D-League

@warrior-cat know you do most of your fishing in the local ponds and small lakes...and @awf you do some boat fishing....and any others, be careful. Sad that when you do something you love that a freak accident can occur.
Ex-NFL champion and Texas Longhorn champion....
The very first thing my wife told me was I'll buy you a boat.....but you have to have someone with you when you take it out....I have many orthopedic problems......construction is tough and I evidently have some kind of pre disposed genetic situation that I had chronic arthritis starting at 42........I have inner ear problems so balance isn't one of my strong points..........with my orthopedic problems if I fell in the drink, I wouldn't be able to climb back into the boat without help.......... I have had my boat for three years and it has less than 30 hrs on it.......I don't feel like it is wise to be out one the water by yourself at most any age.......

Just so I'm on record for the small chance that I win today here's our bets:

UK82- 20 bucks on Hot Rod Charlie to win
Spousal unit- 10 bucks on Midnight Bourbon to win and 10 bucks on Hidden Stash to win.

I'm kind of concerned about the reasoning behind my wife's picks.
My wife also picked Hot Rod Charlie. Dang.

Baffert pulls off another.

Man, I hope you guys watched the Turf Classic before the Derby. Fantastic horse race that —despite all the technology —ended in a Dead Heat. And it was too.
We were out on the porch watching and I was calling it as it happened. She asked me who won and I told her it was going to be a photo but that it looked dead heat to me. Watched it a couple more times and thought dead heat even harder.

I don't know that I've ever seen one before and I was excited. I lost, but I was excited for the novelty of it.

Once again, fire music and beer. As Johnny Cash sang, Saturday Night in Hickman County.
I cooked a bunch of hot dogs on the big egg today. When I was done I didn't shut it down Let it burn around 350 for a couple of hours and then decided to open her up and let it run free. About a half hour later there was a bunch of smoke. I told her it was the stuff inside the egg that was burning off and that it wouldn't last long. That was about 700°. It climbed up to what looked like would be 1000°. I know those spring type thermometers are only accurate for a small amount of temperature change.

Gasket is still as good as ever and that's about the 4th time I've let it run free to clean it out.

I said that to say this...as a grownup I can rationalize playing with fire in the name of culinary pursuits.

Hello all at the end of this fine day. Been out with my Darling and my Grandson all afetrnoon. Made my biscuits this morning and they worked all day for me, had three more late this afternoon.

Had a facebook "memory" pop-up when I logged on a minute ago. That was my Darling and my apartment building in Daegu (The middle rear building on the 14th floor. It was a real nice apartment, even had a sauna, separate jacuzzi, and the toilet, oh the toilet. I loved that toilet. It was heated and padded. Just a joy to uh... just a joy. I will post it below the building picture...

Good morning from ATX. Currently 62°F and sunny. Our high may reach 88°F.

Derby looked fun yesterday. Many folks enjoying themselves. We'll get back to normal someday.

Numerous chores planned after a walk. Grocery shopping, grass mowing and trimming highlight this list. Must wait for grass to dry out, probably mid-to-late afternoon.

Wishing happiness and health for all our fellow D-League members.

Good Sunday Morning

Woke up to the sun peeping into the room and birds chirping. So it has to be a good day the Lord has made.

My brother came to town and we went over to Bayport. Saw a young man casting for mullet which was a sight to see. . I am glad some young people still do that. It has become a lost art He had quite a mess. The limit is 50 and he had close to that. Said he would smoke most of them and use the rest for bait. That is some good eating for man and fish.

I trust all are feeling well and have a great day.

But if you are tired due to iron poor blood, we have an answer for you. Get Geritol. Sold at your local drug stores

Wow, love those photos BBUK, very nice.

This was where I lived when I first saw the light back in 1943. An old cracker house with no insulation, no screens on the windows, no running water. Our toilet was a little house behind the house. Surrounded by orange groves and lots of love. Now they call it white privilege but we just called it family.

All of this is gone now, replaced by big nice homes. The ruts are now a road named after my grandpa so we still have that. I would trade everything I own to go back to this.

Good morning D-League. You know, talk of Johnny Cash coming after all the crybaby handwringing over "My Old Kentucky Home" at the Derby got me thinking. Maybe Kentucky should go with Johnny Cash's version. It only pokes humorous fun at poor white folk, and all of us with those roots can take it...

Good morning!

I may not have won any money betting for 2 days, but I ate the hell outta some food. Went hog wild yesterday to the point of eating almost half of a derby pie. Today I will rest.

According to an email my golf cart seats are supposed to arrive today. It's been 8 weeks since I ordered them. Hopefully I can get them installed tomorrow.

Play hard, have fun, eat responsibly.

Beautiful Sunday in the Buckeye State. Supposed to get to the high 70s. Bright sunshine. But cooling down as the week goes on. Getting back to the 50s so I'll take the high 70s with no humidity any day.

Usually have the MIL over on Sundays when the weather's nice...she won't get out if it's cold, snowy, or raining.
So got some T-bones out coming up to room temp to throw on the grill here shortly.
  • Good Morning, D-Leagueanites and Lurkers.
  • Chores done successfully.
  • No deer. Oh dear.
  • 58th Anniversary on May 3rd.
  • Our Great Grandson visited yesterday. Cute little fellow. 16 months old. Runs like Forest Gump. Looks like his Daddy looked when he was a similar age. Not speaking yet.
  • Scam phone call yesterday from the Social Security Office. F*** you!!!
  • Nothing else.
  • As you were.
  • Carry on.
  • Get well soon to the sickly.
Happy 58th Don. Kept wanting to acknowledge it, but I've been on/off the board so much the last few days with things going on, that I let it slip. My brother's is next Sunday, the 9th.....No. 57.

If my MIL came over every Sunday I'd probably wind up getting a divorce.

This was built by 3x Grandfather. Abandoned but still standing in St. Helens Ky.
I love that. My grandfather built the house in the picture I posted in the early 1900's. He inherited about 150 acres from his mother's folks and cut the trees to make the lumber for the house. Back then friends and neighbors would pitch in and put up the structure in a matter of days. About the only cost would be for window glass and maybe some roofing material (galvanized steel) . Everything else was milled close by and up she goes. Of course no electricity or plumbing. Digging a well was fairly easy in that sand.

This is the same picture after modern colorization

Derby pie is a chocolate and pecan pie. Mostly sugar and chocolate, so you know it's good for you.

I need a slice of that right now. My daughter lives in Ocala and there is a bakery over there that makes and sells Derby Pie. Looks exactly like the picture above.

I would guess the folks running the bakery have some Kentucky ties.

Reality for me. Mine stayed for 6 months one year (hot months) and then 6 months the next year because she did not have AC in her house (rental). AC had quit and she did not contact owners because the place was a disaster because of about 35 or more cats in the house. She did not want them to see it and evict her. Gas heat in the winter time. While she was with us she (not employed) would just sit around and mess the house while we would come home from work and have to clean the house, do the dishes, and make dinner. She constantly interjected her point of an argument me and my wife would have and it was always on her daughters side. A lot of other annoying things as well so, toward the end of the second 6 months I was packing some bags to go elsewhere when my wife ask what I was doing. I told her I can no longer live with this situation so I was finding another place to live until her mother was gone. She made her leave for good that weekend and to this day her mother will not come in unless I come out and say it is OK.

Sad thing is, now she lives with her son in this area but still pays rent (divorce money) on the house because she does not want the cats to not have a home. She had a place to live in Florida that was paid for and all she had to do was go and stay there and pay utilities but she declined because they would not let her take the cats. My wife was even prepared to have a cleaning crew come in after she was gone and the cats were at the pound to clean the place up. About 8 to 10 thousand dollars to do it. That woman is crazy me thinks.

I can't imagine living with 35 cats. 35 cats?? I am allergic to just one of them. My eyes water, I sneeze, I break out in a rash and have difficulty breathing. My daughter has one and it is miserable visiting her house because of the cat.

If I was in a house with 35 cats I would not last till suppertime

I offered to go in and put in window units for AC and she turned it down. She said she did not want me in there. This happened before our daughter (now 15) was born. Since then there were water leaks and she turned the water off which is why she lives with her son in his apartment. She goes over to the house 2 times a day to feed and water the cats.

I don't remember how many cats she had, but 'Aunt Bee' of The Andy Griffith Show did the same thing. Retired to N. Carolina....became a recluse....two story house full of cats....got to the point that she didn't go out and no one was allowed in. Believe when she died the house was a mess.

My ex-MIL (RIP) was a good Christian lady but we didn't get along at all. Like oil and water. And like @warrior-cat , everything was my fault.
Current MIL is a good lady...and we get along great. She's the type that lets everything roll off her back and is agreeable with most things. Doesn't like to make waves. But like warrior's MIL and Aunt Bee she's a hoarder....hence the reason she comes over here. The Mrs, who is very neat/clean, hardly ever goes over to her Mom's house because it's such a mess and it saddens/infuriates her. We dread the day when she passes (she's 86 or 87). We have seriously talked of just contracting out an excavation company (got a buddy who owns one) and just bulldozing the house with everything in it.

58 years. That deserves a special recognition. We are so proud of Mr and Mrs wildcatdonf. The best to y'all the coming year and may God continue to bless your family.
I certainly agree.
A non-controversial note on Black Squirrels. We had them all over my neighborhood in the Maryland suburbs of DC -- even more so than regular gray squirrels. I got curious about them and did some research. It turns out they are not native to Maryland at all. Back at the beginning of the 20th Century somebody brought 18 of them from Canada to the Washington, D.C. zoo, run by the Smithsonian, thinking they'd make a nice conversation piece. Of course, they quickly escaped, started breeding like, well, squirrels, and now there are pockets of them all over the area, traceable back to the original 18.
Squirrel colors. Squirrel color are result of genetic triggers that activate melanin production spread across multiple genomes of it's DNA creating a condition of continuous variation. This characteristic allows life to adapt rapid to environmental changes of plant successions to natural selection mechanisms adjusting to ever changing environmental conditions. These colors are the result of color adaptations to habitat and literally skin deep genetic adaption mechanisms. These are ecotypes. This is apparent through out the animal kingdom with agouti banding controlling the grizzled camouflage among the most common for blending into the ecotones of plant community succession. These biotic color terms are leucism, erythrism, melanism. referring to the basic shading of nature. This occurs can occur very rapidly in the fire climax biotic communities. The black phase squirrels are an evolutionary adaptation to the darker forest (Older habitats) utilizing a combination of wider bands adaptations of the agouti hair and semi-dominant nature of the black genome spread across the multiple genomes permit the continuous variation characteristic that allows range of colors.

Below is an simplied explanation with this being spread across more genomes.

AA AA AA for white
Aa Aa Aa shades of gray
AA Aa aa shades of gray
These color pairing mechanisms are common in genes across the animal kingdom, fish, reptile/birds and mammals.

You have more patience than I do. I couldn't last 6 days let alone 6 months.

During the ice storm of 2009 (?) we lost our power in sub-freezing temperatures for 9 days. After 7 I'd finally had enough and gave in. We stayed at my MIL/step FIL's house for the final 2 days. It was miserable. The only good thing that came from it was that our dog took a dump on their family room floor.

Dogs have survival enhancing canid senses. They can smell much better than I want. Adults know canine things like where things go. I was once given a prestigious mongrel Cocker/Pit puppy and he was named Pluto (I was 5) . The old lady next door would spray him with the hose when they were in they're respective yards and she was watering her flowers so like all the neighborhood boys he learned not to like her as well. Knowing dog things he decided the way to help the water witch was to hop a top her white picket fence and mine her precious fertilized flower bed before hopping down from the fence never to enter her yard. When she took the worthless dog to court, with no witnesses, she was put on a peace bond. Cell phones were not an item so the dog became legendary among the kids, then because he also he bit every human being who entered the yard who wasn't escorted by someone who slept in our (his) house as he slept under the porch behind the yard gate posted with a vicious dog warning on the gate, including a police officer looking for a prowler everyone knew wasn't in the backyard.

I wish BLM would get genetically triggered along with a few/ many other individuals who seem more inclined to be Alexithymialy triggered. (That is the excuse they use anyway.)

Hello, my Darling and I went to the 10am service and then got out and about buying some needed items along the way. Stopped at five or six different stores. Got home, dug a couple holes for my Darling and she planted a couple flowering plants. Started talking with my next door neighbor. We stood outside talking for, it seemed about an hour. The next neighbor at the end of our townhomes stepped out and started cutting his grass. Just a small patch but enough to work up a sweat. When I saw him nearing completing the mowing I asked the man I was talking with, (I told him I didn't know if he drank or not but would he drink a beer with me. He said of course.) It was my cue, told him I would be back in a minute and hiked upstairs brought three beers but left one inside my door.
As I came out I told the other guy (I had met them both several times.) he looked like he could drink a beer. He said he sure could. I handed him mine and stepped inside and got the other one.

We had a nice time talking... I am thankful!

Oh, I do hope all's day today was at least as pleasant as mine. God Bless you all...

What a day! Cleaned up on the porch today, washed the lawn mower, painted tee markers for the golf course, finished weed eating, got the sink working good on my bar, and made sure I did my part to ensure they keep making fresh bourbon. I cain't do no mo!

Looks like it might rain here off and on all week. Temps in the 50's. Whatever! Throw some weather at me that I don't already have an alternate plan for and I'll kya.

My golf cart seats DID NOT arrive today. I am not surprised. When I first saw they were supposed to be delivered by end of day Sunday, I just laughed and said "yeah, right". They didn't lie to me because I knew it was a lie. They TRIED to lie to me.
