CI Wrestling Thread #56

I have a bunch of “causual” wrestling fans and I asked if they knew who Jay White was

6 of them has no idea, 2 had heard the name. I had heard the name, but zero idea what he looked like.

Nick Gage does less than nothing for me. He's literally a negative in my eyes. He's a no-talent idiot who should still be in prison.
Apparently he has also stiffed a few promoters over the past year or two. Prepaid him for shows that were canceled due to covid, and when they called him back to reschedule, he won't respond.

Incredibly over but has very little actual wrestling talent because just about all he does is like death and hardcore matches. He would have been a perfect fit in ECW with guys like New Jack, Sandman, Tommy Dreamer, etc.

We live in a world of YouTube and Google. It’s easy to find stuff.

I think most people know this…but the vast majority of fans still have zero idea who he is.

that’s easy to do after the fact…but the fact still remains: no one know him outside of the dirt sheets

Ever watch anything outside of WWE and AEW?
Few times I have, I've been disappointed. Not that WWF and AEW put out a good product or anything but the other stuff I have watched have been trash as well. TNA and ROH had a few good things in the past but for the most part was a let down. Not a big fan of the Japanese product. I like the stiffness and some of the work rate of Japanese stuff but not a fan of the lack of entertainment aspect.

Today's American stuff is too entertainment based. There needs to be a good blend of working and entertainment like back in the day.

I think some WWE writers also wrote some of the commercials during the Super Bowl tonight.
Terrible

So the like that’s doesn’t know Jay white did y’all know AJ styles before wwe?
And some other notables currently with WWE or recently with WWE: Austin Theory, Cedric Alexander, DAmien Priest, FInn Balor, Kevin Owens, Matt Riddle, Bobby Roode, R Truth, Seth Rollins, Cesaro, Drew Gulak, Drew McIntyre, Xavier Woods, Mustafa Ali, Ricochet, Sami Zayn, Sheamus, Shinsuke Nakamura, Carmelo Hayes, Walter, Kushida, Pete Dunne, Roderick Strong, Tommaso Ciampa, Ilja Dragunov, Tyler Bate, Samoa Joe, Kalisto, Bobby Fish, Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly, Swerve Scott, Keith Lee, Karrion Kross, TOny Nese, Tyler Breeze, Malakai Black, Buddy Murphy, Bryan Danielson, Andrade, Christian, Cash Wheeler, Chris Jericho, CM Punk, Dax Harwood, Dustin Rhodes, Jon Moxley, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Matt Sydal, Pac.

What do they all have in common? Years of experience in indies and/or Japan

The vast majority of WWE talent has had years of experience in the indies and/or Japan before arriving to a major American promotion like WWE, AEW, Impact, WCW (for some of the older wrestlers). WWE would be a complete shell of itself if they hadn't signed a bunch of guys from other the indies and Japan.

he was featured prominently on TNA for years. Whether you thought they sucked or not, they had a bigger audience than AEW at times. Additionally, he had a good run in ROH.

1) this isn’t a good comparison

2) don’t treat a guy like everyone should know, but in reality, they don’t.

I knew him as a job guy for WCW near the end of its run before going to TNA. That count?

I consider myself a fairly knowledgeable wrestling fan, but my Achilles has always been the Japanese product. I never got into it. I also never cared for the hardcore garbage wrestling death match indy types post ECW. I didn’t immediately know who Jay White was. I had to look him up. His resume seems impressive. I’m willing to give him a chance, but an not embarrassed to admit I didn’t know who he was.

I just don’t have enough time to devote to wrestling fandom to keep up with WWE, AEW, NXT, MLW, Impact, ROH, GCW, NWA, New Japan, All Japan, AAA, etc.

The kid is 16, a third generation wrestler and won't wrestle for AEW fulltime until he is 18. He will be training for the next two years. Seems Tony Khan took a small risk.

Also e-Drones: AEW is stupid and doesn't know how to book

Yet WWE had like back to back Raw episodes with a scooter race and a spelling bee.
why do you assume people who are critical of AEW watch WWE? I don't watch WWE. I want AEW to succeed, but they are doing a terrible job with all the talent they have.

Just pointing out the ridiculous contradicting talking points of WWE supporters in general, even if you aren't one. I don't know a lot about Jay White either, but I do know from what I've heard and read, you'll get to know a lot about him very soon.

This use to be a fun thread. Now it's just a multiverse version of the political thread.

I think it’s the divide in age groups and intensity of fandom.

I’ve seen the wrestling business go through many bust and boom periods. We’re climbing hopefully to another boom.

There’s also this weird attempt to relive the 90s wrestling wars by picking camps between WWE and AEW. I enjoy AEW more presently but still watch WWE.

Where people like me can’t keep up is with indies and foreign promotions. I never got into NJPW and the indies are like keeping up with double A baseball to me.

I actually think there is less of a divide and more agreement in this thread than ever before, as AEW has generally improved its product and acquired good talent. There are still a few posters taking pot shots and trolling, but generally the addition of Danielson and Punk last year brought a lot of attention, excitement, enjoyment and ultimately respect to AEW.

When I was a kid I went to a show at alumni gym in Lexington. It was Bruno Sammartino vs Pepper Gomez. It ended in a double DQ when Harley Race and the midnight express ran in and gave them Meltzer Drivers.

thats the dumbest thing a fan can say: oh you watch the WWE.

I don’t like either, lol. If I didn’t do it for my job, I wouldn’t have a clue as to half the people on their rosters were.

I still remember Dixie Gulas bragging how it’s going to be like “old school/Mid South,, blah”….but when I heard their roster, I knew it was a lie.

And I can accept there’s goofiness in wrestling. When I started, if there was 10 segments, 8 or 9 would be serious with the 1 or 2 be goofy.

now it’s the opposite, lol. Do you want to sit thru 9 segments of silliness to see Danielson?

Probably meant it in regard that they will have actual wrestling on their programming instead of children's games.
