ESPN Article About Whether Cal Will go Back to the NBA

I don't see him leaving until Brad graduates but Medcalf gives good reasons for both staying at UK and going back to the NBA Cal. Sure as hell hope he never leaves but thought this was an interesting article

Cal will be 61 when Brad graduates. He will be 2 good seasons from 800 wins and having his name up there with the legends of the game. He already makes more than most NBA coaches, doesn't have a crazy long season - on the road all the time. Plus, he doesn't get to help kids the way he can now. I can't see much incentive for Cal to ever go back to the NBA.

The NBA talk is getting old and needs to stop. I miss the days of good journalism rather than trying to get the next big hit piece

As long as the majority of ESPN staff is made up of former ACC graduates they will milk every Cal/NBA rumor for all it's worth.

They'll do the same if any negative Calipari/UK rumors ever surface.

ESPN is the CNN of the sports world

Why do they waste time on nonsensical stories like this and not do continual stories on the UNC scandal which is the biggest scandal n the history of sports.

Oh John Skipper UNC man of the year a few years ago is their president . No wonder they have lost twelve million subscribers with worthless articles while ignoring the most relevant stories to their college fan base.

It was be a dumb move like RP made for Cal to coach in the Pro's. Stick with your strengths.

Here is the only reason I can see Cal taking the leap to the NBA. Ego. It's what drives him. It's what drives all the best. K. Saban. Belichick. All of them.

Let's say Pitino gets run out of Louisville. Whether we want to admit it or not, Pitino and Cal bring out the best in each other. The mine is bigger than his dynamic. For one of us to say "that's stupid, Cal doesn't care what is happening at that hellhole" would show a lack of understanding of what makes these guys tick.

Cal is getting at the age where he has to decide "how much longer am I going to do this?" A lot of these guys have one big fear...being put out to pasture/being told how they have to end their career.

His ego might just tell him to take an NBA job and wipe that previous "failure" off his resume while giving him another 10 years with a fresh restart. Achievers want something to achieve. They don't want to do what everyone wants them to do.

That being said, I hope he stays here a long time and I hope his last five years are as productive as his first five here.

Your mistake is Cal didn't actually fail in the NBA. He was given a horrible franchise and still made a playoff run. His reasons stated for not going back to the NBA are many, lack of control and loyalty being at the head of the line.

Pitino being ran out of Louisville would give Cal more of a reason to stay. The NCAA dug the hole 6 feet on his corpse, And Cal could finish it off by winning so much after he's gone that he would be single handedly placing the headstone on Rick's legacy. He would be an afterthought in this state forever. If Rick matters that much in the equation, this is the best way to stomp the cockroach.

Cal might go back one day, but I don't think it will be before his second ring, and a damn good offer better show up.

Agreed

With advancements in modern science and his high level income, it's not crazy to think that Cal could live to be 245, maybe 300. And then he could coach for us until 2317!
His 154 final fours and 40 championships will be his greatest source of embarrassment when he retires. One every eight years? Where do you think you're coaching, South Dakota State?

Let's refocus the attention where it needs to be

Hey, Louisville. Remember that time your coaches hired a bunch of whores and you got your fake banner torn down? That was awesome

When Cleveland Cavs offered Coach Cal Team President and Head Coach it was for either $60 million for 7 years or $80 million for 10 years. That is $8 million a year to be Team President and Head Coach at the NBA Level and one of the best right now at Cleveland Cavs. Coach Cal already makes $8 million and we know he continues to win and go to Elite 8's and Final Fours and winning National Championships he will be at $10 million before you know it. Coach Cal knows he has the best setup right now in the NCAA at making $8 million plus all his incentives through 2024. Once again give thanks to Mitch Barnhart getting Coach Cal Contract and Salary better than most NBA team head coaching positions. Coach Cal revealed a bucket list back in May 2017 to ESPN and the big one was hitting the #12 National Championships since UCLA has 11 National Championships. That would be 4 more National Championships to get to #12 and that is why I believe Coach Cal will be here when he retires from Basketball. I believe Coach Cal and his family love the Kentucky Wildcats and Lexington, Ky. and would enjoy being here through retirement.

My grandpa is a Louisville fan and is still convinced that Cal is unhappy at UK and is itching to get back to the NBA. Year one he gauranteed that the Nets would fire their coach midseason and Cal would up and leave Wall and company. We're in year 9 now and Cal seems happy as ever. I think he stays 8 more seasons.

Folks it's not crazy to think he will stay at UK, it's also not crazy to think he may very well have some ambition to take another crack at the NBA.

I think the safe bet is that he will stay until Brad graduates and wins at least one more title. After those two things happen I think we can expect him to start entertaining NBA options.

That's not to say he's going to hop on the first bus out of town, because I believe he is waiting for a very specific opportunity. I've said before and I'll say again, that he is not going to leave for anything less than full control of the basketball operations nor will he take just any gig. It's going to have to basically be second in command only to the owner in NY, Miami, LA (clips or lakers), Boston. Maybe the NBA expands and he looks at the opportunity of really starting something with a new franchise.

Also, I wouldn't be totally shocked if he continued his revolution/crusade in some capacity. He's never been shy with his ideas, criticisms, philosophies etc...Maybe the thought of being athletic director has crossed his mind. He can also talk with the best of them, so the booth isn't totally out of the question. He'd be the Gruden of basketball, and with that platform he could also continue his mission.
