Nothing wrong with using your high paid staff. Football coaches all use d coordinators! One or 2 of them will be better at it. Give them full authority.

You continually talk about “ demonstrated performance”. THIS 2024 team has demonstrated man to man defense is not suited for them. Add some zones. Matchup, 1-3-1 something that suits them Put in some zone press to use a bit.

Build up their confidence with another defense. As one guy said we are losing with the present d -we can lose without it so let’s try something different.

You’re a coach and a teacher. Do what you were hired to do. Help these kids excel. Teach. Delegate. Do what’s right for THIS 2024 UK team, You might not prefer a zone but your job is to help THIS one team get across the finish line.

I witnessed Coach K mid season switch to a matchup zone. Didn’t want to but did and got to a FF. He did what suited his team at that point to help them.

Get a 2nd d in! Your like a MLB pitcher with only 1 pitch.. easy to prepare for and beat.

We just aren’t good defensively. Demonstrated over and over.

Be like Saban - use coordinators. Use another defense. It’s not rocket science. The players know the zone concept. It doesn’t have to be perfect,

Gonzaga was 3—14 on 3s but scoring every trip Vs the man,
Adjust. Give them something to think about and make them adjust. Take the high screen and dribble penetration away and go side to side. Put some doubt in their mind.

Do something to show us and the team you’re thinking trying and making moves to help THIS 2024 UK team be it’s best. Pleaseee!

Go back to the small ball lineup to start games and set our tempo. Mix in some zones. I think our players have no confidence in the man to man. Give them a lifeline!

Cmon coach. Use your assistants. Delegate to an assistant that has past experience with zones and a zone press.

Obviously you are utilizing Coach Welch on offense.

With a better defense you will be right there and I think the fan discourse will slow if we see you making moves to help THIS group!

Remember, in Cal's first ten years his team were some the best defensively in the country. I guess he forgot how to coach defense.

That’s what I don’t get. It’s obvious from my last 2 weeks of posts that I’m over Cal—the Cal UK has now. But if Cal would manage the program effectively and bring in good assistants that specialize AND LISTEN TO THEM, he would be unreal. It sure seems as though Cal has just placed himself on an island recently and using his position to reward old friends.

He did bring in Welch and cannot deny the results. If he did the same for the D or to gameplan, he could be so strong running this program. I just don’t think his ego will allow him to do this.

It’s a personnel problem. Physically not suited to the man.

Mix in another defense that might suit them better and put them in a more confident stage of mind.

It is what's so weird about this. Cal is a very solid defensive coach, we've seen it almost every year. And then the one season we try and tackle our offensive issues, we now lack in defense.

I think a lot of these guys just aren't very coach-able. Still making the same silly mistakes like losing their man over and over, Not communicating with who has who, not boxing out, not playing hard on defense,

He's been trying to pound a square peg into a round hole for years...he doesn't have elite athletes with great speed and length to recover...yet that won't stop him...

He's always relied on a massive discrepancy in sheer talent to compensate for his lack of in game coaching and strategy...he's washed!

Why did Cal always need a shot blocker in the middle? Because his guys were constantly getting burned driving to the basket. He needed an eraser to make up for that. we haven't had an eraser in forever and it shows because our defense has been terrible for several years in a row now.

This is the correct answer, instead of actually trying to coach ie figure out a game plan, he relies on talent. When that doesn’t work he’s done for.

Except for our bigs who can't guard anybody one on one in the post(and every other coach would double the post in a similar situation), our players are plenty athletic enough to defend. Saying we just don't have the athleticism to play defense is just giving the coaching a mulligan. There are plenty of much better defensive teams with no more or less athleticism.

It's not that they're not suited for man2man defense, they just don't like physical contact. Hardly ANY OF THEM dive for loose balls, fight for rebounds, get up in the man's grill, willing to get plowed over. They are afraid of getting hurt and ruining their draft status. Cal's created that predicament.

Exactly. Recruiting and marketing the team are his strengths.
Assign the areas he lacks in to his assistants and take that load off his shoulders. Administering the UK bball team is plenty. Delegate!

All of the great football coaches do it. Oversee it but give those assistants authority to make changes. Park the ego and do what’s best for THIS 2024 Wildcat team.

I think our defense on the 9 - 16 team was better than any of last 3 years actually. Well at least for fg% allowed. We just had noone to score. Literally noone

First it’s the offense. Now cal needs someone to run the defense. The problem is cal pure and simple. Great cbb coaches have no problem coaching both sides of the ball. Cal cannot coach either end.

Fishers - is Welch responsible for the offense?

That’s what I don’t get. Cal did that with the offense but nothing on defense/overall game plan. It is head scratching.

Exactly!! He had to bring in an offensive coach and now a defensive one? What are we paying this bufoon $9 million a year to do?
 
I wonder if Payne was responsible for defense. From 2010-2020 we never had a season where we finished higher than the 80th and had if memory serves me correct 3 that were top 10. Then Kenny left at the end of that season and we have had 3 seasons in the 100's and none better than 35th since.

Good call Kybluedude. This is how Billy Donovan won back to back champs at Florida. I can't remember his name, but he was a former head coach and he ran a very good defense. Florida also had an awesome strength coordinator at that time. He always worked the players core balance, etc.

First off he doesn't have the talent at U of L that he coached at UK. Second I am just looking for explanations as to why our defense has tanked recently. I don't buy into the "Cal has forgotten how to coach" crap. Something changed from 2020 forward because his teams at Memphis and UMass weren't this bad defensively either.
 
Geez so now he needs an offensive specialist and a defensive specialist? Wouldn’t it be cheaper to get a head coach that can do these things with the added benefit of winning?

I remember back years ago when coach Robic I think was his name was in charge of Ky D and they had decent D. has not been the same since he left.
 
So he had to hire an OC, now we want a DC.

And he sends players and assistants out to do most of his press conferences, interviews and media engagements.

Does that mean we'd be paying him all that money just to recruit and not do anything else?

Will he have to even show up for the games or could he watch from home?

Not hire a new coach. I’m sure all those assistants have the d knowledge that they can teach some zones and a press to use occasionally to take advantage of our depth. They have been assistants for good HCs. Delegate the defense to them. He has a terrific staff. Martin Chinn Antiqua Welch Flint Ulis. All very good.

That's kind of my point. He doesn't WANT to coach defense. Or he'd have someone do it.
 
Pitino on the halftime interview at the St John’s vs Providence game was asked how they came back. He said we were in a zone and were getting torn up, so we switched to a man-to-man and ended the half on a 23-5 run. You can switch defenses during a game COW. It is not against the rules.

Don’t understand with our depth and athleticism why we don’t run a full court zone press then fall back into a zone. Puts pressure on the opposing guards and leads to mistakes. Not the entire game but mix it up with man, after the 4-minute timeouts. Even if you play poorly, you are speeding up the game which plays into our hands.
 
This reminds me of the summer when people were complaining Mitch wouldn’t let Cal hire an offensive coordinator 😂😂🤣
