CI Wrestling Thread #56

Speaking of Omega:

I was doing my notes for the upcoming cornette show and we have a segment of more Kenny playing video games and commenting on things.

I’d never even heard of this Rossy Ogawa until a couple months ago, but omega is literally calling him a Pedo, lol. I know he was some owner and is opening some new Japanese Womens promotion, but when you hear the segment, it definitely sounds creepy.
Nothing he said was wrong about Rossy. When he created Stardom, he used it as a front for softcore porn. Just look up Hikaru Shida or Mina Shirakawa on porn sites, for a couple examples. And they are hardly the only two. They actually have one wrestler in Stardom that legit does hardcore porn - Chantoya.

He heavily encouraged it as well by structuring the contracts to be heavily reliant on selling merch then making the merch be heavily based off sexualizing the talent. And it’s pretty common for their youngest talents to be under age (at least under age by American standards).

He once said AZM, when she was training as a young teenager, that she was never going to be popular because she looked like an adult.

When Bushiroad bought them they cut out the pedo stuff. There’s still a lot of sexualization going on though because that’s just part of the culture, but it’s been cut down significantly and the contracts and merch aren’t based off sexualization anymore.

Drafts should be interesting - guess they’ll send Gunther to sd for his eventual feud with Cody

The sooner they turn Sasha heel the better bc we already know willow gets a better reaction than her

I’m not big on jey uso at all the sooner he reunites with jimmy the better

I guess new day is essentially a comedy act at this point they used to be contenders with big e in the mix

Omega talking freely about stuff while playing video games has been pretty interesting.
Ogawa ran Stardom for years and has a new promotion starting now. He posted something about looking for attractive girls between 13 and 30 for his new group.

Two more WWE releases, Cameron Grimes and Von Wagner.

Sensational Sherri is the subject of Dark Side Of The Ring tonight.
Cameron Grimes was set up to fail. They bumped him up to the main roster with no direction nor any intent to ever have a direction. Then they just buried him on dark matches, house shows, and Main Event.

I think it’s obvious now Mercedes is turning heel. Look at the language she used in her last speaking appearance. Then she came out and interrupted Willow’s celebration.

Maybe it won't matter in a year but a discussion should be had about Tony bungling Mone thus far. There was little hype or promotion before her debut, only teases with dollar signs and such. She should've been announced as All Elite weeks prior to Boston, but wasn't. She's clearly weak on the mic yet every week she's standing there clutching one and speaking. If you want to be taken seriously, esp. as a woman in the wrestling business, please don't dance, yet she dances. Her theme has X-Pac heat and no one is down with cheering "CEO" because it doesn't make sense. It's unclear whether or not she's even cleared to wrestle and her first match is going to be two months after her debut, with a 0-0 record, facing Willow for the TBS title.

Wrestling fans are pretty forgiving but none of that^ makes any sense.

Not to mention her recent history is quitting wwe then getting hurt her second match in the Japan stint so her stock maybe has never been lower from a fans point of view - like you said weak mic skills and maybe injury prone.

Didn’t watch NXT but saw a few clips online…. Trick Williams has the look of a champion but his finishing move is AWFUL. I thought Carmelo Hayes’ finisher was bad, but Trick’s is even worse. Ilya can take a beating from Gunther and keep going but gets finished off by that horrible knee/kick move? Come on. A champion needs a much looking finisher than that.

This whole ‘no more non compete clauses’ from the FTC mean guys can start showing up right away if they’re fired?
I just looked it up, independent contractors are included in the ban.
At least some of the wrestlers will still accept the downside guarantee pay and time off if they want time off, don't have other offers, etc., although WWE might write it out of their future contracts altogether.
But we could also see some people jump immediately to the competition and have situations like when Rick Rude was on WWE and WCW on the same night.
Fun time to be a wrestling fan!

I am still trying to figure out why Tony was so hell bent on signing Sasha Banks. I realize that she is a big name. I realize that she has had some good matches. I can't say that she's a no talent hack but I can say that she isn't someone you're going to miss if she's gone. She comes across as a snooty female dog, complains, and has a higher self worth than her actual worth. There are plenty of gals in AEW that are as good if not better than her. I'm sure she will eventually end back up in WWE at some point but there is a reason they didn't go all in with some insane contract for her to return.

I would've let her stay over in Japan before paying her. Now she is just taking the shine off of people who deserve it more because she "used to be a wwe champ".

Have not seen it posted yet, if so, I apologize in advance. But the Bray Wyatt documentary "Becoming Immortal" on Peacock was VERY good. I ALMOST shed a tear. Man, too bad WWE didn't keep him in the top tier longer. I am sure there was a reason, but damn that dude had a imagination. He brought his characters to life, not all of them was great, but man. He put his heart / soul / mind into creating a persona and Wrestling in general.

She had five matches before the injury

I saw the move he used to win the match and was like “this is a finisher?”

A double arm amputee can count on one hand the number of wrestlers in AEW that are better in the ring than Mercedes Mone

AEW's hype posters always look slick. Having said that, I'm not crazy about these Eliminator matches. I have no idea why as champion Joe fought Dustin Rhodes and to me, Fletcher is on the same level as JD McDonagh. I don't think he should be sniffing potential opportunities against the world champion. Also, "The Learning Tree" Chris Jericho...LMAO. He really is "Multiple Gimmicks" Chris Jericho now. Although, I see him trolling, talking about retirement and then says he's referring to the FTW title, not himself.

The own constant about AEW that absolutely kills me is that they seemingly never get their audio right. I like 95% of their stuff but that makes me nuts.

That’s a pretty good angle but I just can’t get over the fact that your top 3 heels are 3 5’8 155 lb guys no bigger than Tony Khan himself. You gotta at least try to make it believable. The bucks and jungle boy couldn’t whoop nobody.

The Shad Khan cameo...I was like, who's that weirdly dressed out of shape wrestler coming to check on TK?

So, I am guessing this leads to The Young Bucks losing their EVP status and Okada / Young Bucks / Perry getting banished from AEW so they all go wrestle in NJPW for a while? Try to develop some synergy between the two promotions, like Moxley winning the IWGP title?

One thing I know for sure, Cornette is going to be apoplectic.

Didn't watch but this'll either crash and burn or will be a pivotal moment in AEW history that gets them going again. When the awkward, not made for tv owner suddenly becomes an on-air character like a babyface McMahon or Bischoff and his daddy comes out too, there's no in-between. It's a gamble but I respect it. Maybe it leads to MJF saving AEW from the Elite and help Tony, the man he once called a fking mark on live tv. Personally, I never wanted Mr. Awkward as a character. It's cringy watching the sap make announcements. Now he's taking finishers? This feels very Vince-led WWE.

Y'all think the tv rights deal coming this year won't be as big as TK thought? With the Punk footage and now this, AEW is suddenly taking some big risks to pop a rating.

Welp, it is certainly a storyline, all right.

I expect the Elite to beat up Omega next week when he appears. That will be interesting.

Whether you liked the angle or not, doing this the night before the NFL Draft has gotten them a lot of publicity this morning. Hope Tony is sporting a neck brace tonight.
Shad Khan looks like he could be an 80's era WWF bad guy.
Also thought this was funny.

He's a carny, no matter how much money he has, so I am fully expecting him to be wearing a neck brace, and maybe walking with a cane or something like that.

I think Jungle Boy is over as a heel and they have played it out pretty well. Not sure if they could have brought him back any other way. He sure doesn't have go away heat which I suspected before this angle.

I think for me these guys just aren't intimidating. It's like the devil being Cole. Not only was he hobbled but he seems short (for a wrestler) and got vegan skinny. I do like them trying something new and they've successfully brought Perry back, so now the focus is hopefully off the ghost of Punk. But the Jacksons and Perry with Okada standing around? I wish we could see Hogan, Hall, and Nash in the same ring with these guys. It'd look like adult men next to 15 year olds. Also, while it's got people talking, I saw a lot of "that was hilarious!" on social media last night. Was the intent to laugh at what happened because TK is a silly guy? I'm guessing not. But again, they're taking risks and that's good.

So the opposition will likely be omega/page/ftr maybe danielson to combat the “elite”?
Why does the thought of this angle make me think of the Anchorman? 🤣

This is part of it for me. Your top heel group includes 3 (out of 4) guys who weigh less than 200 lbs and are 5-foot something. I don’t buy these guys as dangerous ass kickers who will run roughshod over the whole company.

I feel like younger me could’ve taken them in a scrap because I’m taller and heavier than all of them and have the same muscle definition as the Bucks. I am not or never was a tough guy by any means.

I will give this angle a chance to hook me in, but the Elite in a main even slot doesn’t usually make me excited to watch AEW. Because even a serious angle for those guys will come off as silly indy BS because that’s all they know how to do.
