Fayette County Schools back in news…

There's a staggering misconception in this country about public schools. Remove the bottom tenth or fifth (my memory fails) schools based on the affluence of the school district and you've got the best schools in the world. America does a great job of educating its lower middle --> wealthy students.

I don't pretend to know why the poor are so difficult for us to educate, but I recommend skepticism about the usual reasons put forward.

Does the rest of the world get to remove their bottom tenth or fifth schools in your hypothetical?

Of course, we all know poor people don't count when it comes to stats.

I'd say the bottom 10% isn't strictly being poor. It's having homes that aren't broken. I'd imagine that is a bigger determining factor.

And he does make a valid argument. Why kind of silly statistical massaging is it to remove the bottom 10% of one type of "anything" and not apply it across the board?

My private school was also a military school, so it was a little unique in that it was rich kids and also kids who were one stop away from Juve. But the bottom 10% were for sure slackers and knuckleheads.. and many of them from a lot of money. If we remove them, our statistics improve quite a bit across the board. SAT scores, GPA, college acceptance, etc.

I agree, I was just throwing in an attempt at a joke.

Pretty sure the Paddock Economists told me there was no way private schools would raise their tuition to match the vouchers. The free market would solve it in a matter of months.

School Board member Jones said he didn’t want people monkeying around with the budget. A board equity member took offense. School board member issued public apology a few weeks ago and resigned yesterday. Jones was a teacher and administrator in FCPS for 27 years, including 16 as principal at Bryan Station Middle School. I highly doubt he intended anything offensive with what he said.

That's just stupid. Is there someone on the board that IDs as a monkey on the board? Monkeys play around, they play with their own poop. It's a figure of speech related to animals akin to horsing around. Remove the child from the board who was idiotically offended and too hypersensitive for adult matters and conversations. This sht needs to stop

St X is a good school. But if you dumped the entire male population of Western High School into St X, it would be in bad shape pretty quickly. Further, St X costs what, like $13K per year. Let's say we gave out vouchers of $13K to everybody that you could use for private (or going to public). St X isn't just going to leave their price at $13K. They're going to probably raise it to $26K and waste the balance on BS because exclusivity is a part of their model (as it is for almost all private schools).
What is the per student cost at JCPS? For years, Trinity expended less per student than did JCPS. It’s pure speculation to say private schools would do as you say. As I have said before, JCPS would collapse if private schools closed their doors. Right now, the people paying taxes AND paying private school tuition do more to keep JCPS open than do parents who send their kids to JCPS.

You are assuming that the number of private schools is static and no one else would enter the game.

Many times over the years, my church has had the discussion of adding a school. We don't have enough families with high enough incomes to pull it off.

If you let the education dollars follow the child, I know at least one new school that's opening in Paducah.
Good point. Vouchers are another way to pay for “public education.” Only people entrenched in the JCPS and those influenced by JCPS rhetoric don’t want to see vouchers. It’s a power thing. True site based management would change the game and Kentucky kids would benefit.

I don’t think it’s speculation that they would raise prices significantly. It would be a supply and demand issue.

As for JCPS and what they spend per student, I do think you need to separate out a lot of the poverty / special needs stuff they do from the total.

I don’t think Title IV and college tuition is a good analogy and the law can be created to deal with your concerns. And, as someone else here has noted, schools will be created to compete. Other than Title IV’s impact on college tuition, upon what are you relying ?

Not sure what you mean by this. Are you saying that special needs education significantly raises the average cost for the 96,000 students in JCPS?

At my kid’s school I frequently see a single teacher wondering around with an autistic child. That can add up quickly. I also think the fact they are spending probably $2K a year on lunch and breakfast per kid.

Oh. Federal lunch programs are calculated into the equation? Gotcha.

The Ohio private school 4K voucher resulted in my kids private school raising tuition by 4K. Literally the day after it passed. Luckily only low income families actually received the full 4k (I get a whopping 650 dollars a year) so I got completely f*cked for the next 12 years with my 3 kids while nothing improved for the low income people. Well done government! Hope you got those votes from the grandpas that don’t even have kids in school!

That's IMPOSSIBLE. Private schools would NEVER do anything to maximize revenue.

It’s just semantics, but those are usually paraprofessionals who don’t make even half of what a certified teacher makes. And they’re terrific, for the most part.
I agree... they're doing the Lord's work. But it's a cost the privates don't have to deal with.

What is the name of that school?

As long as the liberal idiots keep removing the basic skills requirements to graduate for minorities, under-privileged, etc, then you are correct.....stats don't matter.

What a creepshow question, lord. I’ll copy and paste some of the email we received the day after EDchoice in Ohio passed that eliminates any identifying information:

Changes include:

  • Slight increases in both categories
  • Elimination of additional fees, and
  • Removal of the multi-student discount

The attached chart illustrates the family impact of these changes with the EdChoice amount received.
These changes allow both our families and the school to maximize the EdChoice Scholarships offered by the State of Ohio. However, the only way we will realize the full advantage of EdChoice is for each family to complete and forward your EdChoice application, proof of address, income verification, and deposit check form as soon as possible. We ask that all families complete the process by September 1, 2023. This gives us time to input all documents and address any missing information before the State of Ohio’s deadline.

Although we are adjusting our rates, no family will pay more out of pocket in tuition & fees than they previously agreed via their 2023-24 tuition contract.

As you can see they promised not to increase it this year! The multi student discount was extremely significant as well, seeing as I’ll have 3 kids attend. Where do your children attend school?

Yeah, boss, super creepy to ask for some facts that would support your claim. You go with that.

I am a boss, and that’s why I went out of my way to post an excerpt in italics and paste it for you showing they are increasing tuition, I knew what you were insinuating, so suck on my post. You never answered my question, where do your kids go to school?

I was succinct and specific. You may infer all you want, as the boss.

My kids are out of school and will be your kids’ bosses some day. I did not claim a school added $4000 to tuition the day after the state gave vouchers worth $4000. You did that.

Come on man, you can make your point without making that comment about his kids. Families are a no go

You seem bewildered and confused, let me break it down for you like I would my 4 year old son, the one that will work for your 30 year old son. EDchoice passed on August 18th - I just showed you an email, clearly written before September 1st, that shows that they are removing multiple kid discounts (30% for the 3rd child BTW) and then saying that you will still pay what you agreed to for this year? Why do you think they would say that if they weren’t increasing tuition? Just use context clues. In the email, it states the increase, but I’m not comfortable telling you what I pay for my child’s education.I wouldn’t be comfortable telling my neighbor, why would I tell you? Also, let’s take a step back and realize you’re an old man in Kentucky arguing with a young man in Ohio about his kids educational costs. I think I’ve done plenty to prove my point, and I think you’ve done plenty to get emotional and act like a small man by claiming my children will be less successful than yours. I think we know who’s the real boss in this exchange 😉

And forgive me actually, it was 6,165 a year, not 4,000. There are a little too many numbers in my head with all going on lately. So actually worse for me 😂

I think we will disagree. Nothing you presented backed the statement you made. Rather, it demonstrated the school was changing its cost structure, because some people who can afford private education will now be getting assistance from the state, rather than the school. That does not mean that a person who gets the full voucher now cannot attend because the school raised its tuition by the amount of the voucher. And, that was your claim.

I understand there will be some parents and some schools who don’t want voucher kids in their schools, but what you said and what you offered as proof are not the same thing.

As to emotion, you shot first. I just returned fire.

I showed the school raised tuition before September 1st, which for an internet discussion is plenty, you will get no specifics from me. You’re clearly emotional, and you’re not even arguing anything from your perspective or personal experience, you’re just insinuating I’m lying. You’re also weird, and clearly need a release anonymously from your life. You can take all the shots you want at my family, I also wouldn’t be offended at a dog barking at me when I take a stroll around the neighborhood.

It appears you are the one getting emotional because you cannot back up your claim. I did not say you are lying, you said that. I said the evidence you presented did not support the claim you made.

Shew, low blow cheap shot at another man's kids and then flat out asks where they go to school, which is pretty insane.

Always been an unwritten rule to leave family members out of it and I figured it was already known to not ask for personal information regarding a poster's children.

Sorry, Hall Monitor. If his kids read that quip, I surely apologize.
