CI Wrestling Thread #56

I have a lot of older friends who get so upset with how they book Danielson and Punk. They keep telling me those guys should be world champion already and that they need to stop pairing them with guys like Darby or Daniel Garcia. I have to remind them that this isn't 1996 and Punk and Danielson can't wrestle each other every week for the belt because fans are gullible now.

"No I don't want to see Hogan wrestle the Giant for the 19th week in a row.....I'm sorry that upsets you."

That era lasted all of 2-3 years because they couldn't withstand a decent mid card or any talent outside of 5-6 guys in both companies. AEW is in the business of building up new talent. Yea it may seem slow occasionally but it will all be worth it in the end.
AEW plays the long game.

Though I would like to see Punk and Danielson hold the AEW title belt at some point. Would be good for them to take it off a guy that has held it for a while (to ensure they don't get the Big E treatment) then lose it to one of the young studs like MJF.

The Mox/Danielson stable is exactly what they need for the younger ones who aren't already super over like MJF or Hook (Hook having Taz in his ear is pretty huge). Get Moriarity, Garcia, Starks, etc. with them and let them flourish.

Nick Wayne would be a good one to add to that Moxley/American Dragon stable for training purposes. Won't be involved in the ring on TV/Dark until he's 18 (I'm guessing), but that's two high work rate guys that know how to get shit done in the ring and on the mic that would be perfect to train with.

Would like to see some women added in there too. Serena Deeb would be perfect for a woman leadership role in it, I mean like as perfect of a fit as one can humanly be. But for the younger female members someone like Anna Jay, Tay Conti, AQA (thought she had a solid performance against Cargill), Hayter, Julia Hart, Statlander, Hirsch, Riho.

Love these ideas

The WWE roster is decimated right now. Hopefully guys like Bron Breakker and Solo Sikoa can carry them into the next phase of the company.

Dynamite Ratings were back up this week.

1,010,000 viewers and a .40 in the 18-49, 3rd for the week. Finished behind the UK game and Russia coverage on CNN.

But I thought the ratings tanked last week because of no Cody??

Late on this; while I loved MJF's promo, I thought it put fans in an impossible situation. He's the heel and isn't going to get a bigger pop than Punk, but MJF still went with a sympathy promo detailing ADD, being bullied, and having anti-semitic remarks hurled at him. I think we know what's coming next in storyline, but it was awkward seeing the crowd boo during all that. Felt like they didn't know exactly how to react. Of course MJF goes the extra mile though and has a big tear streaming down his cheek at the end. Dude is so damn good at this wrestling thing.

The AEW roster is so cluttered but god would Cesaro be a good fit and make a ton of sense. A year and a half ago people complained that the roster was too tiny and frail. I don't think you can say that now.

With Cody leaving for the WWE, can AEW fans now smugly talk about how WWE is hiring "AEW rejects?"

And will WWE fans retort that AEW just didn't use him correctly, and that WWE will book him better and unlock Cody's potential?

I don't understand them resigning Cage.
I guess if Cesaro ends up in AEW then they have a ready made feud with Eddie Kingston. Did some reading looks like they've had issues going back to the indies.

ā€œThereā€™s certain people in wrestling I do not like. Punk is one. Cesaro is another one, the big Swiss idiot in WWE. I know him as Claudio (Castagnoli). I donā€™t like him, I donā€™t respect him. If he ever comes here, weā€™re going to have a problem. Or whenever his contractā€™s up. I donā€™t even pay attention to what he does. But guys like that, I just donā€™t like, donā€™t respect.ā€

That's weird. Seems other wrestlers think the exact opposite.

Kingston and Claudio were in a long-term feud (in Chikara, I think?) that was still playing out when Claudio signed with WWE and left 11 years ago. I think in kayfabe Kingston has kept that feud alive, but behind the scenes they are actually friends.

Either TK is gonna have to buy RoH to send a lot of his talent to work and keep TV less bloated or a lot of talent is gonna have to be cut.

We'll see what TK's big announcement is next Friday, it could be that, or he could announce an alliance of wrestling feds and an agreement to share talent, or...?

That makes sense.

I know theyā€™re saying the only thing keeping AEW in the red is the game, but with these big contractsā€¦ that canā€™t help

a). Khans have much more money to throw around if they wanted;
b). When the 4-year deal ends in 2023, AEW is going to get paid*, I'd say they make double or even more what they are receiving under their current contract, whether that's with tbs/Warner or some other media conglomerate.

*It is reported that Warner has a 1 year option that they could pick up after 2023 for a "significant increase" over what they are paying now, but my guess is Warner will try to negotiate a contract instead to lock AEW in place for another 4 years; If Warner is exercising the option, I'm betting that means AEW is going to test the market, possibly in competition with WWE.

Vince has dropped the ball on so many guys, but how do you drop the ball on Cesaro? You can make Rikishi and Too Cool into stars, but not Cesaro? Just unbelievable to me.
I'm torn on Cesaro. Never watched him in Indy so no back knowledge, but what did he ever really do in WWE? That can't all be due to poor gimmicks/character etc. Tons of guys have overcome bad booking and gimmicks. Cesaro seems to me just to be someone we wish/think should be a superstar but in reality just doesn't quite have it.

Some of it is probably on Cesaro. Years ago, one of the sites said that Vince was going to be more open minded on him. That lead to Cesaro cutting a promo where he bungled one of his lines which was awkward to watch and he ended up buried afterward. Guy is like the WWE version of Dontaie Allen. There is something there though. He's not Brock of course, but there wasn't much to Brock either for years. He was just a fishy white, quiet, powerful sumbitch who was "unleashed" by Heyman on a weekly basis. I think Cesaro is a victim of constant gimmick changes.
