Cal reminds me of the Florida State coach in his last years. In their prime they ran juggernaut programs. At the end they were just CEOs who figured they could just win games on their personalities. Instead of talking about how his players could improve, Bowden would talk about their families. He'd say weird things like he booed his own kid Terry, assuming the media would just play along.

Denny Crum
Bobby Knight
(At least those two won multiple titles)

Football side
Bowden
Jimbo Fischer

Cal is a one title and then mediocre results for like ten years but the school just assumed each year the coach would rekindle the magic…but never happened. We drank the same water Louisville Indiana Florida st Texas Am etc did

Also, each of them had a support system of fans who equated "almost winning" with actually winning.

We still have fans that point to the 2017 and 2019 Elite Eights and the 2020 COVID year like they were national title seasons.
