Giving you all a heads up, this was written by Doug Gottlieb

But even if you do not want click on that and read it (it's a letter advocating inclusion), it's still a good question for this board:
Do you think Eddie Sutton belongs in the HOF, why or why not?

f no

they have a college basketball hall of fame. it's good enough for people like him

and screw anything that pompous prick gottlieb is involved in

Good question. Gottlieb did a nice job with good points. UK was just one stop for him, and my school suffered sanctions on his watch, I could see where others might. Gottlieb is no angel so . . .

You'll never get a UK fan to probably agree to it but he won a lot away from UK. Yup, he failed at UK and put us on probation but Kentucky isn't for anybody.

That blip at UK shouldn't keep him out if people truly think he belongs but finding a Cat fan to endorse that will be like finding a golf ball in this snow

FWIW - I couldn't endorse him either, for the same reason the rest of you state.

But I think it does open up a good debate - would it be much different in allowing Pete Rose into the Baseball HOF?

As I've said in many tubby debates/wars , there are ALOT of coaches in the hall of fame that make you scratch your head . Honestly, it's not that elite of a group. It's mostly about longevity.

that's a good point - I read some of the list and wondered how they got in there. But.....if you coached 50 years I guess it makes sense?

Would Gotlieb endorse this if Eddie hadn't given him a spot on his team?

I think not.

Pete Rose was arguably the best player of his age. He held the career hits record and those career records in baseball are among the most impressive in all of sports. He was also a pathetic human being.

Sutton was a respectable coach. He was also a miserable drunk.

Aside from their frailties, the contributions each made to their sport are drastically different. Not sure their cases are much alike.

exactly

way too many college coaches

kick vitale out and put mo cheeks in

He could've been the best coach ever at UK if he hadn't had drinking problems. The guy could coach. Look at the places he excelled: Creighton, Arky, and Okie St. Not considered basketball powers.

He should go in the Hall.

When Cal said "Kentucky isn't just for everybody" he wasn't just talking about players.
When I was younger I blamed Sutton for the probation. With a little more maturity and less naivety I realize a lot of the issues that led to the extreme punishment dealt out to UK were in place before Eddie got here. Watching his battles with his demons here and OSU, I am forced to either accept that he had an illness he could not manage or revile him as being of weak character worthy of pity.
His accomplishments are Hall worthy.
On a lighter note it would reinforce the "Kentucky effect" in that when you coach at UK, if you are not a drunk you will win a title, and if you are not a drunk and a f---up you will get into Hall of Fame.

Sutton was a cheat and a miserable human being too. I know Rex isn't popular on this board but his account of what happened in Lexington during the Sutton era pretty much fits the rumors we heard at the time.

I hope he never makes it in the HOF.

There is a difference. Rose committed the one crime that specifically eliminates a player from the HOF. Sutton didn't do that. But, I still don't want him in.

Never is a long time, but I can think of dozens who should go before.

Not to be nit picky but Rose committed the one crime that got him banned from Baseball. The HOF is not an official part of baseball. The HOF could induct Rose tomorrow if it wanted.

Absolutely NOT until Joe B gets in Springfield!! Nobody has followed a legend and had the success he had following Adolph - nobody. Coach Hall first, then we talk.
Think I agree with this,I know it won't be popular but you could put Tubby in the same conversation.Sutton's short stay at UK and the issues that came with his departure cast a large cloud over the other coaching stops before and after UK,who is to say what he did or didn't do at those places that might have been questionable. Does he deserve to be in,probably, but because of what happened here as a Cat fan I don't want him there.

Per the BBWAA Election Committee Rules...
E. Any player on Baseball's ineligible list shall not be an eligible candidate.

Pete was one of the greatest players of all time, I don't think Sutton is comparable. I think he belongs in the college hall but not the national hall.

I honestly don't think Sutton did anything that wasn't already being done when he got here though. Except get caught. We had Len Hamilton for gosh sake . Now the story about Rex and his taste in women, if true, is a game changer for me .

I'll give you a point blank answer. No. The reason why should be obvious. What he did and let happen at UK. That and the desperate way he tried to pad his total wins. Add to that he had I'll say issues. I don't wish to condemn the man for that. Goodness knows there are probably guys in the HOF now who've had those issues, millions do, but add it all up and the result in my calculations come down to two simple letters. NO.

no, his accomplishments aren't comparable, I agree.
But Rose did make a huge mistake with the gambling - Sutton did what he did. That's the only connection.
