Bernie, thanks for sharing that. In late January 1991 I was sleeping in the open with a mechanized scouting unit with the 4th Cavalry on the Saudi-Iraq border. Rainy, windy and very chilling. People don't realize how cold you can get in places like Vietnam, and in my case Saudi Arabia, when exposed to the elements.
Ever hear of "The Street Without Joy"? We made regular runs on it to Hue. We had a jeep with a mini gun on it, so we were pretty well armed. The marines had check points on both ends of the pass and you had to be well armed and have time to complete your trip before dark or they wouldn't let you on it. The guy that wrote the book that the street is known by died while on a mission with the marines. I guess he was in the same line of work as you.

Oh yeah. Bernard Fall is a well-regarded name among my tribe. I read the book long ago.

All that was before my time, of course, but I was lucky enough to get to work with some of the Vietnam Era—correspondents who had done great work there. I got to be good friends with Richard Pyle before he died —the AP’s last bureau chief in Saigon.

If you are looking for an interesting read, he wrote a book called “Lost Over Laos” about four correspondents who were shot down in a helicopter over Laos and their bodies were never recovered. Decades later, Pyle and a friend led a dejegation that was able to recover some remains. Remarkable story.

Good morning from ATX. Currently 80°F and cloudy. Muggy. Today's high predicted around 105°F. Heat dome remains in place.

Watched replay of Cats vs Canada last night for second time. Reeves really shoots the lights out. Cats vs Team Africa at 1:30 pm ET today.

Happy to still count myself amongst the living. Wishing all an awesome Saturday.

Good morning folks.

Sunny and warm in the east. Slept in a little so heading out for my Saturday walk a little later than usual.

Hope the Cats’ can continue their good vibrations today. However it goes today and tomorrow, I think we’ve seen enough to be optimistic that when they get their big guys back it’ll be a fun squad.

Hope you all have a good day.

Good morning all,

Have had a fine time here. Ate VERY well... Supposed to BBQ today. Have asked My Darling to head back home this evening. (Don't want to wear out our welcome.) Such fond memories of these nice people.

We've invited them all to our home as well.

Have a great day and go CATS.

In January 1991 I was also there, and it did get cold at night, but my coldest experience was in Fairbanks/Ft. Wainwright Alaska during one of our field training exercises in the surrounding mountain areas. It was February and the temp at night was -40° below zero with winds gusting up to 80-100° below zero. We spent a week in that training area sleeping in 10-man tents with Yukon stoves (pictured below) as our heating element. Also pictured, a road march around the base of the mountain range.

Afternoon Legionnaires!

Watching the Kentucky-BAL Select basketball game and the Wildcats had a 21 point lead before the refs started getting involved and now only a 12 point lead.

Went fishing this morning and had a decent 3 hours before the rain started coming down. Many strikes with 7 hooked and 4 landed. Biggest was about 2 1/2 pounds.

Well, back to the game.

No thanks, I will pass on that weather.

Solid game for the young Cats. Team shot 40 percent from 3 on a bunch of attempts. Very impressed by Shep, Wagner, Mitchell, Edwards and especially Reeves who was on fire -8 threes on 11 attempts I think.

Not overreacting to these games. But it is a fun summer diversion and I think we can clearly say the freshmen are major D-1 caliber players. That’s the only takeaway I was hoping for.

Reds needs to step it up now. Blanked last 2 games and now dowm 2-0 in the 5th

Good morning D-League gray and rainy in the east.

Well it has now been OVER ONE Week since my Cincinnati Reds have scored a single run. Shutout Sunday, All Star break, shutout Friday and Saturday.

The weirdest part? That happens immediately after the team sets a franchise record of 22 straight games with a home run.

Baseball is a crazy game.

Hope the Cats have one more good performance in them. I suspect they’ll be playing the Canadians, the refs and the crowd this evening.

Have a good day folks.

Bernie - (and others) We were talking Friday about journalists like Bernard Fall killed in Vietnam.

A friend sent this to me -- I'd somehow missed it.

The bottom line -- there has been a push for a memorial on the National Mall to honor journalists killed doing their job. They've got a site approved now, and it is expected to be open in about five years. This being Washington, make it ten. I hope I can hold on that long. I'd like to see what they come up with.

Morning Legionnaires!

85° this morning with a high to be in the low 90's.

Went fishing early this morning at Rattler and caught three. Largest was 2.1lbs. There was another guy there and he caught a couple of three pounders. He was in a kayak and fished area's I could not reach wading.

Come on Reds, at least show us you can still score. Salvage this one game so we can at least share the lead in the NL Cental.

OK folks, sit back, relax, and enjoy the day the Lord has made.

Good morning from ATX. Currently 80°F and clear. Excessive heat warning in effect until 9 pm tonight. Today's high may hit 107°F.

How about them Cats!?!? Canada pulled within 4. Cats responded. Antonio Reeves = MOP and deservedly so.

Monday, Monday... Co-worker out this week. Hope we're not too busy. Wishing y'all a good one.

Morning Legionnaires!

71° this morning with a high around 100°. Next few days are supposed to be over 100° and sunny.

The Cats looked good and seemed to play better defense than they have in the past couple of years, but they looked good in the Bahamas last year too. Hard to really say though without a big in the lineup. It looks like Ugonna will be out longer than originally stated according to a new report. Perhaps they are trying to make sure he will be fully healed and strong enough to take the pounding the other bigs will be dishing out.

Not much going on other than the norm today so...You folks be careful out there and try to enjoy your day even if it is Monday.

God Bless.

Good morning folks. Cloudy and cooler in the east.

Great to see Kentucky basketball win a gold medal in a FIBA world competition, especially with a largely freshman team. The competition wasn’t NCAA Top Ten, but it wasn’t as bad as some are saying. The same caliber of teams manhandled Baylor last summer.

And while my Reds didn’t win, the team scored! It had been over a week since a Cincy player touched home plate. Baby steps.

Hope you all have a good day.

While I haven't seen official confirmation, I believe the two teens killed in the Lake Cumberland boating accident over the weekend are from here in Villa Hills and grandsons of a good acquaintance of mine. I last spoke with her a couple weeks back. Her husband is quite prominent around here. Sad regardless of whose kids they are, but hurts more when you know their ancestors.

It is 72.5°F and sunny at the moment even though we had a thunderstorm move through earlier and gave us .04" of rain. We are supposed to get to 86° today and a good chance for more rain.

I enjoyed the game last night. We need a big man, but without a big man Tre Mitchell is ready to shine. I like the young man. Also Edwards found a slot where his length can really show his talent.

I like a bunch of these kids.

Read where the Reds not scoring in three straight games with fewer than nine hits total is a first in the last 130 years of MLB. Maybe that means ever since I wonder what records exist from before 1893. The AL didn't even exist a 130 years ago.

Now have confirmation that they are Cole & Chase Fischer, grandsons of builder Henry Fischer & Elaine whom I know. Fischer builds homes in five states after starting in NKy 40 years ago.

That's a heartbreaking story.

I went to one of the online versions and they say the father witnessed the accident that killed his two sons. Whatever the circumstances, and there is no reason to believe he was careless in any way, he will never have a moment of peace from second guessing himself for letting them be out there on a jetski around larger boats. That's just human nature. It is impossible to protect your children from every vagary of life, but you still think you should.

Good morning folks.

Cloudy and warm on the east

Just woke up from a crazy dream in which I found myself at a fancy home closing ceremony. At first I was excited —a new house! —but then it occurred to me I had no idea where this house was, and more importantly how much it cost. Turns out my wife had spotted a mansion she loved in the most expensive section of DC and somehow I’d gotten all the way to signing the contract without knowing how much the payments were and how I was going to sell the house we are in. And I like my house!

After a nightmare like that whatever happens today should be a breeze.

Reds didn’t lose. Didn’t win. Suspended game.

Hope you all have a good day.

Funny. Had a similar dream last night but going the other way with it. We had lost the house we live in now and returned back to our old house (which by the way was dozed and replaced with apartments after we sold it so...). There were big square holes cut in the floor with water under the house and a bunch of leaves on top of the water. Back yard had been turned into a garden with all sorts of fruit bearing vines. Some I did not even know what they were so, I started trying them. The dogs were running around enjoying themselves and the next door neighbor was in his truck in his driveway playing Scotland the Brave.

How is that for weird.

I’ll take your dream over mine Warrior. Fishing without leaving the house! Free fruit! And From the sounds of it you weren’t going to be on the hook for a $9,000 a month mortgage payment!

Sunny and 81.0°F on our way to 85° with an 80% chance of rain.

I watched the Canada game again yesterday and then Sherry and I went to have dinner with some of her high school classmates. Good Mexican food. I only had one beer (Miller Lite). I usually have a Michelob, but not since March.

You all enjoy your Tuesday.
