D-League

The other day we were talking about WWII in the Pacific. Well growing up we were surrounded by heros and we did not know their story.

My wife uncle Bob was one of those. Here is a clipping from a newspaper (I don't have the date etc. This is impressive.

Here is a picture of Bob in his uniform and the next one is the last time he saw his brother Richard (my father in law) before Richard died, Richard has the beard. Bob is still alive at 95 years old.

I went to Clearwater High School and Sand Key had no buildings at all. It was just wide open white sand beach. Friday nights we would make giant bon fires on the beach and party until it was time to go home. Not a care in the world.

Sounds awesome! What a way to grow up. I know I mentioned earlier that my wife and spent about a week down there years ago. We actually stayed there in CWB a little ways back before you crossed that(new) bridge. I do remember the beaches being very wide.

Yes, very wide. I was born in Clearwater in 1943 and rode my bike to the beach. There were very few structures on the beach in those days. In the 50's they built a large swimming pool near the pavilion and the high school swim team used it to practice and hold swimming meets. Then they built on at Clearwater High. Now they entire beach is pretty much high rise hotels and very few "locals" go there.

If I want to spend a day at the beach, I head over to Honeymoon Island. It was given to the state of Florida for a State Park and there will never be anything built on it. Just pure beach, nature and wildlife

Air Medal with 2 OLC. Wow, that's awesome, Bert. Happy he's still with us.

My ex-wife went to school with Mark David Chapman (suburb of Atlanta). Remember when it happened and she first heard the name she said...I went to school with a guy by that name....not long after she found out it was the same guy.
Earlier in the day he had asked John Lennon for his autograph, and Lennon gave it to him.

I'm doing a D-League flyby...these ALIEN 👽👽👽 pilots are drunk and and won't slow down long enough for me to read through everyone's posts. Hopefully everyone is doing OK. Prayer's to those that need them...like me...these guys👽👽👽 have no idea how to fly a saucer...no wonder they keep crashing their craft here on Earth. Anyway, hopefully UKBB gets its poop in gear and the FB CATS get a fun bowl to play in!

You have an uncommon last name. i had a sergeant in usaf basic training back in the 60s whose last name was higginbotham.

The more I see what is going on in today's world and America, I am thankful to the Lord I was born when I was born. They were good times. From 1943 until ______ a lot of things happened during my life and most were very exciting.
No kidding. There were times I wish I was born later on so I could see what the future would be like but now? Nope!

Thanks Lord for the time I've been in... and guide me through whatever time I have left!

Along the theme of new things, first time seeing, etc etc. The picture below is my grandfather and my father seeing an airplane for the first time in their life. My daddy told me they heard a sputtering noise on the other side of the hill and here came this thing out of the sky and it landed in his bottom land, right on top of his garden and close to the hog pen. Grandpa is in the dark suit with a black hat and my daddy is the little boy to his left (right in the photo) wearing the cap and jacket. Everybody in the holler came over to take a look. The pilot looked very upset. You can see the broken wing on the right.

What's the old saying about any landing that you walk away from is a good one?

Sir,
It is a joy to me seeing you have so much family history to go back to revisit AND you have the pictures to re-live it. I have the one picture of my Paternal grand parents and was fortunate to have my maternal grand parents with me up through my teens. I did get to spend a good amount of time with them though one lived in Detroit and one lived in and around the Middlesboro area. I really do enjoy reading these and others from you and the posters here. It is a blessing to me as well that you have that. I am thankful.

Oh, My prayer today is that you all go forward as men (And Women) leading who you can lead toward doing the right thing in their lives to where they can live life's of honor and servitude to those they either are responsible for or those they meet along the way. God Bless You All!

Years ago I made a call on a guy who was head of engineering at Delta Airlines. Wasn't a highfalutin type guy...as I recall his office (or at least where we met) was in a hangar area where all the work was done. He had on his wall a huge yearly calendar sponsored by a tool company (can't remember the name right now). Had the most beautiful model I have ever seen....posing standing up....totally naked. Took me (I swear...no exaggeration) about 10 minutes to notice that she was posing next to/caressing about a 5 or 6 foot wrench.
I've always wanted that wrench.
What a tool!

Good morning from a still chilly Florida

We are currently 36°, clear and we have a frost alert. Our high will be 61° with winds of 7 MPH. It is winter time and I just as soon this pass on by. So I guess today will be a day of trying to stay warm. So for me that means pouring another cup of coffee.

Trust all are well and the COVID is passing you by or you are over it. God bless

Kind of the same here. We have tons of pictures, letters, etc of the Mrs' family, all the way back to g-g-grandparents, mainly because we live in the house they all lived in and I keep finding things. But on my side not as much. My Paternal grandmother died many years before I was born and my Maternal grandfather as well. So only had two when little and they both died before I was 7...plus they lived in S. Ky while I was in Ohio. No I-75...just the state highways, so a long trip. Have some memories, but not a lot.
As far as pictures, my older brother, and you know how the 'oldest' is... took about everything of my Dad's (and later Mom's)...pictures, etc. He still lived in town where they lived while I lived in Atlanta. But that's OK...he's a good bro'. So I have very little. A few pictures, an old family tree, and some other things of Mom, Dad, Uncles, great....

Starting to warm up a little bit here in Ohio. Sunny this morning. Getting up close to, and a little above 50 for the next few days. Everybody have a good 'hump day'.

I received a call from the President of the Clearwater (Fla) Historical Society and she wanted to know if I would donate my family photos and other items to the museum. I have a few items from the old farm that was of interest to her. I have a problem giving up the originals that have been in the family for a 100 plus years. Some of the other items of interest to them are old post cards that go back to the 1800's and very early 1900's. I have quite a collection of letters my grandparents wrote to each other before marriage and early in the marriage.

These letters tell of life in a rugged environment and the trials we do not think of today. My grandfather was a citrus grower and after the oranges / grapefruit were picked they would haul them off to the packing house to crate up and ship. Growers would go around the state to work and pack fruit. Once my grandpa was working over in Lake Wales and grandma wrote him a letter. It seems a new born calf was drinking all of the milk and left none for the children. They had 5 kids. Grandpa wrote back to have my Uncle Lee (oldest boy who I think was about 8 or 9 years old to take the rifle and shoot the calf. The children needed milk. Uncle Lee was attached to the calf and he did not want to kill it. Grandpa wrote to his brother and he came over with his rifle and got my Uncle Lee. He told him you shoot it or I shoot it but if I was in your shoes I would mind what my daddy said. So he handed Lee the rifle and it did was he was told to do and shot the calf. And the babies had milk and there was beef to eat.

We never think about life in those days in our surroundings today but they were very special people who were trying to survive and make the world better. Most of the generations before us did not have a picnic through life. Times were hard.

Good morning D, clear and cold here in the Berg, but it is warming up in the beautiful sunshine!!!

Got some more TBL shields cut out yesterday plus some CHRISTMAS ornaments. I say every year that I am going to make some more ornaments but I never do. Since I have moved some of my equipment back to my house, I think I will make some this year for 2021, don't want any marked 2020 on them!!!!!

Please pray for my family, my son who is a POLICEMAN is sick, so now we think all 4 of them have it!!

I have 2 friends who are having surgery, one today and one tomorrow. My closest friend is having sleeve done to his stomach, but he also has some more health issues, so please keep them in yours prayers too!!!

I hope the D, has a great day, I think I will just work at home today!! GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU!

I see Detroit has pulled out of the game on Dec 15 and we are without an opponent. WKU has volunteered to play in Rupp as a fill in opponent. I am all for it Coach Cal. Let's play them. What have we got to lose?
The game? If ever there was a time for a cupcake diet, this is it. This is the least experienced team in Kentucky history, in terms of returning minutes played, and the Cats got one gimme game.

I know there are different arguments, like you don't get better playing Ball State, but this team needs confidence, and a chance to work on cohesion against weak opponents.

Anyway, good morning D-League. Grinding away in month ten of working from the dining room table. Don't miss riding the subway every day, but this is starting to feel like Minimum Security prison. At least I get to time my three walks a day.

My wife came home exhausted last night, and noted: "We haven't done any Christmas shopping yet."

As these Irish fellows note: "The Season's Upon Us."
