CI Wrestling Thread #56

I sat and watched the Billy Madison Academia decathalon the other night and thought 1 thing. I bet Randy Orton, who has been a part of some great wrestling, is sitting in that chair wondering WTH are we doing?
This is my perception: I've always felt Randy Orton isn't "passionate" about wrestling, though he has ratcheted up his character work in the last few years. He is so naturally talented though that he can operate on cruise control, so to speak. I don't think he is doing a lot of pitches, he relies on creative. He comes in, does his job, and goes home. That's why IMO he laughed his butt off when they played Shane's music at RR in the wrong spot, rather than get angry or panic, because he's doing his job, delivering his lines, performing in the ring and getting paid, it wasn't his f@ckup so he really doesn't give a crap.

I liked Moxley with Punk. It brings my Danielson, Punk, Moxley group one step closer to existence. Bring in Joe when his NC is up? Yes!

Lee isn't the WWE style big guy. He does little guy stuff. He doesn't act like a monster. Wardlow powerbombing guys silly - very WWE big man. Lee being athletic? Nope.

At this point WWE is clearly not in the same industry as AEW. WWE is an almost mainstream entertainment company with a market capitalization of $4.2 Billion.

Their financials are fascinating, and impressive BUT their revenues have been LESS than expected the past two quarters.

I doubt that will cause them to improve the product.

My point? There are alternatives now. It will be really interesting to see what happens as the biggest stars' contracts expire.

If I were Khan, I would send Cena a blank check and make him say no.

There's only 1 person here who is of the opinion that Jay White is a jobber and his debut was not met with excitement. And that opinion is so very wrong that he must be trolling.
I can't say I knew him but I don't keep up with the indie or NJW stuff. I wouldn't however say just because I don't know him that he's a jobber just that I am not familiar with him which means nothing. 🤣

It's Thursday, you know what that means.

Dynamite did 1,129 million viewers and a .41 in the demo, number one for the evening.

Jay White has been back to NJPW for a short amount of time and he’s been pushed to the moon. The crowd knows who he is. I think home boy was watching on mute lol.

AEW TBS champion Jade Cargill is reportedly squarely on WWE's radar after a red-hot start to her wrestling career.

Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Pro Wrestling Podcast(h/t Michael Perry of Ringside News) said this week that he knows "for a fact" there are people in WWE who are interested in Cargill after seeing her progression in AEW.

Cargill has only been on television since November 2020, but she is already one of the top stars in the AEW women's division.

Jade has yet to lose a singles match in AEW, and she recently won a tournament to determine the first-ever TBS champion.

Cargill had a tryout with WWE back in 2019, but WWE didn't sign her, which opened the door for AEW to swoop in.

Seeing Jay White has me more excited then Keith Lee. But I much prefer NJPW talent then SOME guys who come from WWE. And I know.. Lee didn’t start in WWE, but I was never a big fan of his anyways. I’d love to see a ppv where AEW and NJPW compete

Crazy he’s only 29 and I think he became switchblade Jay white maybe 4 years ago? He’s come a long way in a short amount of time given he was green as grass in roh
He went on his excursion and came back a whole new wrestler. Just insane how much he learned while gone and how he’s brought it back to NJPW.

Rampage is on at 7:00 next Friday due to the NBA Rising Stars game.

Ronda and Charlotte both seem like they could care less about their match.

According to her, it was her choice to pick AEW over WWE, she turned down a contract offer from them because
  • She would be forced to relocate
  • They wanted her to basically neglect her child for WWE because WWE would be her family now
  • She didn't want to face the prospect of getting cut on a whim
  • She didn't want to sever all her sponsorships that were paying her more money than what WWE was offering her
After how well she has done in AEW, I can't imagine she would ever go to WWE unless they allowed her to go direct to the main roster and paid her top dollar. She's doing less work and, I'm assuming, making more money in AEW between salary and sponsorships.

He's the new human suplex machine
He really is. His swagger and approach in the ring is pretty fun. He’s smaller, but when I think about it… he’s about the size of some of the biggest and most popular MMA fighters.

He's an ex lacrosse player that has only been out of college for like a year. And he was a midfielder, so being lean is pretty crucial for playing that position. Those dudes run a ton and have to be pretty quick, so they can't be carrying around a ton of muscle mass. Most of the bulkier players you see in lacrosse are either goalkeepers, face-off specialists,, close defenders who don't get out in space a lot, or crease attackmen - which are kind of the equivalent to a traditional low post basketball player who isn't expected to do anything outside a few feet from the basket.

I know a few who played both football and lacrosse in college, and they always had to drop weight after football season then spend the summer bulking back up to get ready for football. Wikipedia says he's listed at 6-0, 201, which is on the high end for what you'd like to see a lacrosse midfielder to be. I imagine he will bulk up to maybe around 220 eventually, at that height that is probably about his peak if he is going to stay as lean as he is, looks like his body fat % can't be any higher than 5%.

I like how they aren't shoving him down ut throat like WCW did with Goldberg. I felt like WCW had him on every show every week for months and didn't have him beat anyone worth a shit for like half a year, just feeding us squash matches repeatedly. Then they had him win the US title and just kept giving us squash matches against mostly nobodies until he got to face Hogan for the WCW title, then all of a sudden he's beating the best you have in the company in a few minutes or less for WCW title defenses? Like come on man. Just felt like he never really earned his spot.

WWE will edit the contract signing segment that was taped this past Friday. The segment is scheduled to air this coming Friday night on SmackDown. WWE had to tape the show because the crew will be traveling to Saudi Arabia for the Elimination Chamber show.

As previously noted, Naomi and Ronda Rousey will team up to face Charlotte Flair and Sonya Deville at the Elimination Chamber show. As part of the final hype for that match, they did a contract signing segment that ended in physicality. During Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez asked Dave Meltzer if he had seen the clip of Flair botching the spot where she was supposed to hit her head on the table.

“I didn’t see the clip, I heard it was terrible. I heard they’re gonna edit it out, though,” Meltzer said.

Alvarez noted that the head slamming spot is critical to their angle so it would be tough to edit out the botch but Meltzer added, “they’ll figure out a way.”

One of the worst botches I have ever seen.
