OC, from my 30+ years in the flooring business (not refinishing) what I saw most of on floors that were really bad was the big drum sander, like a belt sander on steroids. They would sand then use a wood putty as close as possible to the wood, but they were pros at it. We didn't do hardwood floors, we did carpet, vinyl, and tile. Towards the end of my flooring career they came out with the laminates, which they have improved since I quit. Wish I could help you more. My attitude now is, if I don't think I can do it, hire it out to the pros!
Thanks. I appreciate it. Yeah, it was a drum sander. I've never used one so that's why I'm hesitant. The oscillating floor sanders are easy, but I don't know if they could take it down enough to get these gouges out of it. Guess they could but would take awhile.
One the good side, with floors in a pre-Civil War house, they're plenty thick. Probably 7/8 or an inch.

Good morning D, love the military stuff!!!

Little more on mine, I got separated from the guys I was supposed to be with, because of pneumonia and ended up with regular army trainees, which they didn't like me for being NG. Nearly go my a$$ kicked a couple times because of my smart mouth, which I learned to keep shut, at 5'7 and 145, should have known better! I think part of it was when I got done with AIT, I was headed back home, I think that's what it was. I got a few good beatings with the pugil sticks, DI would say, cordman get in there, you're going home, show us how tough you are! AIT was a different story.

It amazed me while we were in basic how, if you needed to gain weight you did and if you needed to lose weight you did. I went from 145 to 170 in that short time.

I hope the D has a great day!

WC I hate ice storms!!! Last big one. forgot what year, we were without power for over 2 weeks, my wife bailed on me after a week because her mom's power came back on, so her and the dog went and stayed with her. Rather drive on snow any day!!!

Yea I saw some of the floors that someone had used them, that's why we put carpet over them!!!

Exactly!!!

Another damp and cool day here, 53.8°F on its way to 56°, but that is a lot better than what Warrior Cat is getting. I have often though of getting a generator, and hook it up to my natural gas line, but we do not have many outages. So it is just easier to not do it.

Where is our South Carolina buddy?

Question SC, was there any significance to the A-10-5, mine D-18-4, other than just recognize what you were in?
Both were basic training companies so they should be pretty much the same.

Company A or D
Battalion 10th or 18th
Brigade 4th or 5th

The 5th Brigade was in the old WWII wooden barracks. When I was at Knox the 4th brigade had the nice "Disney" concrete block air conditioned barracks. We heated with coal and did not have AC. We opened the windows in summer and winter.

We all have favorite foods but if I want a true comfort food this is what I want. I love chicken fried steak smothered in cream gravy and the best I ever had was in San Antonio. I pray a special blessing on those who prepare and serve this wonderful food. Thank the Lord I am not a vegan or whatever they call them

I do too, but it has to be tender. Really don't care for a tough piece of chicken fried steak, and unfortunately, you can hide meat under breading, and you don't know what you've got until you take that first bite.

That's where I stayed in, the old wooden ones. We would march by the nice and think, must be nice!!!!

I went to BCT and AIT in 71, so Vietnam was still hot and heavy. We had AR, and NG together. People who enlisted, and some that were drafted. We were all mixed together. May have been a couple of times that someone may have said something, but until we went through chow line and told them whether you were RA or NG, nobody really asked or cared. They were just beginning to get civilian kp's as I was finishing AIT.

We did not have dumbells or weight lifting in basic training when I was in the Army. We were training for strength and endurance not muscle mass. The leaner and meaner was our goal. If you mastered these you had plenty of muscle for combat and that was the goal.

So we did a Daily Dozen that consisted of your standard calisthenics to loosen up to start with. Then we did the PT Test that had to be passed to advance to AIT. The five events were graded 100 points for each. They were 1) the 40 yard low crawl that was timed 2) The horizontal ladder, (monkey bars) you were graded by the number of bars you could do in a minute 3) the Dodge Run also timed 4) the 150 yard man run You carry your buddy 150 yards over your shoulder like a sack of potatoes as fast as you can run also 5) the mile run, also timed.

In addition we had the Obstacle Course and other things such as pugil stick training. Here is a short video of Basic Training in 1967. I was at Ft Knox in 1967 as a Drill Sgt

I think that by the time I went through Basic, they had ditched the low crawl for an inverted crawl.

Wasn't fun. It was know as Little Korea, but I called it Fort Leonard Woodtick, since every time you stopped for a break, you had to check your buddy for ticks, as they fell out of the trees onto you. When I got there, a couple of guys I knew visited me in reception station. They were off for the day since they were in AIT for heavy equipment and all the equipment was frozen to the ground. By the time I left, in early August, it was 95 degrees with terrible humidity. Ironically, I went back there for training, one summer, about 5 years later. Wasn't nearly as bad as BCT and AIT.
I remember it being called Little Korea as well. It was 65° one day and snowed that night. The weather would change in a hurry there.

Colder in OK this morning than Ohio. Getting to be that time of year. Misty rain here and cool...mid 40s. Supposed to have quite a bit of rain this week.

Warrior, what's always amazed me about out where you're at is how hot it gets in the Summer and how cold/nasty in the Winter. OK and Kansas. You guys really have some weather extremes.

I've got a floor to refinish in the dining room. Been putting if off, then putting it off, then putting it off some more. Might be a good week to get on it. The Mrs took all the furniture out of it...but I'm just not in the mood. But with T'giving just around the corner I better get to it or I may have to get on here some morning to see if any of you guys have a spare bedroom for a boarder. I refinished the living room years ago and it turned out really nice. Used a round orbital floor sander. But someone tried refinishing the dining room years ago (her) and really screwed it up. Didn't know what she was doing so there are gouges in the floor and the top coat looks like it had pooled in areas. So, I've got a job ahead of me. But hopefully when I get done it'll be smooth and looking good....at least that's the plan. 160+ year old wide hard pine. If anybody's got any suggestions, let me know.

Hope everyone has a good, safe, healthy, and peaceful day.
Yeah, the wind adds to the harshness around here during the winter.

Speaking of floors, as soon as I drum up the energy I am getting rid of the shag room by room and doing wood floors.

As I was typing this the rain turned to ice and is hitting us hard right now. Luckily they are small ice droplets unlike the ones that hit us earlier this year. See below picture for the on I still have in my freezer.

Yeah, the last big one we had was while me and my wife were in the old house built in 42. it was the reason I bought my first generator about 9 years ago or so. All electric there too but, had a fire place and that was our only saving grace. Had plenty of firewood so, we had a place to keep warm. Pipes were all frozen and we did not have electricity for almost 4 weeks, no water, little food (Enough though), and I still had to go to work to operate a 45K forklift to load/off load large generators on to/off of flat beds for FEMA at FT. Sill. They would come in to our large holding area then local companies/businesses would request them to keep running and we would load them up and deliver them. While in, we had hundreds of cases of water given to us that were from a previous relief effort (we've done a lot of relief from Sill) so I took a few home for us. We used a BBQ grill to warm up snow to clean up with and a Coleman stove to cook food.

Bought a refurbished generator out of the back of a tractor trailer truck for an increased price because there were none at the stores (sold out). That was about 2 weeks in to the outage. Used it to run fridge, heaters and the tube.

I agree as long a you're aware your buddy's a flipping viper. As much I sense all life is sacred, I see the wheel tracks. The truth needs to be known.

And being in Texas.....imagine they're bigger.

UGA will beat us like a "rented mule." Ugh.
That could be hazardous.

It was called Little Korea because the terrain, and the weather most replicated Korea. Many trainees were sent there, before being shipped to Korea, during the war.

If I lived in an area that was subject to power outages, I would have a Generac installed. They run off of diesel, or natural gas, which is what everyone would want if NG is available. They automatically kick on when your power goes off, and keeps your whole house running, until the power comes back on.

Trying to get this in before another outage. Power went out at 13:00 as lines are getting heavy with ice. Fired up one generator to make sure it worked. The other (refurbished one) that I have had for a long time did not fire up. The propane one is about 2 years old and works fine so, I will rely on that one until I can get the other one looked at.

Me and my wife were discussing that not too long ago and again this afternoon.

First and second picture are of the tree in the front yard. 3rd picture tree in back yard and the other 2 are on the side facing forward, then back view. No snow, all ice and more to come tonight and tomorrow.

Wow and it's only October. I checked the doppler and noticed the big band of pink that passed through your area. Hope you guys stay warm and avoid any more power outages.

29° right now with 20mph winds. If the power goes out again we have enough battery powered lanterns to light up the whole house with plenty of batteries to spare. Probably bundle up, play a few games and hit the rack early. Wife and daughter both off tomorrow (work and school) because of this so, I won't fire up the generator again for power until tomorrow morning. We all like sleeping while it is cold so, I will be the first up to get things going for them. Old Army habits and all.

I looked in to them and I really like them, but I just couldn't justify the $7K when we haven't had but a couple of hours of outage in the past 8-9 years. However, if I lived where you get a lot of ice, or hurricanes, I wouldn't think twice. The have an auto battery that starts it, and it automatically comes on, every Sat morning to keep the battery charged, and self-checks itself. Runs pretty quietly, and with NG, pretty cheaply. I read a blog where a guy in Louisiana had his run for 6 weeks, straight, after a hurricane took out all power in his area. We have 2 60,000 BTU non-vented gas fireplaces, and it will keep our house fairly warm.

I hear ya. Same front hit us a few hours ago. Currently 47° and windy. We may see upper-30s tonight. Love it.

Hello to everyone in the D. Hope life is treating all of you well. Finally getting caught up with the farm work a little bit. Been trying to catch up but y’all are living too fast, damn, thought I was young enough, but it’s showing, I’m not. Anyway, good to see most are still posting and trodding along. Winter is coming, got to get the long johns ready. Cows are wanting hay. It’s a new season, carry on.

Good morning from ATX. Currently 42°F, cloudy, breezy and chilly. Some light drizzle. Thundersleet out by San Angelo. We might reach 50°F today. Weather went straight from summer to winter here. Heard about winter storm warning up in OK. Hope Warrior and family are okay. Our present weather conditions should make for an interesting morning walk.

Wishing all our fellow D-League members continued happiness and good health.

Morning Legionnaires!

Made it through the night with light icing but, still not out of the woods. Radar has some more coming and it has just started to come down. Wife and daughter stayed up until the wee hours last night because they are getting another day to stay home. Needed my sleep in case the worst happened so I could be rested to do the man thing. You know, the thing. We will probably use that line for years to come.
