CI Wrestling Thread #56

They need to move on from Darby after All Out and have a heel go after Punk. Punk is much better when he has something to bitch about.

Really starting to wonder if FTR might actually be done after their next match.

It will be interesting when he posts the quarter hours but Dynamite did 1,172,000 viewers last night. I thought it would be higher and I wonder if people turned it off after Punk's segment.

They were number one in 18-49 by a decent margin and number one in males 18-49 by a huge margin with a .67 demo.

So basically a couple hundred thousand. I thought there’d be more as well. They’ll never say it, but inside, Tony has to be disappointed.

Outside of his pipe bomb promo his wwe career was nothing spectacular - right now he’s doing snarky promos the marks are eating up but at some point it’ll get stale - can only complain about your past transgressions so much - think people already have forgotten about Andrade - omega isn’t getting rid of that belt anytime soon
I know I’m a casual watcher, but I mean I know some people…but I remember the Twitter nerds were making this big deal about that Andrade being released. I had never heard anyone talk about him

Looking now, he’s a huge bust for AEW and we know Tony overpaid him as well.

Decided to watch a little bit of Summerslam 02 last night. Is it the greatest card in the history of Wrestling?

Brock vs Rock
HHH vs HBK
Flair vs Jericho
Mysterio vs Angle
Edge vs Guerrero
Van Dam vs Benoit

Sure it might be a tad dismissive but he had a mitb cash in/Cena/pipe bomb promo/straight edge - you could make the argument Daniel Bryan’s wwe stint was more impactful - single handedly had the fans in the palm of his hand - single handedly had a wm main event changed despite Vince not giving him a fair shake

Well, that's good, because DB's big debut in AEW is up next.

Personally, I was not in favor of bringing CM Punk back, imo he's been gone too long to move the needle much, and the failed MMA attempt lowered his value. But TK decided to bring him back, and so hoping it works out for the best for all involved.

Can't DB jump whenever he wants, his contract expired iirc so I don't think he has to wait? I think I just read that DB's contract expired on April 30th. But they are waiting until the New York show in September.

Also, I think Jericho's contract is up at the end of the year, after his match with MJF he'll be taking a break and touring with Fozzy. I don't know that he has much in-ring work left in him, he was looking pretty slow and old during the 5 labors. He's a guy who could play AEW and WWE against each other to try to get the best deal, but if he's not an in-ring talent I don't think WWE would have a place for him, whereas AEW is already transitioning him to commentary.

Correct. DB has no non compete clause. His contract expired. Same with Adam Cole.

I have heard guys say they can't take off to be with their families very long because when they come back their spot may be taken. That must suck as a father or mother in the business.
Fun story, but Hangman graduated college at 19 years old. He already had his associates degree while still in high school.

First off, gross.

Secondly, I'm not as familiar with the roster as I should be, but it seems the only buildup we're going to get between these two is that it's Punk's first match in forever so watch. I guess that's all you need here, but honestly, Punk should have been attacked on his way to the ring last night. It's been done a million times, but doing that puts major heat on his opponent (shouldn't be Darby), ruins the moment for Punk and the fans there, and shows that perhaps Punk is a step slower and a little too focused on talking to the fans and making them happy. The next time we see Punk, he's giving a pissed off "now you have my attention" promo.

Can I be Booker of the Year now?

...and there's another talent AEW will likely be signing and debuting soon. There's a great deal of talent available on the market right now, but AEW has a lot of great talent already. They have an air traffic control problem, they have to land all these talents and give them room to debut and get a proper push, while still handling the current roster and continuing to develop and elevate them. It's a tall order.

Yup exactly it’s kinda like Calipari with his loaded rosters - gotta try to keep everyone happy and the egos in check

And this is where factions come into play and help a lot. Just like the platoon system if we’re comparing to Cal.

Does Cash Wheeler have a lawsuit against AEW? Was it negligence that the hook was protruding from the ringpost? Or was it just a freak accident?

Did you all see at least according to him AEW was bringing in Gangrel for the show last night.
Probably to do something Brood related with Christian.
After Edge did his thing at Summerslam they scrapped the idea.

was that supposed to be a thing with Edge or a one off?

TK said that there were so many punk t shirt orders that they had to buy up every single ringer style shirt in America to fill the order. Also said Punk has already paid for himself. So like I figured, the shirt sales alone already covered punks contract. Just insane.

Gangrel was supposed to be on Dynamite last night during the Omega/Christian segment. I guess as a poke at Christian and the Brood. Their music guy said he had a special track made for it already. Guessing it would be very similar to the Brood theme. But once Edge did the brood stuff the last couple weeks AEW decided to scrap the idea.

I know we have people who are hard headed in here but legit would love to know what he expected the ratings to be with punk

Also on Chicago radio they are offering packages for next weeks dynamite/rampage/all out and of course promoting the crap out of cm punk

Here's the breakdown and as expected folks tuned out after Punk's segment. As it turns out OC and Hardy has the highest rated segment.

I know one thing - Illinois is putting an indoor mask mandate starting Monday 8/30 so guessing that requires folks in attendance to wear a mask for 3-4 hours? Wonder if people will opt out and sell on secondary market?

Who knows. He might have expected a bit more but I know for a fact he’s been thrilled with everything else (promotion/sales and so on). He’s said as much.

I don’t like the wwe or aew, so I have my biases, but honest question to you and a few others

How long will the novelty of CM Punk last before fans that tuned in to see him think the rest of aew is dreck and will tune back out.

In an honest estimate, he’s potentially giving them 300-400k viewers…will they last?
I think it depends on how he is booked. I doubt they keep everyone from his debut, and there will be some who only catch Punks stuff online. But if they treat him as a big deal, and put him in proper feuds, people will still tune in for him- regardless of the other stuff on the card. Punk has always had a decent following of fans.

I am curious who they put him up against after the Darby match though. I personally want to see him vs Omega.

Novelty always wears off. Everything new is exciting. Then it gets old. I used to like Punk in 2011-2013 ish but his whiney shtick is old to me.

Vince reportedly done with indie wrestlers and going for athletes that look the part.

He’s also done with indy vets (some of wh they’ve never used correctly). He also does not want to sign any new talent over 25 or so. He wants all young guys that can be molded into WWE-style robots.

I see it both ways. Going for all jacked up green guys will make the product feel mass produced and canned. On the flip side, if a wrestler looks like I could kick his ass, I have a hard time taking them seriously.

You need a few 200 lb or less guys who can really go in the ring, but you don’t need 30. Same goes for giant steroid hulks and big monster super heavyweights.
