Brian Bowen to...Louisville?

Coach Rick Pitino
  1. Good coach=YES
  2. Developing lesser talent=YES
  3. Top level 5-star recruiter (UL)=NO
  4. Developing 4-star/multi-year talent=YES
  5. Developing 5-star talent (at UL since 2002)=NO
    1. Palacios
    2. Telfair
    3. Clark
    4. Caracter
    5. Jennings
    6. Samuels
    7. Behanan
    8. King
      • These EIGHT 5-star players (RIVALS) IMO, are not much of a positive track record for a Hall of Fame coach in helping these kids get to where they want to be (NBA/ $$$/ Degrees)
      • Bowen has to be seriously hard-up for some reason to want to walk into that situation especially with UL having similar (older) position players like Adel and King and also whatever NCAA sanctions that may happen

There is something odd with that kid and I dont understand it. It seems like all the bigger schools are avoiding him.
Great question.......... kid has great ball skills but I have wondered why also bigger programs are staying away. Anyone know ?

When? 1996 UK team was not one & dones.

Ron Mercer is the last elite HS recruit to succeed under Rick
That is the weirdest part of all. Pitino lands so few top notch kids. even when he was here he rarely landed the top players.
He built that 96 team with talent and experienced players.

Yeah stupid decision because Rick Pitino is only the best college bball coach of all time. One of 2 coaches to lead 3 different teams to a final 4 and the only coach to win a National Title at 2 different schools. Had he stayed here Coach K wouldnt be shit.

If you love Rick so much why don't you go over to the Louisville board and join them. Ricky runs one of the dirtiest programs in the nation and has had more players with negative press than any other program in the nation. Oh and our coach has owned Ricky in head to head matchups.

Ha! Bowen must have been enamored by VJ King's 13 minutes per game.

Let him go there. We already have 3 forwards better than him coming in.

Hes won a national championship (same amount as Cal) and been to a few final fours without a roster full of 5 star one and dones too, you do realize that?

So what? You do realize it's more difficult to win a title/get to a final 4 with 18 year old one and dones (no matter their star ranking) who never played college basketball before, right?

...like I already said, players of Bowens caliber have to consider more than "who can I win a championship with." They have to consider who can help them set themselves up for a professional career playing basketball. And, like I already said, it's stupid to look past the fact that pitino has largely failed in that regard simply because he's won a lot.

I'm sure the countless players Pitinos coached who haven't done shit in the league feel better at night by telling themselves "he wasn't paid to help me have a basketball career".

This is flying over your head. Go to sleep
The problem with that is you have to exclude so many coaches if your criteria is NBA. Duke has been horrible at getting players longevity in the NBA. Only recently has there been substantial success, since Kyrie Irving.
Grant Hill may be the most acclaimed.
So if the NBA is the primary criteria, you can choose to come here or go to UNC/Kansas.

Historically:

Currently:

If you look at the current list, outside the top 4, they are mostly known for being decent recruiters but only average college winners.

I hate duke as much as the next guy, but this just isn't very true. I mean players like Dunleavy, Deng, Dahntay Jones, Redick have all been in the league over 10 years now (Battier and Boozer just retired but had very long careers). Then you have other guys like Kyrie, Henderson, McRoberts, Thomas who will all reach the 10 year mark. If you want to argue they have been lacking overall star power in the league, I would agree with that, though.

I do agree with most of your opinion. However....at the end of the day I wouldn't want my son playing there.

Really strange. King complaining to Pitino about hardly playing and Pitino telling him there are better players than him on the roster and that is why they got most of the minutes. Then King taking a chance with Pitino and signing on for another year.

Then Navre?, whom is a Pitino priority, coming in at that same position. King better out play him a ton because he has already peeved Pitino off with his complaining and Pitino already likes Navre? a lot. King doesn't know Pitino like we do, he is more about getting what he can out of him for the coach and not so much worrying about his progress for the NBA.

Now if Bowen comes along, somebody has to go or sit for sure. All of the schools across the country guys like King and Bowen could go to and play to their potential yet they are still blind to Pitino as a person and the way he handles players.

You're arguing pitinos success and accomplishments in a conversation about a 5 star player possibly choosing them. Nobody came on here and said pitino sucked as a coach so take your love affair for him elsewhere. To get back on topic, I think the jokes about "why would a 5 star kid choose Louisville" are because 5 star kids want to be one and done or possibly two year players and play in the NBA. Pitino doesn't exactly have a stellar record at Louisville of producing studs right from their freshman year. Doesn't happen.

So saying "pitino won a national championship with two different teams" is kind of off topic. Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're all aware of his accomplishments. We all know what he's done. But again, a five star player going there is a mistake if you ask me and likely delays any players aspirations to go to the NBA early. Donovan Mitchell would have been a fool not to stay in the draft and pitino acted like he was blindsided and shocked while trying to completely hold mitchell back.

So again, why would a 5 star player choose a school where the coach DOES NOT want them going to the NBA early, and rarely (if ever) has freshman that have amazing seasons propelling them in the lottery?

And "because pitino made a final four and won a title" is not an answer.

That is his job, coaching Louisville, not worrying about a kid getting tot he NBA.
Everyone knows the statistics about how quickly athletes go broke. Better to improve the person than the money making opportunity. And they do not need to be mutually exclusive.

That "being his job" doesn't make it a good individual decision for Bowen.

Something got your goat?

I never said Pitino was good at getting players NBA contracts...thats not what he's paid to do, he's paid to win games at UofL and he's done a great job.
It's almost like you intentionally disregarded the point of the OP/thread and just wanted to laud Pitino for something generally.

You do realize Pitino has been at Louisville 16 years and only won one championship. That is twice as long as Cal has been at UK. Cal has an 8-2 record against Pitino while at Kentucky. He has more final fours and the same number of titles in half the time.

And that's how Cal approaches the situation; he develops players that move on to the NBA to make more money than most of us ever make in a lifetime as well as teaches them to be responsible so they don't go broke.

A professor's job is teaching the subject they cover but what is the point in doing that if the overall goal is not preparing a student for life and a career. Sounds like the Pimp isn't doing such a great job.

You say that Pitino is the greatest coach of all time.... Don't you mean the dumbest ? Let's count the ways.

1. He left UK
2. Thought Sebastian Telfair was better than Rajon Rondo
3. Said if Jared Prickett developed a jump shot, that he would be the next Larry Bird
4. Said that Terrance Williams was going to be the next Dominique Wilkins
5. Said that Juan Palacios was going to be the next Jamal Mashburn
6. He took the UL job, thinking that UK fans, because of him would become UL fans
7. Karen Sypher

And as far as being the best coach. Lets compare him to Calipari.
1. In 16 years at UL he's been to only 3 Final 4's... Calipari in only 8 years at UK, half as long as Pitino has been at UL has already been to 4 Final 4's
2. In head to head match ups Cal has dominated Pitino 8 wins to only 2 wins for Pitino
3. Pitino has coached 24 years at a Top 10 basketball school, Calipari only 8. Give Calipari 16 more years here and Cal's Final 4 numbers will dwarf Pitino's.

I was gonna ask about other offers. And if Kansas was his only other big offer.. going to Louisville to play for Pitino does have some draw. Put aside our hate for UofL and Rick.. it's a very strong basketball program with a coach who is widely regarded as one of the greats. You take them over Depaul, Oregon, Creighton, etc. Might even take them over MSU at this point.

That said, it's still a sinking ship. Why would you get on board with something that could have serious problems very soon? There has to be plenty of other big schools who would gladly take this kid.

He has done terrible job at UL. Besides the couple of years his staff cheated to get players and hired whores, he has one legit final four in 16 years. He has gone to the NIT or not made it out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament 9 out of his 16 years at UL. He has lost 8 out of 10 games to Cal since Cal has been at UK. He has been a total fraud at UL and I hope he stays there another ten years.
Yep, spot on. I thought I would hate Rick being at uavel, but I don't. I like it, I like it a lot.

I'm so happy Cal makes you this angry all the time. I hope Cal brings in another mid yr player next year just to piss you off.

And Pitino sucks come March. He's got I title in the last 20 years. Glad you think so highly of scum like Rick.
