D-League

Good morning from Shawanee, TN. Currently 36°F and partly cloudy. We hit 27°F for a low around 1 AM this morning. Frost all over cars. Snow flurries galore most of yesterday. Today's high should top 56°F.

Visited Harlan yesterday. Some things have changed, while others have not and probably never will. Later today, my plans include heading down to Claiborne County Public Library for more research. Hope I can see the grand baby later this afternoon. Looking at trip to Knoxville tomorrow.

Wishing happiness and health for all our fellow D-League members.

Mornin' D-League.

Ben, sorry to hear about your friend, and he'll be in my thoughts. Having just been through this I appreciate how much depression and anxiety it can bring. Take care of yourself as well.

Battling a damn cold maybe brought on by the weird whiplashes in temperature and weather here that buffet me during my walks. Kind of ironic. I felt like a million bucks all during the Covid pandemic, get vaccinated with no impact -- barely felt it -- then get a head cold the next week.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Good morning Dmigos, can't imagine the D, discussing food!!!! Cool but beautiful here in the Berg this morning, I am hoping that last night was the last time we have to cover our plants!
Can't imagine food being discussed here on the D! My first experience with roast beef was Sir Beef in Owensboro. First experience with ketchup was also in Owensboro at a Red Barn, I had gotten an eye exam, dilated my eyes so much that I couldn't tell what was on my burger, it was good!!

With bad weather yesterday I decided to finish up two US Army STARS for my friend, supposed to pick them up today.

I put a 10lb Boston Butt in the oven at 5 this morning, going to take it out at 1, Going to make Clara's BBQ (my MOM'S) today to take to some friends house tomorrow.

I hope the D has a great day and Prayers for the D!

Welcome back Ben and prayers extended to you during this period. I have had to say good-bye to so many friends lately and it is never easy.

My dad worked for KFC after the Colonel sold it. He started in 1964. John Y Brown and dad both had been with the Encyclopedia Britannica, John Y offered him a position with the company that involved establishing locations for potential franchises and work with the franchise owner to set up and train personnel to run the stores per KFC standards. This took him all over the country. One franchise was in Anchorage, Alaska and the Gov of Kentucky asked dad to take a "Kentucky Colonel" to the Alaska Gov. when they had the ribbon cutting for the restaurant. Dad also worked with the Colonel in quality control which was a huge thing for the Colonel. Colonel Sanders was a tough, strict and crusty old man. He got religion in his last years and mellowed a little. But in his prime he was tough and demanded the best from every employee.

John Y left KFC and bought Lum's and dad went with him. Lums never got to the level of KFC. Another franchise they set up was Ollie's Trolleys. They cook their hamburgers so it would be pink in the middle. Dad told John Y that would never fly because very few people like pink in the middle of hamburgers so get ready for that. But I really liked Ollie's and wished it had stayed strong. Tough business

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing that. Dan Issel was heavily involved in Ollie's Trolley.

My Dad (also a Kentucky Colonel) knew John Y. Brown Jr. quite well. Mainly through business but also because his son John Y. Brown III was on my softball team. He was 3 years younger than I was and obviously had never played the game. When he was up to bat for our first practice he stood on the plate. The III was the Kentucky Secretary of State from 1997-2004. The III is 2nd from the left on the bottom row. That's me 2nd from the right on the middle row. Dad is center top.

Thanks. It is tough. We were good friends in high school, went to UK together, and I was best man at his wedding. Visited him a couple of years ago, and he came up and went to a UK basketball game with me, just 2 seasons ago. I keep praying he will recover, but he is on a vent and not responding well.

Good morning, D League. I'm back after a short hiatus. Very dear friend is near death in NC, from a heart attack and I have been there and then bummed out when I returned. Prayer is my only outlet and his only hope. Bertfan, in regard to your lady who is shaving strokes, just make sure she is handicapped, accordingly. She may win the first couple, but the lower posted scores will catch up with her. Then, she would have to post 65's to win, and then, you can call her on it. Sawnee, when you mentioned the fast food restaurants of the 60's, it is ironic that John Y Brown was involved with KFC, Lum's, and Ollie's Trolley. Looks like Antigua is returning to the Old Ky Home. Everyone have a blessed day.
Welcome back!! So sorry about your friend. Thoughts and prayers for his family.

I know John Y pretty well, and got to know Lincoln well, too. They sat in my section at Rupp Arena, and he would stand at the top of the section and talk with me. He also sought my opinion of opening a waste transfer station in the bluegrass region. he and Martha Layne Collins were partners in the venture, and he had me meet with her and her husband to discuss it.

They mid 60"s was a great period for fast food restaurants other than the burger boys. KFC became a world wide product, we had Lum's, Ollie's Trolley, Long John Silvers, etc etc etc all come on the national scene and it changed America's eating habits.

Rax is no longer in my area but once had restaurants everywhere. Arby's has changed over the years and I think it is not near as good as when it first started.

Another product that changed and one I do not buy anymore is KFC. In the 60's nobody did it better than KFC. Maybe my taste changed.

I am with you on KFC but may think about trying it again. We went back after dozens of years away and recently they are providing good food. May be just that KFC but they are spot on. We were using Popeyes but they went the way of the dodo and are way too much for too little.

We don't eat fast food much anyway but we like the KFC near us in Occoquan.

Remember Lums but not Ollie's Trolley. Kind of remember the name but I'm sure I never ate there.
Speaking of 'fast food' which use to mean inexpensive/cheap....saw a commercial for Long John's yesterday advertising a couple of their meals for $10. Who would have thunk it? I can remember McD commercials....burger, fries and a coke and get change back from a $1.

The wife and I eat out mostly at the local Burger King, they have really revamped that specific joint from two July 4ths ago when they did not have Whoppers to sell because they had no beef. (That was the sign on their window, talk about bad management...) Anyway today it is awesome as all is very fresh and well delivered AND, using the app the wife and I normally order the Whopper meal for two for $8.99.. THAT'S what I'm talking bout... ;)

About 12-15 years ago coming back from a trip to ?...Georgia or the Smokies...I stopped off at the KFC in Corbin....the location of where Col. Sanders started (his motel and restaurant I believe). The Mrs had never been there and didn't know about it. Maybe it was just me, but she agreed, the portions were much bigger and I thought the food tasted much better than the normal KFC locations. Maybe they just try harder because of the history there.
There are two KFC's in Bowling Green. One is good the other not so good.

BK is the go to lunch spot for the Mrs and one of her friends when they're out and about (at least once a week). Actually they were there yesterday. They always get the veggie Whopper. She loves it....says it tastes just like the original Whopper. I haven't tried it yet. I'm a meat man.

You will be driving past Lafollette where my Grandpa died while I was on leave many years ago. I remember...

Yeah, I cannot even consider the Impossible Whopper... Don't have the stomach to try it.

Speaking of chicken, Bojangles' is the popular one down here. That and of course Chick Fil A They always have a huge crowd. There is a Lee's Famous Recipe in Ocala. I always get me a mess of gizzards when I visited friends and family over there.

Lee's was founded by the nephew of Colonel Sanders. I like their chicken because it is pressure cooked the way the original KFC was. That is what made it so different and better IMO. I think Lee's has done a better job of maintaining quality over the 50 years. The stuck to frying chicken. And anyone who can sell me a pint of gizzards has my business

My wife's trying the veggie thing and went to Hardees for one of their meatless burgers. They stopped carrying them already. I tried the vegetarian thing a long time ago. Made it maybe 18months. Felt unhealthy and developed some allergies during that time. Not gonna go back full veggie again unless all the cattle, goats, and sheep die off

I guess you heard that Cadillac is going total electric in a few years. Now I will never buy an electric car or a Cadillac so it does not bother me but I was curious about electric cars and look some up.

I see where the top of the line Tesla electric motor can get you over 300 miles. Most of the other manufacturers were in the 200 +. It takes as long as 10 hours to fully charge some of them. So I live in Florida, about 850 or 900 miles from Lexington. To make that trip in an electric car I would get to South or Middle Georgia before I had to plug it in. Then maybe to Cleveland, TN before I had to plug it in again. Then I could barely make it Lexington. Traveling by electric car is out of the question.

My trip to Kentucky would take me as much as 20 hours longer one way. And it is 13 or 14 hours now. It appears to me it would only be practical to have an electric car to go to Publix grocery store or little short trips around town. Some place you could go and come back home to plug in your car. I am too old for this.

I would eat a Blizzard but I would not eat a gizzard, I would not eat them in a blizzard though, I would eat with a wizard but I would not eat a gizzard. Heck I'd even pet a lizard but I would not eat a gizzard. I'd eat a green-tinted liver like I did in the military but I would not eat a gizzard. I will maybe eat green eggs and ham too SC I am but you can have the gizzards....

I will eat every gizzard you throw my way including fish gizzards. Now I have never tried a gator gizzard so I can not comment on that. The fish gizzard has a little bitter taste but it is still delicious..

You would save a lot of time with this method. ;)

God make me a meat eater. He gave me my teeth designed to eat meat.

On the other hand I love veggies too.

I am an ambidextrous eater.
