CI Wrestling Thread #56

Man I just don’t know - punk not gonna put over the young guys just gonna try to get back to main event - not all these guys can main event or it’s gonna be like wcw 1998 when people refused to job - it’s exciting they got these new signings but people will get ancy if they aren’t pushed the way they want
I don't think you can have punk lose in Chicago in his first match back in seven years. The crowd might have torched the place after all of that build up or just had a ghost crowd for the rest of the show with tumble weeds rolling down the aisles.

I went a little heavy on the bourbon and edibles last night and passed out shortly after the show, but holy f what a PPV!

AEW is on fire right now. I’m a known Bucks detractor, but credit where credit is due for a fantastic title match (super kick/chops circle jerk was the only part of the match I didn’t love)

All the matches delivered. Crowd was hot. The only turd was the Big Show match, but its purpose was to serve as the palate cleanser between Punk/Darby and the main event.

Putting Punk over in his return was the 100% right call. He has to regain credibility as a top guy before he can do jobs. If not, he’ll come off looking like a WWE-booked washed up “legend”

The end was great. I’m kind of surprised they didn’t save Danielson’s debut for TV, but I’m not complaining. I’m super excited about the future of AEW. All the momentum is on their side.

Sure I get that but not like they haven’t run several shows in Chicago already

Never job a big name returnee in their hometown. Especially a babyface. Punk needs to win consistently at first. Then beating him will mean something more for the young guys.

Then again I guess they have to since it’s a bunch of super marks in the crowd

Did you see him try ufc he is kinda washed lol

I know. That’s exactly why he needs to be built back up as a credible contender in the predetermined world of pro wrestling.

Jobbing to Darby on his first night back would’ve been a terrible call. I see Punk as a main event talent capable of holding the world championship and being “the guy.” I don’t see Darby as a world title contender. He’s a great gimmick match/spot monkey type, but that guy isn’t going to carry the company.

Ya I just think they need another belt with all these signings - if omega loses the belt I’d like to see Cole get it he’s 32 and punk is 42?

I’d still be willing to bet my life Hangman beats Omega for the belt. Only question is whether it’s at Arthur Ash or Full Gear. Personally I’d go Full Gear. Gives Omega more time with the belt with Cole now in the Elite. Plus Full Gear was named after Hangman and it’ll be the one year anniversary of Omega beating Page in the #1 contenders match.

Btw, what did y’all think of Punk’s long tights? I thought they looked ok but it was distracting seeing him in long tights. I’d rather he go back to trunks.

Speaking of gear, I don’t know if anyone noticed but Omegas new gear was awfully similar to Hangman’s with what looked like a floral design on them like Page’s.

You’re probably right but Cole after Hangman then - it’s not like wwe where the belt flips every couple months - it’s more like njpw when ppl have decent title reigns

You can put a guy over in a loss by making him look good. No reasonable wrestling fan will say Darby didn’t come away looking good in that match. This isn’t WWE where they can’t figure out how to write or book anything worth a shit outside of title belt arcs. And even with title belt arcs they struggle.

I’m not a booker but being gone 7 years I would have had Darby win the first time and have punk say he was rusty and needs to train harder to get back to what he was in 2014
You don’t make his return match in his hometown and have him lose.

It was weird. I’ve never seen him wrestle in anything longer than basketball shorts.

I wanted him to go back to the shorts and whip out the Pepsi Plunge

Yeah, you can't have Punk lose right out of the gate, in Chicago no less. This ain't WWE. Also with AEW choosing to show records, Darby is something like 22-3 now. That's still damn good and the loss doesn't hurt him at all. You don't want Punk coming out only to see a 0-1 record pasted on your screen.

I don’t watch…only hear from Cornette, but from what I know, wouldn’t a guy like QT been great for Punks first win

that’s how it was always done: get a mid card with a “name”, but folks don’t care if he wins/loses and the good guy gets the big win and can start rolling from there

This is the best version I’ve found of Danielson’s new theme song. Pretty sure the one at All Out didn’t have singing and I hope that’s the one they keep using. The beat itself is awesome.

QT is hated by a lot of fans already. They’ve would have rioted if Punks first match was against him lol.

Admittedly I used the women’s battle royale to go get dinner so I missed it but Bryan and Dave said a chant broke out of “WE WANT TESSA!” followed by a dueling “NO WE DONT.”

Dave said that was a mirror of how people inside AEW feel with some people wanting to bring her in and others don’t. I’m guessing Khan is on the dont side or it would happen.

@CrittendenWildcat regarding your post about Joey Ryan, you could say Tessa and Scurll have fallen even more than Ryan. And the worst part is I think 2/3 and maybe even all 3 should still have jobs. Ryan has put out a ton of convos with him and his accusers and they tell a much different tale than what the accusers say. Most of the girls were doing everything they could to get him to sleep with them whenever he came to their city.

Some would argue that’s exactly what Darby is. He’s upper mid cars on the verge of becoming star, but not quite there yet. Plus people don’t care if Darby wins or loses that match because they still love him and he’s still gonna be crazy Darby.

That’s a match that, to me, could’ve been built up later to be huge. Why waste it on Punks first match. Yes, Darby is an upper mid card, but isn’t everyone picking him to be a breakout star unlike a guy like QT, who on one cares about.

I know the vast majority of AEW marks don’t care about long term storytelling…they just want to see a match, but I don’t know. It’s why I don’t watch. The mentality of fans and bookers today don’t make sense to me. It’s just cheering moves, etc.

Exactly they don’t have the patience for long term booking that’s why they hate everything from 70s/80s/90s

If you don’t think Punk will lay down when the time comes, you are silly. He is all about the business and while WWE made him like the others where he never wanted to lose, AEW isn’t that.

Punk, Bryan, Cage, Omega, Cole, Hangman.......they’ll all lose, they’ll all do tags, and they’ll all be made to look good win or lose.

You’re being intentionally obtuse. That’s like saying someone dressed as the Mario Bros is referencing this movie.

super-mario-bros.jpg
Sure. Okay.

Also doesn't change the fact they were dressed like morons.

Yeah, I just don’t get today’s fans

people would’ve went nuts for Punks first match anyway, so throw a goober like QT at him in his first match, instead it’s

we can build a long term match and feud with Punk and Darby…

AEW fans: no, it’s a match! Do it now

But it’ll really be special if you build it up over time…

Aew fan: no! It’s a match! Do it now

Or moves:
So, let’s do this match…so and so gets hurt, gets sympathy…

AEW fan: No! Do moves! Kick out of every move!

I don’t understand it

How do you know this isn’t going to morph into a long term rival for Punk? Or that in some way eventually Punk starts a stable(remember those) and Darby is in?

maybe right now you are the one not letting things play out?

Totally agree
And I wish I didn’t feel that way.

even as a kid in the 80s/90s, I hated wrestling video games. There was no storytelling, just moves.

I didn’t know what “selling” was, but I saw Ricky Morton doing something each week to get fans attention and empathy…and video games didn’t have that.

I hate the cliche, but it’s what I see now…

Exactly. This is exactly how Darby and Cody started. Just a one off match with not much build. They slowly made that into a big long term story and that’s what got Darby so over.

I disagree about AEW fans and long term stories. They’re the ones who love the long term stuff. It’s one of the things AEW does best.

It would be awesome if AEW finally decided to start putting wrestlers in stables.

Respectfully disagree. AEW fans don’t want anyone else but Hangman to be champ because of the 2 year story they’ve been telling with him and Kenny. Yes we’re excited to see Punk, Bryan, and Cole, but we only want Hangman to beat Kenny and kick out of the one winged angel because the story with him has been absolutely amazing.
