CI Wrestling Thread #56

Triple H returning from the quad injury is probably the loudest I've ever heard. Then you have Rock coming back to Raw as host of Mania, and of course Punk's entrance at Money in the Bank. All subjective though. Tonight was a special moment for wrestling, and I LOVED that Punk didn't mention WWE or refer to them as "New York."
He was definitely skirting that line of just bashing WWE and trying not to talk about em too much.

I mean outright by name. I think when the rumors began, some either expected or wanted Punk to come out and mention Paul, Vince, Stephanie, etc. He swerved and brought up ROH instead while essentially saying that his next venture wasn't a healthy experience. Makes sense though. We got vengeful Punk after he left. Now we're getting grateful and happy Punk.

What was a bigger pop? This pop was 7 years in the making lol
Dude could you imagine what it would have been like if people had no idea he was coming? It might not have been able to get any louder, I don’t know, but people would have seriously lost their shit. They went nuts and everyone knew it was coming.
That was amazing!!!
They are even showing the clips on ESPN and they never show AEW stuff.
Funny you say that, one of the daytime espn shows have had Darby and the YoungBucks on their show a couple months ago. But yeah it’s crazy seeing sportscenter tweet the video.

Damn it! I had such a day I totally forgot about this tonight.

I’ve rewatched it 3 times already.

Damn I’m all in on AEW. Won’t miss another show.

No need to compare that pop to all timers, because it’s the biggest wrestling pop in a few years I’m sure!

Austin’s music hitting during the Rock-Mankind “butts in seats” match created probably the gold standard pop. For those of you who weren’t watching back then, you can’t imagine how over he was. I was in Rupp for the post-Survivor Series Raw and it sounded like a damn jet was taking off when his music hit.

I was there that night too. I’d describe that pop as the equivalent of UK going on a 16-0 run capped by a run out dunk to go up by 20 on UL as far as Rupp crowds go.

  • CM Punk: Well executed. Personal opinion: CM Punk would never have come to AEW when it was new. They were nobodies, no track record, I'm sure he's heard come-ons from every nobody backyard fed in the USA to come and move the needle for them. But I think he really has been impressed with what AEW has built in so little time and the commitment to developing talent and building the business.
  • Was this the actual order of live presentation? I mean, did they really follow CM Punk with Jurassic Express vs. Matt Hardy + Private Party? People would probably leave.
  • Jade Cargill looks like if Venus or Serena Williams tried wrestling. And...that's a squash. Is that what I should expect for the remainder?
  • Great promo by Mox.
  • #hottake: If the Toyota lady did porn, I'd pay for that.
  • Mox is poised to get launched into the stratosphere. DG is a nice bridge, but we need...yeah, tap.

Toyota lady? And I really like Daniel Garcia. He’s a good technical wrestler and reminds me a lot of Zack Saber Jr

Surprised nobody has mentioned the dude in the Scooby Doo costume at Dynamite (saw him during Sting's match and had to rewind).

Punk's debut pop was LOUD.

Mr. Kicker is thin, is he cut?

Want to see him. I've missed him

lol no.

It will make the smarks happy (who were already watching), the type of neckbeards who were chanting seven years later to try and be obnoxious. Won’t do jack for mainstream/casuals.

Punk is a douche. Anxious to see him get shit on when someone mentions his UFC crap.
Lol

I’m guessing this is the week where Cornette starts to hate Punk and calls him a sell out and says he’s disappointed in him and blah blah blah because anyone who does something Jim doesn’t like is immediately dead to him.

lol. Oh a Chicago crowd of smarks cheered for Punk? Yeah totally huge surprise. You’re a child.

It makes AEW more exciting but will do nothing for wrestling in general or super “mainstream” more than a simple “Punk debuted.” It’s new. That will go away.

He broke 2 websites this morning and he was the number 1 trending topic on Twitter worldwide for 15 hours straight. Try again.

Punk back? **** yeah. I'll be watching AEW on a regular basis now. And they probably bringing in the American Dragon Daniel Bryan and Adam Cole too? AEW going for the WWE jugular.

Love how he shit on WWE without having to say a single word about them. Left professional wrestling in 2005 when he left ROH lol. ROH before NXT started raiding all their talent left and right was ****ing awesome.

It seems like you don’t like Punk’s politics and are projecting bad takes as a coping mechanism.

Punk’s debut in AEW was the best wrestling moment of the last five years. Easily.

Outside of Cena, there hasn’t been a guy as over as Punk who didn’t work in the Attitude Era since Punk left the business. Closest would be 2013 Daniel Bryan.

Rollins? nope
Reigns? Lol. No
McIntrye? Nah
Becky Lynch? Close-ish. But no.

I’m not even a Punk mark. But to deny yesterday’s debut was a big deal is silly.

I’m not one to promote hyperbole, but AEW is getting hotter and more compelling by the week, while WWE is as sterile as its been since 1995-96. I’m watching SummerSlam tonight, but it’s not their best card.

Speaking of the only match worth seeing is Cena/Roman

is Sasha/Belair still happening?

The summer of Cena is coming to an end. Time to bring in the Rock. Goldberg's contract is coming to an end. I wonder how much Vince will have to pay Brock to return after the Rock's short time is over. Short timers just keep getting older. How much longer can Vince keep this up?

Corny and Brian just sent me the punk segment for the show. I’ll post tonight, but definitely check it out. You all will enjoy

So I’m glad punk is back and all but wwf made him the star he is - so it’s kinda funny he trashed them b/c he wouldn’t have had his mma career or exposure without them.
That's true for so many guys. I understand both sides of it as well.

On one hand they get watered down and controlled to a point that it frustrates them.

On the other hand they get the greatest exposure and fantastic money.

Plus - every one of them knew the drill when they signed the dotted line.

I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else but I’d swear I heard a f** you Vince chant during Punk’s promo.

Anyone else catch that?

This is different then before. Before it was just people who liked wrestling getting more wrestling options. People had their allegiances, sure… but now with social media and knowing Vince is the owner… things have drastically changed. People HATE Vince. People HATE KHAN. What was a joke about Wednesday night wars has basically turned into that. It’s not even about the enjoyment of the products anymore, but more about spite of the other promotion

I went back and listened it was after he said he was never going to get better staying in the same place that got him sick in the first place. I’m about 95% sure that’s what they were saying.

Again - I’m glad punk is back - and I have it recorded and haven’t watched the promo - but if he really said he left wrestling because he was “sick” in the middle of a pandemic and mental health crisis probably wasn’t the best choice of words not to mention Roman Reigns had to leave because he was sick fighting cancer - so for someone who acts very acute to his surroundings and acts very “smart” probably could have used better words but obviously he was playing up to his audience
