CI Wrestling Thread #56

I love Bryan Danielson and Punk.

Not to disparages, but how much do they move the "mainstream" needle?

A fraction of what it'll move when Rock comes back to build towards his Wrestlemania match with Roman.

I'll be extremely interested in Punk and Bryan but if they just fall in line with what AEW has been doing I won't be interested anymore.

Entrance music?

Taz - War Machine
Kevin Von Erich - Stranglehold
Road Warriors - Iron Man
Midnight Express - The Chase
Flair - Thus Spake Zarathusta

And many, many more.

always love a von Erich shoutout.

in 88, Kerry was showing up on Jarrett CWA cards often (here in Louisville) and my god…the girls he was even pulling in at the time. I couldn’t imagine the tail he was pulling in in 1984

Will Kahn license Cult of Personailty for Punk if he comes?
If Punk wants it then he will have it. Tony has shown he’s willing to pay to buy music rights.

Fav Entrance Themes:
• Razor Ramon & Hall’s tna theme as well.
• HBK - Sexy Boy
• DX
• NWO - Rockhouse
• Bullet Club - Shot Em
• Kenny Omega - Battlecry
• MJF’s theme
• Road Warriors - What a Rush

Those are just off the top of my head. There’s way more I’m sure.

Forgot to add Hangman Pages theme and Four Horseman theme.

Small shot at Vince as well.

I know we're not talking WWF vs WCW here, but with the moves AEW is making, Dynamite may get a higher rating than Raw and Smackdown when these guys debut. It may only last a week, but I honestly didn't see that happening.

*Biggest problem AEW is facing now is being an air traffic controller and properly landing each of these new acquisitions in the company. So many new people being brought in that some of them are bound to get lost in the noise (like possibly Black and Andrade).

*Nobody mentioned Thunder Rosa is signed with AEW as of yesterday.

It’s true - since Christian was the “big signing” they’ve already had Andrade/black debut and they’ll obv be more

With all due respect, IMHO Punk and DB are more vanilla midgets than needle pushers. But if they have both signed with AEW, it is sending a message to the wrestling world that AEW is a more attractive employer for wrestlers. You won't be micromanaged, you won't be blocked from opportunities in other wrestling organizations, and you will be working with people who want you to succeed and aren't going to future endeavor you like you are some sort of factory worker that you lay off when times are tough. You are the captain of your own ship.

And I take no offense to what you’re saying, but remember we’re talking about two different eras. Two VASTLY different eras. We don’t have the Austin’s, halls, Nash’s, hogan’s, etc. As far as today’s wrestling goes, I think they’re the closest things to Nash and Hall.

Rock
Cena
Brock

Danielson might get some kids and casuals, but how many of them actually know Daniel Bryan IS Bryan Danielson? ( I'm assuming AEW wants to maximize ratings and viewership. I don't think you do that in the US just through adding quality. They need more sizzle, they have plenty of steak.)

As long as they have enough room on the roster and the shows - it's awesome. They will have a great roster. Especially if they cut ties with the bottom 10% of their roster (whoever that is).

Hell, I hope they really work with Corgan and NWA. If they can establish a loose system that allows guys to more freely come and go to avoid getting stale it would be close to perfect.

I think the coming and going part is exactly why Mox signed and reportedly DB. They wanna fight other people around the world and other promotions. They do it for the passion and like you said, they don’t want to be bored.

Well DB and punk have that indy mentality from all their previous comings and goings before wwe so can definitely see the appeal aew/njpw has for them

Well that’s his name and stuff so
I remember on one of the Conrad Thompson pods, he mentioned being backstage and seeing Taker. He said he really didn't know how to address him and out of respect he wasn't going to call him Mark like they're buds, so he ended up just saying "Mr. Taker". Mr. Taker sounds ridiculous, but in that world I guess it makes sense.

I keep seeing this ukwildcaT on f/b but can’t post the video - I know he worked in Memphis quite a bit as the spellbinder and another gimmick but this must have been when I wasn’t watching wwe - also remember Doug Gilbert was in the Royal rumble once

“ On July 16, 1995 WWF Wrestling Challenge aired from the Marts Center in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. The ill-fated Phantasio made his WWF debut, taking on Tony DeVito. Phantasio (real name Harry Del Rios) was a babyface who’s gimmick was a magician who wore a black and white mime mask (which he handed to a young fan sitting at ringside) that revealed matching facepaint when removed and performed tricks on his way to the ring and during the match. He defeated DeVito by sneaking up from behind, and magically pulling out his boxers allowing him to roll up DeVito for the victory. After the match, he magically removed the boxers of referee Earl Hebner. Though Phantasio never again appeared on WWF TV, he did wrestle a match against Rad Radford at a house show in a victorious effort.”

I just saw this. Well the bug has bit me. I’m bought in 100% that DB AND Punk are going to AEW. This is just simply insane to me. Glad I bought my Cincy tickets. May be the first time in 7yrs we see punk in a wrestling ring cutting a promo.

Punk posted the old Chicago Bulls intro theme on his Instagram yesterday. Several weeks ago he posted a thing or two that most people ignored but some hardcores believed it was clues to his return. So he may have signed weeks ago.

BTW on Impact, Jay White said the Good Brothers weren’t good enough for the BC anymore and denied their re-entry. They had Chris Bey come out and attack them and gave Bey a Bullet Club shirt. I think he fits them very well.
