I just watched The Pianist again last night. A lot of Germans better hope that no God exists, or at least didn't mean it when He said "Vengeance is mine. I will repay." What a godawful time in world history (and that's omitting the equal atrocities of Japan). I do think that most Germans at the time were complicit. Many of them rejoiced in the victories (but not so much after the tide turned) and personally benefited from what they did to the Jews and the conquered peoples. I don't think "I was just following orders" is gonna cut it with God.
I'm reminded of a powerful scene in Gandhi where a British officer asked Gandhi, "You don't think we're just going to walk out of India?" Gandhi's reply was, "Yes. In the end, you will walk out, because 100,000 Englishmen simply cannot control 350,000,000 Indians if those Indians refuse to cooperate. And that is what we intend to achieve: peaceful, nonviolent, non-cooperation - till you, yourselves, see the wisdom of leaving."
An entire nation is guilty if they stand by and let a relative handful of their people take control of their government and lead them down a path of destruction.
We are facing this challenge in our country today.
