This morning i am going off protocol to remember and honor a special woman. My mother. She was born on this day in 1912 in Clearwater, Florida the daughter of a citrus grower. Clearwater was a very small community. Grandpa raised mostly grapefruit and oranges. Mama attended a one room school house, grades 1 to 12 on Keene Road that was build by her grandfather who gave the land for the little school. He had thousands of acres of land that is now downtown Clearwater. When she was 6 years old she started to school and there were no other students in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd grades. So she was put in the 4th grade because she had a brother in the 4th. After school they went home, did their chores and then Uncle Lee worked with her to catch her up to 4th grade work.

Life sure was different back in those days. Mama lived a long, healthy and good life, loved her family by always being there when we needed her. She lived from 1912 to 2007 and would be 107 years old today. We are thankful she was never in a nursing home and was able to live alone after daddy died in 1990 being self efficient and able to be in church when the doors open. Plus that woman sure could cook. Happy birthday in heaven mama,, see you soon.

Hope y’all are doing well
@Sawnee Cat your mamma was BEAUTIFUL!!
Going on a shopping spree today. It’s been years since I’ve done any real shopping for myself and since I purged the closet and drawers it’s kind of needed. Rob said the magic words: spend what you want. Problem is I won’t buy nearly as much as I probably can because I tend to be kind of cheap when it comes to things for myself. So he’s having my mom go with me lol.
Have a good day y’all

Good morning! I slept for about 9.5 hours last night. Woke up a couple of times but went right back out.

Diet is right on track. Started Tuesday and was deep in ketosis yesterday. I used a pee strip to check for ketones in the urine and it showed as dark as it gets. Shouldn't have much trouble at all getting back to 180 because all this that's on me above that is brand new fat.

193 this morning.

If I can't watch the game on cable then I'll hook my computer to the tv and watch it like that. Actually, come to think of it, my tv's will also do internet. I guess I wouldn't need to hook up the computer at all. Haven't tried that though.

Woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head, and then I headed straight to the kitchen and started making coffee. It is very good. I think I put more coffee in than I usually do. Add a pinch of salt to the grind and it smooths out any bitterness. Doesn't taste salty.

Good morning from ATX. 80°F again. Expecting possible record temps today at 102°F. 42 days to far this summer we've seen triple digits. More to come through at least Sunday.

SEC+ Network now shows both Ark vs Ole Miss and EMU vs UK scheduled in the same time slot this coming Saturday. We'll see if it actually happens. Still thinking we may have to stream.

Coffee flavored ice cream looks really good. I normally keep a pretty tight diet, but ice cream is maybe the "one" thing that can send me into a tailspin. I can go off on some ice cream.

An old fireman taught me about that tip with putting a pinch of salt in the coffee pot. It works every time, except maybe for a little kettle of Cuban Coffee.

Thanks for sharing those nice memories. There's something peaceful and low-stress about hearing stories from a time gone by....

My mom was born Oct. 21, 1912. She made it to Oct. 27, 2001. Her story is similar to your mom.

Mothers are the most important folks around.

I loved your story Shawnee.

Thank you Bev. The date on the back of the picture is 1934 which would have made her 22 when that photo was taken. This was in the heart of the depression and people (at least my people) didn't have much of anything. But they had the important thing in life, love and faith.

Thank you Bert, one is always hesitant to post a personal photo on a message board but this is the D League and we respect each other and are more personal than the other forums. When she was 90 years old my wife asked her to write her life experiences and autobiography. My son read it at her funeral. Listening to the lifestyle she was raised in and her life experiences, the many, many foreign countries she visited and the talents she had was heart warming. She lived a good, healthy life for 95 years. There was never a day I know of that she couldn't get out of bed until the day she died in her sleep.

Mom's grandfather was a pioneer in the area that is now Pinellas Co. and raised cotton. Florida was a huge cotton state in its early history. Then the railroad came and they could ship citrus before it spoiled so they switched to growing citrus and cattle. He established a citrus packing house in nearby Largo,, FL and when the Largo High School was founded their football team was called the Largo Packers.

Wonderful that your mom wrote her history down and that of the area.

I'm eating my first food of the day here around 1430. Wasn't really that hungry but I'll be busy and away from home until later tonight so I thought I'd throw something in there.

1/4lb of homemade sausage, 3 large eggs, 2 slices of cheese.

I am glad you are doing clean up instead of replace.:)

Wonderful that your mom wrote her history down and that of the area.
Mom left us with a wealth of family heirlooms and family photos. I recently gave my granddaughter a porcelain doll from the 1800's that mom's uncle gave her about 1915. Mom made all of the clothes. Her photographs are priceless. Here is one of her school bus that took her to Keene School. The date is 1920 and she is the little girl inside the bus looking out of the window on the right. Her brother is wearing the cap next to her. On the back of the photo are all of the names of her schoolmates on the bus and the driver. If you go to Clearwater you will find street names and parks named for the parents of these kids who were pioneers of the area. Names like McMullen, Booth, Coachman, Blanton, Keene, Harn and Taylor.

My mom was one of four sisters and one brother who died at 5 years old. Of the four remaining sisters she lived longer than all of them and she was so interested in the Cook's and Elmore's. I have a wealth of old pictures that she left me.

I have 1,128 photos on my Ancestry file. Pictures like this one, my great grandfather Henry Cook:

I could never grow a beard like that.

That beard is a masterpiece. They knew how to keep them groomed. He looks dignified and a fairly young man. We can make this Heritage Ancestry Friday.

The man below is my g-grandfather from my fathers side of the family. Pike County, Kentucky. His father fought with Captain Devil Anse Hatfield in the Confederate Army and when the feud broke out with the McCoys sided with Hatfields. That Sharps rifle went with him everywhere even to church as he was a very religious hard shell Baptist. I can just imagine the government asking him to turn it over. LOL His wife came from a family that was mean as a snake and her father shot a deputy sheriff in Mingo Co, WVA. A deputy came into his bar and tried to arrest a man. He warned the sheriff that the man was drinking his beer and not bothering anybody. He said he didn't want anyone messing with his customers and if he needed arresting he could do it somewhere else. . The sheriff pulled out a warrant and drew his pistol and got blasted into the street with a shotgun.

When you start asking questions about your ancestry and history you take the good with the bad. He was not arrested for killing the sheriff. The customers testified that the deputy was out of line bothering a customer drinking his beer and no one would ever vote guilty on the jury in Bloody Mingo. That was the way it was in Mingo County, West Virginia once upon a time.

That is probably my next step as well. Having to go to Reynolds Medical Clinic at Ft. Sill has only gotten me the same response the few times i have gone.

"Not sure what to tell you" and " Come back if it gets worse." I only have PA's. Have to use this clinic because I got a letter from the government informing me that if I did not use them, my insurance (Tri Care) would not pay my bills unless it was a referral to go downtown from the PA's. Been to the doctors only 3 times in the last 10 years or so.[/QUOTE

If they keep telling you to come back when it gets worse, just say, huh? a lot and make them yell at you.

The earliest photo from my dad's family.

It is Larkin & Mary Gatewood Higginbotham. The color is artificial on metal plate daguerreotype. (Larkin and Mary claimed the land in Kentucky from the land grants given to the Virginia Patriots).

About 2 hours after I posted that I ate a 1lb ribeye and then I drank about 3 or 14 beers.[

Good morning from ATX. Currently 80°F. Expecting yet another triple-digit day again. We might catch some relief beginning next Tuesday.

Yesterday, during lunch, I walked over by Darrel K Royal Memorial Stadium. LSU Tigers fans were already out and about nearby. Game between Tigers and Horns game also begins at 6:30 pm CST tonight.

There is an internal probe going on in the department butt, since no one is talking the FBI has been brought in to flush out the problem and clean up the mess. One FBI agent was quoted as saying "This case stinks butt, will not be finished until the paper work is done."
[laughing]

Our tax dollars at work.

Good Game Day Saturday D League

The weather channel says it is currently 71°F and by 1:00 PM will be 88°F. Plenty of sunshine today and a nice breeze. The humidity is not as high but it is still here with us.

This is going to be a football day in my neck of the woods. I hope this is the last game we have to go to the alternate channel to watch the Cats. I expect a good solid win today and pray no injuries happen and few mistakes. I have my poolside TV set up so kick it off.

Have a great day Cat fans
