Cal, why can't you just enjoy the win?

Because he was literally asked a question about Reed's performance.

His quote might as well be equal to something like

"I was going to kill him for that turnover but the kid sure knows how to win"

That's a compliment.

Italian households are filled with that type of rhetoric.
After Reed's performance why say something negative to begin with , when answering the question ? hmm ? There were dozens .. yes dozens of poor plays , and he picks out this one . Why ? Because he's Italian ? LOL

In context it wouldn't make sense to talk about the dozens of plays.

He was asked a question about Reed so his response was about Reed.

My Italian quote was specifically in referring to how Cal likes to start a comment with what people take as a negative when it's really not.

My grandma would do this all the time in NY and so would everyone else. It's literally a term of endearment.

Might explain why my KY family never got along with my Italian family.

I actually made some comments without even listening to the presser , so I went back and listened , IMO it was worse , or at least as bad , as the OP says it was . The dude literally mocked EVERYONE -- he mocks those who might disagree with him as retarded ... it's not funny . If you are 38-0 ..its freaking funny .. newsflash to the benny running the show the last 6 years .. you are not funny , losing isnt funny , none of this is funny . Does anyone in Admin have the nuts to bring this guy in and tell him to quit insulting the fan base ? That a HOF coach ( ha ha) should have thick skin and be able to be questioned ?? Does he need reminded of the St whoever's and the OMG I could on forever . 3 game rump arena losing streak with a NBA roster ... but he cant be questioned ? And heaps praise on DJ ? I only made it about 3 minutes into the 8 minutes , I couldnt take it any longer . I can sense the resentment . Its obvious . Well not as much as I resent him.

Cal can’t coach late game situations and is on the hot seat. He is arrogant and cannot stand the fact that Reed has stolen his thunder
I hope he cracks like a ripe watermelon .. but you are dead on balls accurate , He's feeling the heat ( thank God) and he hated ... HATED , Reed got all the glory . I didnt hear a coach happy for a player in that press conference . I didnt hear a coach happy at all.

I think it’s obvious there is some pressure building on Cal about Reed and Dilly. Seems like he tries to justify starting DJ quite a bit.
When he is defending DJ to the media, it is really the NBA he is talking to. He talked about him shooting 40 % from three way too many times. For Cal it is NBA or bust for DJ. And for us that could be bust.

In fairness, Reed obviously had a great overall game, but his buzzer beater did bail us and him out from under a handful of mistakes he made by trying to do too much. The long, Ill advised three point attempt when we should have burned some clock. Giving up the three pointer by not pushing his man out of range, the obvious long pass that resulted in a TO that lead to them tying the game. Those were enough to make any coaches blood boil. But Reed is still just a Freshman and still learning. Cal didn't pull him from the game over those mistakes, he let him play through them and it paid off in the end.

Same reason all his haters can't enjoy a win either. Most have already posted in this thread.

Tough road win against a legit team who played good. Yeah, let's pick apart the coach I hate's press conference instead of enjoying it...

The agenda posting is getting so old on here.

Cal was upset about a pass 100% of basketball coaches should be upset about.

Played Reed 35 minutes and ran the offense for him when he was hot, yeah, must really hate that guy.

And before we go there, yes Reed should be starting, Dilly too.

As soon as he sits down he has his Billy Gillispie moment of "This isn't the University of Reed Sheppard," blasting the LITERAL HERO OF THE GAME for throwing a long pass. I swear if I was Jeff I would tell my son to declare at the end of the season and get the hell out from under this sh**show of a coach. The guy clearly can't STAND the fact that Sheppard outplays ALL of his favorites on the team. (And him NOT starting Sheppard will come back to bite us in the tournament. We'll get down early to the wrong team and that'll be curtains.)

The very NEXT comment he goes off on the fans for him not calling timeout. And then he blasts the fans for saying he should foul with 16 seconds to go. "STOP! JUST LET ME COACH THE TEAM!" He was PISSED.

The man is very thin skinned, to start off with. He's very aware of fan criticism and he doesn't like it.

But here's the thing. You calbois are always whining about people finding things to be concerned about after the game.

"Why can't you just enjoy the win, for like an hour, Cal?" Maybe you bois should direct that question to him for a change.
Can UK fans just enjoy a hard fought win? Reed played an amazing game. But, he made a bad decision on the long pass against the press, also...let their hottest player come down and get in rhythm pull up at the 3 point line and drain a 3, knowing that is what they had to have. He should have met him as he came across mid court. We know CAL always has these kids backs. He knows Reed had a hell of a game, and he has to "deflate" somewhat for the sake of Reed and other players. This win was a TEAM effort.

Your post shows that you have it out for Coach Cal. Embrace the win, Cal has this team playing much better at the right time of year. Cheer our Team on and the Coach.....sheeesh!

I watched the press conference and agree with the OP. DJ did have a good game all things considered. He made some threes and gave the ball up on the last play.

But grousing about the fans or a bad pass by Reed isn't really a good look in this context.

Congratulate MSU for battling and dang near stealing it at the end. Congratulate your own guys for growing and making plays to win an all-out war. But that isn't the Cal of today.

Thanks for jumping in, Cal.

How many burner accounts you got, Cal?

I've been on Cal a lot lately myself but the OP is a die hard Cal hater and the post is full of holes in regard to what Cal actually said. Let's enjoy a very good win and hold off on the hatred for another time. I was so happy with this comeback win on the road and I just want to enjoy it in a positive way.

EXACTLY!!!! Excellent post!!💙 Exactly what I have said in a couple of other posts. I should not be listening to him because he makes me want to puke. It's early and I'm tired...been up all night not feeling well. BUT, Cal is just disgusting. He is so obvious about his feelings about players. I've said before that I don't think Cal expected Reed to be this good. He has to play him a lot now or otherwise, it would be obvious to everyone how he feels. And that just pisses him off bad!!

I wouldn't blame Reed for leaving. I don't care if we win the Championship, I still want Cal gone. (I do want to win the Championship!!! But even if we do....)

Reed,.if you are reading this...THANK YOU for your play, your positive attitude and your humbleness. You are a credit to your family, your teammates, your school and the State of Kentucky.

100% a lie about Cal "putting down" Reed.

He said he wanted to choke Reed and then praised him and said he plays to win and is steady and then joked about some things and said that he was joking because Reed was in the back of the room.

You are either blinded by hate or lying.... Or both

He has a clear agenda. People with an agenda will bend the narrative to fit their agenda. He, like many posters hate Cal more than they love UK.

All I know is this was a Q1 win on the road and this very well could have moved us up a seed line. That is literally all that matters.

Oh and I don't think anyone needs to White Knight for Reed. Trust me man, the kid can handle whatever his coaches say to him. He has been coached hard his whole life. Not that Cal is too hard on him or anything. But he's fine. I bet he would get a kick out of people trying to stick up for him.

I bet his mom will be harder on him about that TO than Cal ever will as well.

I have not listened to the post game but if that's what he said then folks need to grow a set. Too many snowflakes

It was fine for Cal, but I continue to be fascinated by his role as propaganda minister for DJ. Hard selling him to the league every time a mic is in his face.

I wonder if that’s all it is or if it’s also a confidence issue with DJ and Cal feels like he has to constantly pump him up.

He praised Reed for about 10 seconds in the entire press conference. He actually mentioned Wagner more, and he spent more time talking critically about Sheppard than he did positively.

And before someone says it was just a motivation tactic, they need to remember that Cal's done this with Sheppard a number of times. Meanwhile, DJ gets a couple baskets and Cal goes on for 8 minutes about how hard he's worked, how injured he's been, and how Cal still believes in him.

He did the same crap with Edwards before the 28 point breakout game.

He's like a dad whose kid (Sheppard) bring home a 95% on their test, and the dad immediately asks, "What could you have done to have received that 100%?"

Then the other sons (Edwards, Bradshaw, and Wagner) bring home 75% and 80% scores and the dad says, "We're going out to celebrate with pizza and ice cream tonight, boys!"
Reed will get plenty of love from the mainstream media for this game.
Nothing wrong with giving DJ a little love.

You got me , Reed almost cost us the game .. LOL you cant make this shit up
For as good of a game as he had, yeah, that TO could have very well cost us the game. It lead to them tying the score. Fortunately Reed was able to make the winning basket to avoid overtime.

then joked about some things and said that he was joking because Reed was in the back of the room.
I dont know how people can’t see this. He was smirking and glancing back at Reed the whole time. That’s not something you do to someone you hate, it’s a way to show endearment.

I think @azurricat2010 is on to something when he mentioned Cal being Italian. I’m from a big Italian family from the northeast. A lot of the way Cal says things would be right at home at my dinner table. The slightly sarcastic “criticism” about someone you love is a way to show endearment and isn’t an actual criticism.

Hate to be this guy, but you’re the same way.

Just enjoy the win. Who cares what a blowhard you hate has to say?

Some of yall are really oversensitive about Cal’s comments. Just tune him out. It’s what I did sometime around 2018.

Cal mentioned at the beginning and end of that presser that DJ was hitting 40% of his 3’s before his injury. He was 18/58 for 31%. Inflating his shooting percentage by 9% is pretty bizarre….DJ hasn’t been close to 40% at anytime this year.

The answer OP is two things:
1. Because he's Cal
2. Because he's obsessed with fan reaction and immediately starts his thought process with how to counter react that. In this case he knew the fan reaction would be over the top with their hometown darling Reed so he thinks its his job to tamp that down and at the same time protect DJ's psyche.

We were behind when he took the long three. We didn’t need to run clock, no matter what Jimmy Dykes said.

But we should have run offense to get a better shot than a rusher not in rhythm 25 foot heat check three. While I didn’t necessarily mind the shot because I think every 3 Reed takes is going in, it was a bad shot.

On the pre-game show Seth Greenberg make some comment about how “ the fans are crazy there but they are like a drug to Cal “ . What the hell does that even mean ? It stimulates him ? Is that what it takes for him to stay engaged and driven ? Does he feed off the “basketball bennies”?

I didn’t listen to the whole press conference but did hear the initial Reed comments and I’m not a Cal fan but he explained/recovered by saying Reed plays to win. No issues from me.

However the commentary regarding the timeout was juvenile, unprofessional and very derogatory. People bitch that some people cannot just enjoy a win. Well Cal is 100% in that bucket. He cannot resist taking shots at the fans.

Well, he wasn’t wrong. It almost cost the game after we were up nearly 10. It went down to 1 when #13 was hot as a firecracker from NBA range.
That is TOTALLY on Cal!!

Hubbard should have been denied the ball or doubled so he couldn't get it!!!

The same situation as the end of the Florida game where Cal ALLOWED their hot shooter to get the ball.

The errant Reed pass would not have even mattered had Cal not let Hubbard get those 3's!!!!
