good omelet - add some eggs.”

I'll one up his idea.

A quality can of tunafish, a tablespoon or two of Frank's red hot (or more as desired, theres no limit for Franks). That's it. Canned Tuna is about as easy as it gets, high shelf life, don't need to keep cold. The hot sauce has zero calories, is cheap, also long shelf life.. and it really masks the tuna taste if you're not into seafood. It's like 150 calories for 30g of protein.

You can throw in a little lite-mayo if you'd like, to give it more of that tuna sandwich consistency. Throw it on bread for a Buffalo tuna sandwich.

Some of these machines take up way more space than some ppl realize watching commercials and not doing their homework. Depending on what room you intend to use a good treadmill or elliptical will take up some space.
