CI Wrestling Thread #56

I never understood why Brian Christopher and Jerry Lawler kept aloof about their father/son relationship, especially in the era of blending real life storylines into gimmicks. To my knowledge, they never worked a storyline together or ever acknowledged each other as father/son on air.

Taz is kinda doing that with Hook, but will at least acknowledge him as his son if it gets brought up. It’s pretty evident that he won’t be a part of a program with him, though.
I remember Vince teased him about it on commentary and Jerry would always deny it.

I think the Lawler/Christopher thing was going back to the Memphis days where Lawler didn't want the women fans to know that he had kids. And then by the WWF days I believe their relationship wasn't great so it just kind of worked out to keep the kayfabe going

Pat McAfee will be on College Gameday this year after saying earlier he wasn't.

The NBA just announced the new TV deals and Warner Brothers will not be a part of it after next year. ESPN/ABC/NBC and Amazon.

As you mentioned earlier Happy Blood and Guts Day

Blood and Guts Match: Team AEW - AEW Champion Swerve Strickland, ROH Champion Mark Briscoe, Darby Allin and The Acclaimed vs. The Elite - Kazuchika Okada, Jack Perry, Hangman Page and The Young Bucks
Chris Jericho vs. Minoru Suzuki.
Hikaru Shida vs. Britt Baker.
MJF to appear
Mariah May to appear

I agree on Gameday but I actually think he and Cole do a very good job on Raw. They have great chemistry.
Honestly, I don’t watch Raw very much but I’ve heard him several times and think his personality is much better on the wrestling shows than game day. He’s fine on WWE but game day is another story entirely for me.

We're getting MJF vs Ospreay II in London in a few weeks...which could've been I with a more epic feel. Now we know Will is getting the win and tying this up 1-1. I do like MJF being bizzaro Cody with this new American title while being the villain though. For his entire career all he needs to do is channel is inner Cody and inner Punk and he's golden.

I'm begging these dopes to end this takeover storyline soon. It's been floundering since spring. AEW is in no danger of an EVP takeover and we don't know the end goal. And what is this Team AEW? The champion, Darby, The Acclaimed, and Briscoe. What a random mash-up fighting for...I dunno...the right to continue having a free and fair AEW?

Fans lie when they say AEW doesn't tell stories. They do. It's just they've got maybe 2 out of 10 stories that are decent.

The last time I saw Joe Hendry was about four years ago in ROH as Dalton Castle’s decidedly less charismatic tag partner/foil.

But I hear his name everywhere now, so he’s clearly gotten over. I would not have guessed that back then.

Briscoe was the man of that match. Maybe I have a soft spot because of his brother’s tragedy, but that guy can pull off a poor man’s Cactus Jack.

Good pre-match promos, has that “crazy” look to him, known as a brawler, not scared to scrap with anyone and take punishment. He’s what fans wish Eddie Kingston was. I say keep pushing him and see what happens.

Edited to say that Okada has never looked worse. He was clearly uncomfortable and his timing was terrible.

I'll watch any War Games match. The WWE version is too PG, as if the cage really isn't needed while the AEW version is too silly and backyard. That was my first time seeing Okada in a while too. I know he's uber skilled but he looked slow. There were a couple spots where he got hit and fell over like a 65 year old. You can tell his plan is to coast in AEW and just say 'bitch' occasionally.

I'll give AEW credit for the continuous Swerve/Page feud too. That's their Triple H/HBK ongoing feud that's going to last years. Those guys will end up having 8 or 10 matches together.

Enjoyed Blood and Guts and most of Dynamite last night. I like Suzuki but Jericho needs to go away for a while.
I know they said afterwards it was a gimmicked chair but I could have done without the unprotected chair shot.

Have to agree Okada didn't do much and looked kind of out of place last night.

Will be curious if under the new regime WWE War Games gets a little more violent.

Enjoyed the show last night.

I really liked the May Toni segment, especially when May turned around and saw Toni, she didn't do the usual cowardly heel thing and sprint to the locker room, but she went right at her, showing how much those two hate each other now. I liked that little detail.

I could be in the minority, but that Jericho/Suzuki match was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. Two past their prime geezers chopping each other for 8 minutes is what I saw.

I’ve always thought strong style was shit because if I wanted it to look shitty and actually hurt the other guy, I’d watch MMA.
Maybe it’s me.

Everything else was fine. I fast forwarded through some of blood and guts because excessive weapons and stunts get old to me quickly.

Damn AEW has a lot of titles. I mean I thought WWE does, well it does, but AEW even has more.
If they were going to do that, then make it (each title) mean something different.
For example, have a "lightweight" title (for guys <220 or whatever # seems appropriate) and a "heavyweight" title. Have an "over 40" (or 45 or whatever age you want) title. You could even have a "beginner" or "under 25" title, or maybe that is what NXT is for for WWE. Have a "steroid free" title [laughing] .

The post has now been deleted. But if you search the interwebs you can find it.

Dynamite- 786,000 and a .27- down slightly from last week.

Counting network and cable 29 million watched the Biden address.

- Somebody get Chicago Man a bodybag. There's no comeback for that now deleted tweet.

- I don't buy Punk trying to restructure his contract. That "report" in a roundabout way made it seem like he wants to take over NXT in the near future when it's not his call and he still wants to wrestle for a few more years. He may be arrogant but he's not coming back and suddenly calling corporate shots. That site also claimed Buddy Matthews couldn't wait to get back to WWE...and he just re-signed with AEW.

- Decent rating for Dynamite. It's not great considering where they were this time last year but they're holding steady and keeping viewers. Next week will be a "regular" show but hopefully they can keep slowly climbing. Some really did have the Biden excuse ready though if the rating was a little low. Yes, 26 million watched but I didn't believe a wrestling show rating would tank because the president gave a 20 min. speech at the same time.

- Speaking of All In and London, Nick Khan and Triple H met with the mayor of London today. Guess we're getting WM in Wembley sooner rather than later.

Dave Meltzer is catching heat online for falsely reporting that CM Punk signed a short term deal with WWE and it's expiring soon:

"There's a story going around about CM Punk renegotiating his contract and it's really (being) overblown.

What happened was CM Punk came in and they had a short term deal which is expiring now. There are rollovers in the deal, so there's not like a hurry that they have to sign him. The deal does go longer, but they knew all along that right around now they'd be renegotiating deals."

Both PWInsider and WrestleVotes report that CM Punk signed a 3 year deal with WWE that goes through 2026. Here are their statements:

PWInsider: "CM Punk and WWE signed a three-year deal the night he returned in Chicago at Survivor Series.

The deal would carry him through November 2026, not counting any time tacked on for when he was out rehabbing his Royal Rumble injury.

The two sides are currently discussing a new contract, but WWE are the ones who approached Punk about working out a new deal."

WrestleVotes: "WWE is extremely happy with CM Punk’s attitude, commitment, drawing power, and big merchandise sales.

It’s safe to say they want to continue this momentum for as long as possible."

Fatu has done more to deserve the summerslam title shot than Solo - one day he’s getting that title shot though.
A higher up is clearly noticing Fatu as the announcers basically only talk about him when they have a match right now. The other two barely ever get a mention.
