That is a bit of exaggeration on how many kentucky kids most fans want on the team. (How about ONE)
Cal says he doesn't listen, then how does he know enough to comment?
I Luv ya Cal but sometimes ya say some wrong stuff.
8 is an exaggeration but Cal speaks in exaggerations and his concept isn't wrong.
We could 3 peat and then have a 10 loss season in year 4 with no seniors or Ky kids and that topic will come up.
Now my personal opinion is to go get the best talent in the class. The goal is to win games and talent wins games. But if it's between a Kyky Tandy, Shelvin Mack, Scotty Hopson and an out of state that are essentially equal then I like seeing Ky kids get a shot. If there is
roster space available and KY Mr. Basketball (or one of the top guys) is a
legitimate D1 player then offer him for bench depth and development. He may choose elsewhere for playingtime but this program may be more valuable than playing time elsewhere to him. A 2-3 star down to Wku and UK with no NBA dreams may choose to walk on at UK. (Sometimes we don't have the space and I get that)
The one thing that I would do differently if I were the Coach are the walkons that are essentially practice bodies and victory cigars. Less Sam Malone, Johnny David and Brian Longs and more Jarred Polson, Elisha Justice, Twany Beckham. There are kids all across the state who dream of wearing blue from the time they are knee high and if you're taking someone that'll likely never see the floor, then I'm of the opinion that those spots should be instate kids that idolize this program; some of which may turn into solid college players.
Here is the catch, all those guys listed above that aren't from KY are from the PA or NJ area and Cal is still staying true to who he is and helping his friends and communities that he has been a part of so I can't hate it too much because I can never fault Cal's loyalty and truly believe he is one of the most sincere coaches in CBB.
End of the day: give me the Jimmy and Joes first and foremost and
Just Win Baby.
