Good morning D

A nice day in store with our temperature 59° and sunny we should climb to 79° or 80°. No rain and a steady 15 mph breeze. The air quality is very good and 0% pollen count. That is as good as it gets,

Had a nice breakfast of ham and eggs and now it is time for some more coffee. Have a wonderful day

Looking back I think the U.S. Army made me into a man or "an adult". I went in at age 22 and the next few years of discipline and team work change me into someone who understood everyday was an opportunity to become a better person and learn a little bit more.

Had it not been for the Army it would have been a much harder road for me and I may have ended up catastrophic as you say.

Kidding aside, I too am the man I am today because of the military.

It is 52.5°F here on the way to 70°. Now to pollen: Kentucky is a very verdant place. Ragweed count is moderate today and then goes to high for Friday and Saturday. I am very allergic to ragweed, so I never miss my nasal sprays etc.

I got the yard mowed yesterday afternoon in high wind from the Southwest. I would guess it was a constant 15 mph or better. I had to watch how I turned or I would eat a lot of grass!

I really believe that an able-bodied man should serve at least two years in the military. It is a character defining space in time for most. I see so many that could be swayed into a better life with just a hint of discipline.

Oh, good morning to all and have a GREAT day!

    Agree.

Saw a video over on the Political Thread where CNN had a focus group of Ohio undecided voters after the debate (this won't be political). Was from Westerville, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus.
Quick story came to mind. Nephew has 3 boys at Ohio State. Him and the oldest (who's in Med School at another university) went to Columbus to play golf the other day. Very exclusive country club with very limited membership. John Kasich was playing in the group in front of them. Jason Day (pro golfer) was playing in the group behind them. Day, an Australian, lives in Westerville which is just below where they were playing.

The club was built by a Columbus businessman a number of years back who was a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and owner of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

I live about 3 miles from Lowes Ky. But our Address is Hickory. Thanks for the welcome.
Folks a long way back I missed getting a UK/UT basketball game because all the power and cable went out in Jacksonville, FL. Tapemaster came through for me and he would not even let me pay for the postage to ship the tape.

I don't know about Lowes or Hickory, but I know about Tapemaster. He is first class no matter the address.

On verdant:

Verdant is a countryside green with plants/vegetation. That is where I live.

Of course now all the trees know that it is October and there are patches of yellow and light green. The walnut trees are full of nuts and the leaves are beginning to shrink. The corn is all drying in the field and the soybeans that were set out in June are beginning to turn yellow.

The farmers here are going to enjoy one hell of a year yield wise.

My wife brought 2 of these ugly things home from Kroger. Kiwano or horned melon. Never heard of or seen them before. A guy on a Youtube video demonstrated how to eat them. Evidently they taste like a cross between a kiwi and cucumber. Not sure if that sounds all that appetizing but we'll find out. I'll try anything at least once.

Interesting. Let us know what you think after you eat it. What is the name of it

Same here in Ohio. A lot of the corn and soy fields are disappearing and the tractors and combines are out in force. Trees are barely starting to turn, so another week or so, or cold weather and rain and they'll all be turning.

If anybody's an arborist...we've got a couple of maple trees that don't really turn like most maples. Most are beautiful with the red/orange, etc. These just kind of sit there...turn a yucky brown/dead looking color...and the leaves don't really fall till very, very late, T'giving to Christmas. Thought they are sugar maples but I don't know of any sugars like these.

Can't "like" this enough. I met Tapemaster when I was a section leader in Committee of 101, and he is first class. I tried helping FCC some, but there were some things that I could not do, living 7 hours away. Tape knew him, and stepped right in to try and help him. Donated a lot of time and money to try and get FCC back on track.

No arborist, but yes, there are different species of Maples. I have some like you have, and then I have planted the Red Maples that do really turn nice, in the fall.

I tried but it didn’t work with FCC. He needs our prayers!

Not an arborist but a Wildlifer. Of the three native species of maples in Ohio, Red, Sugar and Silver, you've described characteristics of the Silver. It is also hated as the "water" maple. This it? If it is you could consider replacing with a good nut tree and let the squirrels do their thing.

Think you're right. Looks like it. Not a great tree. Got a few sugars in the backyard that are nice in Fall and a hard maple which is beautiful.
We've already have a bunch of walnut trees on the property so the squirrels are happy. But if I planted more....my wife wouldn't be. She hates all them nuts everywhere.

UK Ag got heavily involved with maple trees, especially sugar maples, in eastern KY in order to cultivate a cottage industry out there. Cuz out by Nolin Lake has several on his and his son's properties. There's a couple at my mom's still unsold place in Middlesboro. Harvest season comes at the most unpleasant time of the year, but profits are handsome. Get your taps ready. Some KY setups are fairly elaborate and sophisticated, incorporating miles of tubing.

I used to feel that way. I was a green as could be country boy and was able to meet and learn to deal with a wide variety of people I would have never met. It was good for me. Now I'm not so sure that's a good idea. There are just so many people out there that to put it politely and not go into detail, would be an awful lot of trouble for the military to deal with.

May be but if left to operate like designed the me is placed a lot lower on the priority list. The military knew how to train "troubled" recruits.
