  • Didn't see any White Tails. Our woods are so thick that they can hide easily.
My wife called me to the window this morning to see and watch two small fawns around the lake. First time we have seen them and they have found a watering hole.

Everytime I see one I think of the book and movie The Yearling. It was required reading in our Florida schools back when I was a student. We had a small pamplett in our 4th grade class about The Yearling but when I got to the 8th grade I had to read the entire (big book) It was the biggest book I had read up to that time. It is based on a true story that took place at Cross Creek.

The Yearling is a sad little story. I don't think I want to watch it again.

Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson were both badasses.

I loved that era of baseball. So many fond memories. Al Kaline passed a few months ago and while he was never considered a superstar he was so above average for so long. He played the game. He made the hall of fame for 3000 hits and his steadiness.

Johnny Bench was just a Wow on the field. I sure loved those match-ups with Thurman Munson who was no slouch with the tools of ignorance. he played hard. That plane crash ended what was a superstar career and I am no Yankee's fan.

Tom Seaver was just so business-like but hardcore. man he could control the situation.

Edit: Greg Maddux reminded me of Tom but Tom had heat.

Don have you seen Cross Creek? The Yearling was taken from a life experience in this movie. Except the child was a girl in real life. In the movie her father was played by Rip Torn one of my favorites. This is a super movie

This is what the movie is based on

Besides the obvious "That'll be the day" from The Searchers, and "Pilgrim" from the Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance, my favorite John Wayne quote, is from The War Wagon. When he and Kirk Douglas both turn around and shoot two guys, at the same time, Douglas says, "Mine hit the ground first", and the Duke comes back with, "Mine was taller."

My favorite was when the rustlers stole his cattle. When he found them the rustler told John that he would sell them back to him!
Rustler- Did you bring gold?
JW- No!
Rustler- Silver?
Jw-No!
Rustler- What did you bring?
JW- Just lead!!! Bang your dead!!!
I think the movie was Chisum

Bill James (father of sabermetrics) in his 2000 Baseball Abstract rates Tom the #6 all time pitcher and #1 post WW2.

Bob Gibson was something else. He played basketball for the Globetrotters till the Cards paid him extra not to. There's a story about Bob at an Old Timers Game after he retired. I forget the player's name, but a particular player hit a home run off Bob and Bob said he knew it was time to retire when a rinky dink hitter like him could hit a homer off him. Bob retired without ever facing the hitter again. Several years later he faces him in an old timers game. He hits him square in the back with a fast ball on his first pitch. Bob said he's needed to pay him back for years.

Haven’t been on here for awhile. Hope everyone is doing good during these trying times. Been really busy working on the farm, trying to make up for lost time. Just checked back in reading posts from a couple days ago, good to see most posters are still getting along fine. Good to see BBUK here. Seems like a good man from previous exchanges I’ve had with him. Hope to start posting again more frequently a little later on, until then keep it going, so long from the creek bank.

Good morning from ATX. Currently 77°F and raining. Looks like a wet morning. Today's high should reach 85°F. After last month, we'll gladly take it.

Happy Friday!

Here's to continued happiness and good luck to all our fellow D-League members.

Headed out this morning to see if I can change my luck. Been rather scarce so far this year. Mama's hungry.
Wish you great success. Stay safe. Good luck.

We missed you, don't work too hard but do enough to get the job done well and complete the task. Trust you and your family are well.

Last night my wife treated me to an old fashioned fish fry, Southern style. A couple of pounds of fresh fish complete with hush puppies, home made as always.

My wife was born in raised in Estill County, Kentucky and the only fish she had was caught out of the Kentucky River. Very little at that. But when I moved her down South she jumped right in and started loving her some fish, seafood and learned how to cook it. She keeps me happy

Good to see you back Backer cutter.

I just realized it is Friday. Things like this happen when you are retired. So I am going to hit the pool and do a little workout to strengthen my legs and back. I trust the D Leaguers have a nice weekend and a few fawns visit Don in good ole' Cumming, Georgia.

When we lived in Cumming this is the scene we saw often as we looked out from the back deck. We had some apple trees by the fence and they loved to dig into them.

He made that statement to Bruce Dern, who was the one he shot in The War Wagon.

Sir,
John Wayne told Bruce Dern that the public would hate him for killing John Wayne's character in that movie. Bruce Dern career suffered horribly due to that movie. Bruce Dern was a person who played a bad guy about as good as you could ever play a bad guy but that sure did hurt his career.

The thing is, it is hard to feel bad about anyone who did that to John Wayne. I did hurt that his career suffered. He would have been some sort of box office draw without the "Cowboys" on his resume...

He made it well as an actor but man how he could have done so much more...

Real enough!

John Wayne IS Americana.... That word was created for him....

Has nothing to do with what anyone thinks of his acting or abilities. He lived America it seems better than anyone I can imagine. It is what he portrayed best. jmuo

I don't worship him but I am sure thankful for him. He gives an example to being and living as an American.

An aside; (Means nothing) He died the day I graduated High School.
